Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
September 29, 2021
Glendale Lutheran and Christ Community Lutheran School are partners in ministry. We host and they teach kids the Gospel as well as how to read, social and life skills. Monday through Friday eighty children are nurtured by twenty adults on our grounds. This Sunday we get to celebrate collaborating in the work of God.

Pastor Matthew Hoehner, the executive director of CCLS, will preach. Janet Leet, the principal at Webster, will do the children’s message. Then in Bible class, Pastor Hoehner will share a presentation on CCLS as a whole.

This year’s CCLS theme is Faith, Hope and Love from 1 Corinthians 13:13. You may remember this from our sermon series several weeks ago. Paul describes the love of God and then says, “The greatest of these is love.” Faith and hope are temporary. In the new heaven and earth there is no faith or hope because all of the promises of God are realized. Only love is forever. I hope you know that Glendale Lutheran and CCLS are creating a loving environment in which lives can be transformed for eternity. See you Sunday and stay for the presentation. Sunday school is provided for the kids.

Voters' Meeting

A Voters’ Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 17, 2021, immediately following service to elect Leadership Council and Elders. Additionally, we may ask the congregation to vote one or more bequest fund expenditure requests. We will provide more detail in the coming weeks on Leadership Council and Elder candidates and on our bequest fund expenditure requests but wanted to make sure everyone has the opportunity to mark their calendars so they can plan on attending the Meeting.

Leadership Council Nominations

The Leadership Council is accepting nominations for the Council to consider to replace Council members whose terms are expiring in October. This year there are two members whose terms will be coming to an end. Please let anyone on Leadership Council, the Elders, or Pastor Scott know if there is anyone you would like to nominate who you believe would make a good leader for our Congregation. The Leadership Council will review those nominations at its September meeting and provide recommendations in advance of our October 2021 Voters’ Meeting.

Hymn of Invocation – I Love to Tell the Story (AGPS 128, verses 1-3)

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love
I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true;
It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do. Refrain

Refrain: I love to tell the story; ‘twill be my theme in glory
             To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, ‘tis pleasant to repeat
What seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. Refrain

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.
And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,
‘Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain

Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution
P:  Let us now confess our sin to God, our merciful Father.
C:  Gracious God, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We know well that we are by nature sinful and unclean. Morning, noon, and night we have done things we ought not to have done and have not done that which we are to have been doing as Your faithful servants. We have neglected the salvation You so graciously have provided for us. Indeed, we deserve Your punishment in this life and for eternity. Trusting in Your mercy, we come to You for forgiveness. Our trust is not in ourselves but in the merits of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Grant us remission of all our sins and lead us to renewed lives that reflect Your goodness, mercy, and love.
P:  With confident joy, I announce to you that God is gracious and merciful and hears our supplications. Upon your confession, by the command of our Lord and as His called and ordained servant, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

First ReadingGenesis 2:18–25
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 13:1–13
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMark 10:2–16
P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter.
C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Pharisees came up and in order to test [Jesus] asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed
C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Jesus Loves Me (LSB 588)

Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong. Refrain

Refrain: Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
             Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven’s gates to open wide.
He has washed away my sin,
Lets His little child come in. Refrain

Hymn of the Day – Come, Thou Found of Every Blessing (LSB 686)

Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
While the hope of endless glory
Fills my heart with joy and love,
Teach me ever to adore Thee;
May I still Thy goodness prove.

Here I raise my Ebenezer,
Hither by Thy help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be;
Let that grace now like a fetter
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

Oh, that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in the blood-washed linen,
How I’ll sing Thy wondrous grace!
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry;
Take my ransom’d soul away;
Send Thine angels soon to carry
Me to realms of endless day.

Preface
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Lift up your hearts.
C:  We lift them to the Lord.
P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Lord, our God, for You have called us as Your people and have shown us Your kindness day by day, morning and evening. Confident of Your love and assured of Your mercy, we come before You, asking that we receive Your blessings with heartfelt thanksgiving. Pour out upon us the gift of Your Holy Spirit, and grant that we may receive the body and blood of our Lord as a guarantee of our salvation and a foretaste of the feast to come in Your eternal kingdom. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise, together with the Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever.

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini
P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing (LSB 633)

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing
Praise to our victorious King,
Who has washed us in the tide
Flowing from His piercèd side. Alleluia!

Praise we Him, whose love divine
Gives His sacred blood for wine,
Gives His body for the feast—
Christ the victim, Christ the priest. Alleluia!

Where the paschal blood is poured,
Death’s dread angel sheathes the sword;
Israel’s hosts triumphant go
Through the wave that drowns the foe. Alleluia!

Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,
Paschal victim, paschal bread;
With sincerity and love
Eat we manna from above. Alleluia!

Mighty Victim from the sky,
Hell’s fierce pow’rs beneath You lie;
You have conquered in the fight,
You have brought us life and light. Alleluia!

Now no more can death appall,
Now no more the grave enthrall;
You have opened paradise,
And Your saints in You shall rise. Alleluia!

Easter triumph, Easter joy!
This alone can sin destroy;
From sin’s pow’r, Lord, set us free,
Newborn souls in You to be. Alleluia!

Father, who the crown shall give,
Savior, by whose death we live,
Spirit, guide through all our days:
Three in One, Your name we praise. Alleluia!

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect
P:  Let us pray. Grant, O Lord, that what we have received with our lips we keep with pure hearts, and that through the gift imparted to us in this present life we may hereafter receive life everlasting; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
C:  Amen.

Benediction
P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – I Love to Tell the Story (AGPS 128, verses 4-6)

I love to tell the story, of how, from heav’n above
Our Lord and Savior Jesus was sent to show God’s love
To ev’ry sinful creature upon this earthly place
How Christ, the gift from heaven is God’s great gift of grace. Refrain

Refrain: I love to tell the story; ‘twill be my theme in glory
             To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story of our dear Savior’s birth.
Of how the angel chorus announced with joyful mirth
That little baby, Jesus, was Christ the earth’s true Lord.
Of how the lowly shepherds on bended knees adored. Refrain

I love to tell the story of how He was baptized.
How God’s great voice from heaven spoke loudly from the skies.
How God the Holy Spirit descended as a dove.
How Jesus heard His Father proclaim to all His love. Refrain

Postlude – Rejoice!
