Mom's in the Kitchen - article by Joel Hempel

Walking into my house as a teenager, I asked Dad, “Is mom around?”

“She’s in the kitchen.”

If my mom wasn’t watching As the World Turns, bowling with friends, or preparing the altar for Sunday worship at church, she would be in the kitchen. As an adolescent, knowing I could always find Mom was comforting. She was the easy one to talk to.

Dad was more detached; Mom was God’s grace. Sitting on a stool in the kitchen, I could talk with her about anything: dating girls, what I wanted to be when I grew up, Walther League activities, or my summer job at the machine shop where Dad was the General Foreman.

Talking to Mom back then was like talking with God now. Once I realized I could talk with God the way I talked with Mom, God became closer to me.

Of course, you understand that we can’t do anything to bring God closer to us. He is always with us (Matthew 28:20) and even within us (Galatians 2:20). But when we pray, we are more aware of God and his care.

As I’m sure you recall, Jesus’ disciples once asked him to teach them how to pray. Our Lord then gave them the prayer the entire Christian world prays. The Lord’s Prayer is a model for an intimate conversation with our Father. Each petition is the beginning of a conversation God wants to have with us. For example, “thy kingdom come” seeks to have God rule in our hearts and take control of our lives. It’s a plea for humility and submission. We can pause at this petition and reflect on where we resist giving over control to God.

Prayer with God, like a conversation with Mom, is two-way. Thus, listening is as critical as talking with the Father. How can we hear God? I agree with those who say God speaks most clearly through his Word. But God’s Word is located strategically where we need to hear or see it. God’s response can be found within us, in other Christians, in the arts, in hymns and stories, and even on bumper stickers and necklaces. We can hear God speaking to us through creation. Do you think he doesn’t place his signature on his masterpiece?

But, to hear God, you have to become an introvert. I’m not saying that just because I am one. When praying, we have to stop talking and crying out. We need to be still, and trust God is nearby and will intervene as his wisdom directs. A closing prayer that can set our hearts at rest is: “Help me, Lord, to trust you and your love for me.” And then, settle into his peace.

How do we do that?

We ask for increased faith to receive the peace of God which will guard [keep anxiety out of] our hearts and minds [wrapped] in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Voters' Meetings

The Leadership Council is calling two Voters’ Meetings to take place in the Family Life Center immediately after the services on June 11, 2023, and June 25, 2023. The agenda for the June 11, 2023, meeting will include a first reading of the proposed 2023-2024 Church Budget and the Leadership Council will request voter approval for the Budget at the June 25, 2023, meeting. Please make sure to mark these dates in your calendar so you can attend and ask any questions you may have.

An additional agenda item we will have for the June 11, 2023, meeting is a presentation on an opportunity we have to support our World Mission ministry by supporting Christ Community International’s construction of a Lutheran Secondary School in Kawete, Uganda. Some of you may recall members Rudy and Dorothy Schaser were active with Christ Community International.

Currently, the community has a primary school but after graduation there are various barriers to secondary education including financial burdens, lack of value placed on educating girls, and distances to other secondary schools in the country. The goals in building the secondary school in Kawete include providing a support system and motivation for students to remain in school and study, offering a Lutheran education with an emphasis on prayer, spirituality, and devotion, and alleviating financial hardships for families. The project cost is estimated at $600,000, though an anonymous donor has agreed to match any funds Christ Community International raises toward the construction. We will provide more detail on this opportunity during our Voters’ Meeting but we intend to have a recommendation on supporting the school construction from our bequest funds.

The Day of Pentecost

May 28, 2023

Sunday 9:15am

Divine Service IV

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Faith and Truth and Life Bestowing (LSB 584)

Faith and truth and life bestowing,

Open now the Scriptures, Lord,

Seed to life eternal sowing,

Scattered on the wind abroad.

Let not hearts, Your Word receiving,

Like a barren field be found,

Choked with thorns and unbelieving,

Shallow earth or stony ground.

May the Spirit’s pow’r unceasing

Bring to life the hidden grain,

Daily in our hearts increasing,

Bearing fruit that shall remain.

So in Scripture, song, and story,

Savior, may Your voice be heard.

Till our eyes behold Your glory

Give us ears to hear Your Word.

+ Preparation +

P: In the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

C: O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

P: These all look to you, to give them their food in due season.

C: When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

P: When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

All:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy;

Christ, have mercy;

Lord, have mercy.

Gloria in Excelsis

To God on high be glory

And peace to all the earth;

Goodwill from God in heaven

Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!

We praise and bless You, Father;

Your holy name we sing—

Our thanks for Your great glory,

Lord God, our heav'nly King.

To You, O sole-begotten,

The Father's Son, we pray;

O Lamb of God, our Savior,

You take our sins away.

Have mercy on us, Jesus;

Receive our heartfelt cry,

Where You in pow'r are seated

At God's right hand on high—

For You alone are holy,

You only are the Lord.

Forever and forever,

Be worshiped and adored;

You with the Holy Spirit

Alone are Lord Most High,

In God the Father's glory.

"Amen!" our glad reply.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading1 Samuel 21:1-6

Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David trembling and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

EpistleActs 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

+ Baptism +

Greeting and Prayer

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: Amen.

P: By water and the Spirit we share Christ’s death.

C: And through his resurrection we have new life.

P: O almighty and merciful God, we thank and praise you that you extend your Family through this means of grace and that you have called David and Anna Hinderliter to be your children through the water of Holy Baptism and the power of your Word. We humbly pray that you would keep them always aware of this covenant of love that you have made with them and nurture the seed of faith you are planting in their heart, that they may faithfully grow to lead lives pleasing to you and, finally, with all your saints obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Blessing

P: David and Anna Hinderliter, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead + and upon your heart + as a sign, symbol and seal of God's love for you.

Lessons

P: Our Lord commanded baptism, saying to his disciples in the last chapter of Matthew, "All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)

P: Hear also his invitation, "People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them." (Mark 10:13-16)

Confession of Faith

P: Parents, in obedience to Christ's command and with faith in his promises, you have presented David and Anna here today to receive Holy Baptism and all the gifts that God conveys through it. On their behalf, therefore, I ask you to join with me and the rest of this congregation in the confession of the faith in which we baptize.

P: Do you renounce the devil, all his works and all his ways?

All: I do renounce him.

P: Do you believe in God the Father?

All: Yes, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven

and earth.

P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son?

All: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

P: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

All: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

The Rite of Baptism

P: Who brings these children to be baptized?

Parents: We do, their father and mother.

P: And what have you named them?

Parents: David and Anna Hinderliter

P: David Hinderliter / Anna Hinderliter, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with his grace to life everlasting. David / Anna, peace be with you. Amen.

Presentation of Baptismal Candle

P: Receive these burning lights to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end.

Presentation to the Congregation

David Hinderliter, son of Andrew Hinderliter and Di Wu, born on April 22, 2018. Anna Hinderliter, daughter of Andrew Hinderliter and Di Wu, born on February 22, 2022.

Closing Prayer

P: Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted David and Anna the new birth in Holy Baptism and made them members of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and heirs of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as they have now become Your children, You would keep them in their baptismal grace, that according to Your good pleasure they may faithfully grow to lead godly lives to the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

These things are written that you may believe that

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy GospelJohn 7:37–39

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventh chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Hymn – Rejoice in the Lord Always (AGPS 203)

Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.

Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.

Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice.

Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice.

Children’s Message – Stephanie Chapa

Hymn of the Day – Holy Spirit, Light Divine (LSB 496)

Holy Spirit, light divine,

Shine upon this heart of mine;

Chase the shades of night away,

Turn the darkness into day.

Let me see my Savior’s face,

Let me all His beauties trace;

Show those glorious truths to me

Which are only known to Thee.

Holy Spirit, pow’r divine,

Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;

In Thy mercy pity me,

From sin’s bondage set me free.

Holy Spirit, joy divine,

Cheer this saddened heart of mine;

Yield a sacred, settled peace,

Let it grow and still increase.

Holy Spirit, all divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine;

Cast down ev’ry idol throne,

Reign supreme, and reign alone.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored;

Heav'n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name.

Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord;

Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

    In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ,

And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Your Table I Approach (LSB 628)

Your table I approach;

Dear Savior, hear my prayer.

Let not an unrepentant heart

Prove hurtful to me there.

Lord, I confess my sins

And mourn their wretched bands;

A contrite heart is sure to find

Forgiveness at Your hands.

Your body and Your blood,

Once slain and shed for me,

Are taken at Your table, Lord,

In blest reality.

Search not how this takes place,

This wondrous mystery;

God can accomplish vastly more

Than what we think could be.

O grant, most blessèd Lord,

That earth and hell combined

May not about this sacrament

Raise doubt within my mind.

Oh, may I never fail

To thank You day and night

For Your true body and true blood,

O God, my peace and light.

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

O Lord, now let Your servant

Depart in heav'nly peace,

For I have seen the glory

Of Your redeeming grace:

A light to lead the Gentiles

Unto Your holy hill,

The glory of Your people,

Your chosen Israel.

All glory to the Father,

All glory to the Son,

All glory to the Spirit,

Forever Three in One;

For as in the beginning,

Is now, shall ever be,

God's triune name resounding

Through all eternity.

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benedicamus and Benediction

P: Let us bless the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Thine the Amen, Thine the Praise (LSB 680)

Thine the amen, Thine the praise

Alleluias angels raise

Thine the everlasting head

Thine the breaking of the bread

Thine the glory, Thine the story

Thine the harvest then the cup

Thine the vineyard then the cup is lifted up, lifted up.

Thine the life eternally

Thine the promise let there be

Thine the vision, Thine the tree

All the earth on bended knee

Gone the nailing, gone the railing

Gone the pleading, gone the cry

Gone the sighing, gone the dying, what was loss lifted high.

Thine the truly, Thine the yes

Thine the table, we the guest

Thine the mercy all from Thee

Thine the glory yet to be

Then the ringing and the singing

Then the end of all the war

Thine the living, Thine the loving evermore, evermore.

Thine the kingdom, Thine the prize

Thine the wonder full surprise

Thine the banquet then the praise

Then the justice of Thy ways

Thine the glory, Thine the story

Then the welcome to the least

Then the wonder all increasing at Thy feast, at Thy feast.

Thine the glory in the night

No more dying only light

Thine the river, Thine the tree

Then the Lamb eternally

Then the holy, holy, holy

Celebration jubilee

Thine the splendor, Thine the brightness, only Thee, only Thee.
