Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
August 26, 2021
One of the hard things about being a pastor is visitors. I get so excited to meet someone who comes to our church for the first time. I engage with them when they first come with a smile on my face. Then I hope and pray that they connect with the service and with our people. If they don’t come back, it hurts. I love Glendale Lutheran and I wish everyone could experience it.

Sue Shatzman visited last fall. Then she came back again, and again. I asked Sue if she wanted to meet to share our stories. We met in my office. I told her about my life including our church. She was open enough to share her life. Sue was baptized, raised and confirmed in the Lutheran church. As a young woman she met a man and fell in love and married. He was Jewish so she joined his synagogue. Decades later she felt the call back to her faith roots. She moved to Glendale and wanted to try us but Covid hit. Sue worshipped with us online for months until it was safe.

I felt like I already knew her. She seemed like she fit with Glendale Lutheran.  We met for five weeks to talk about her faith, our beliefs and life. She made the decision to reaffirm her childhood faith in Jesus Christ and join our church. This Sunday, Sue will affirm her baptism and confirmation. I’m overjoyed. This is my hope every time we have a visitor. Make her feel welcome, she is very important to God.

Sometimes It Just Helps to Talk

As you probably know, the deacons’ ministry has been renewed at GLC. Their
names, phone numbers, and email addresses are frequently listed in the
Glimpses. What you may not know or may not have thought about is why it is a
good idea to consider reaching out to one of them.

Sometimes it just helps to talk with someone who is impartial. Yes, you have
family and friends. But do you have one who will listen attentively, carefully, and objectively? Do you have someone you can talk to and know with absolute
certainty that what you say will stay with that person? Do you have someone who will be kind and loving, but not necessarily nice? Yea, you read that right! Deacons will be compassionate, but they will also ask a hard question for your reflection. And if you need a good laugh, they love to laugh. But they also know how to stay with you when you have something painful to work through. No, they are not counselors. But they do have training to aid them in caring for you.
Thank You Letter from Kirk Care!

A huge thank you to the Glendale Lutheran Church for supporting Kirk Care with a tremendous food/personal care drive donation received at the pantry on Monday, August 2. In total we received 1,020 food and personal care items that will assist 41 families in need for a month--AMAZING!!!!! Your very generous food/personal care donation will help 120 family members of which nearly 50 are children age 18 and under. The timing of your food drive was perfect as our pantry supplies were running low over the summer months due to reduced donations. We are currently purchasing items to keep our shelves filled to meet summer demand when kids are home from school. We are so grateful for the ongoing support from Glendale Lutheran Church to help us help those in most need within our community. Thanks again!

Gratefully yours,
Larry Watson, President

News from Oliver & Bethany LaMie

Dear Glendale Lutheran Church,

Peace to you in Christ! Vicarage is going great so far. The congregation has been incredibly welcoming; it's a lot like home really. Bethany got a job as an aide in the day care, which she's been loving because she spends all day with babies. I am scheduled to preach in rotation every 3 weeks, and besides that I am on rotation for chapel, Bible studies, confirmation, various devotions, and religion classes at the school. As of writing this very sentence, I've received news that our senior pastor is out with COVID, and the associate pastor is on vacation, which means I'm essentially acting pastor for about 400 people for the next two weeks. It's about a week earlier than I anticipated going out of the frying pan and into the fire, but I'm glad to say that I've been well-prepared for this. I wouldn't dare think that I could be here without you, and the wonderful influence you all have had on me. I thank you for your continued prayer and support, and believe me, I can't wait to see you again. Until then, may our Lord continue to bless you as you do His work!

Hymn of Invocation – O Word of God Incarnate (LSB 523)

O Word of God incarnate,
O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging,
O Light of our dark sky:
We praise You for the radiance
That from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps,
Shines on from age to age.

The Church from You, dear Master,
Received the gift divine;
And still that light is lifted
O’er all the earth to shine.
It is the chart and compass
That, all life’s voyage through,
Mid mists and rocks and quicksands
Still guides, O Christ, to You.

O make Your Church, dear Savior,
A lamp of burnished gold
To bear before the nations
Your true light as of old!
O teach Your wand’ring pilgrims
By this their path to trace
Till, clouds and darkness ended,
They see You face to face!

Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit
C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution
P:  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C:  But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P:  Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C:  Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P:  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

        and renew a right spirit within me.
C:  Cast me not away from your presence,
        and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
P:  Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
        and uphold me with a willing spirit.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
        and cleanse me from my sin!

This Is the Feast
This is the feast of victory for our God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain,
whose blood set us free to be people of God.
This is the feast of victory for our God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Power, riches, wisdom and strength,
and honor, blessing, and glory are His.
This is the feast of victory for our God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Sing with all the people of God,
and join in the hymn of all creation.
Blessing, honor, glory, and might
be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen.
This is the feast of victory for our God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia.
This is the feast of victory for our God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P:  The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P:  Let us pray. O God, the source of all that is just and good, nourish in us every virtue and bring to completion every good intent that we may grow in grace and bring forth the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

First ReadingProverbs 1:1–7
The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction,
  to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
  in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
  knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
  and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
  the words of the wise and their riddles.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
  fools despise wisdom and instruction.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.
Epistle Ephesians 6:10–20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Sue Shatzman – Confession of Faith

Alleluia and Verse
Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
Alleluia, alleluia.
Holy Gospel Mark 7:14-23
P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.
And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Hymn – Kids of the Kingdom (AGPS 150)

Kids of the kingdom, that’s what we are:
Kids of the kingdom, that’s what we are.
We love Jesus, we love the Lord.
We love Jesus, we love the Lord.

Praise to the Father, praise to the Son,
Praise to the Spirit, the Three in One.
We love Jesus, we love the Lord.
We love Jesus, we love the Lord.

Hymn of the Day – Beautiful Savior (LSB 537)

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,
Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be Thine!

Sermon

Apostles' Creed
C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Preface
P:  The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of pow’r and might:
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
P:  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ
P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini
P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: Amen.

Agnus Dei
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;
Have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;
Have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;
Grant us peace.

Distribution Hymn – Chief of Sinners Though I Be (LSB 611)

Chief of sinners though I be,
Jesus shed His blood for me,
Died that I might live on high,
Lives that I might never die.
As the branch is to the vine,
I am His, and He is mine.

Oh, the height of Jesus’ love,
Higher than the heav’ns above,
Deeper than the depths of sea,
Lasting as eternity!
Love that found me—wondrous thought!
Found me when I sought Him not.

Only Jesus can impart
Balm to heal the wounded heart,
Peace that flows from sin forgiv’n,
Joy that lifts the soul to heav’n,
Faith and hope to walk with God
In the way that Enoch trod.

Chief of sinners though I be,
Christ is all in all to me;
All my wants to Him are known,
All my sorrows are His own.
He sustains the hidden life
Safe with Him from earthly strife.

O my Savior, help afford
By Your Spirit and Your Word!
When my wayward heart would stray,
Keep me in the narrow way;
Grace in time of need supply
While I live and when I die.

Blessing

Thank the Lord
Thank the Lord and sing His praise;
Tell ev’ryone what He has done.
Let all who seek the Lord rejoice
And proudly bear His name.
He recalls His promises
And leads His people forth in joy
With shouts of thanksgiving.
Alleluia, alleluia.

Post-Communion Collect
P:  Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

Benediction
P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Son of God, Eternal Savior (LSB 842)

Son of God, eternal Savior,
Source of life and truth and grace,
Word made flesh, whose birth among us
Hallows all our human race,
You our Head, who, throned in glory,
For Your own will ever plead:
Fill us with Your love and pity,
Heal our wrongs, and help our need.

As You, Lord, have lived for others,
So may we for others live.
Freely have Your gifts been granted;
Freely may Your servants give.
Yours the gold and Yours the silver,
Yours the wealth of land and sea;
We but stewards of Your bounty
Held in solemn trust will be.

Come, O Christ, and reign among us,
King of love and Prince of Peace;
Hush the storm of strife and passion,
Bid its cruel discords cease.
By Your patient years of toiling,
By Your silent hours of pain,
Quench our fevered thirst of pleasure,
Stem our selfish greed of gain.

Son of God, eternal Savior,
Source of life and truth and grace,
Word made flesh, whose birth among us
Hallows all our human race:
By Your praying, by Your willing
That Your people should be one,
Grant, O grant our hope’s fruition:
Here on earth Your will be done.
