Does God Laugh? - article by Joel Hempel

It’s difficult for me to imagine a Spirit laughing. But then, I have never lived in that realm. On the other hand, we laugh, and we are made in God’s image.

When a friend recently asked this question in a devotion, here was my reply:

I don’t know if God laughs or even how much Jesus laughed. But I have no doubt our Lord smiled a lot. Think about the times following his resurrection when in the garden outside the empty tomb, he said, “Mary.” Or, what about when he appeared in the upper room behind locked doors or breaking bread with the Emmaus disciples? Then there was the time when he told Peter and the others to throw their fishing net over the other side of the boat. I think he had fun, kindhearted fun with people. I can’t imagine he was a sourpuss on such occasions.

We also know he knew how to enjoy life, maybe even have a goblet of wine (John 2:1-12) and relax with his friends (John 12:1-3). If we can imagine Jesus smiling or even laughing, then surely God has a sense of humor. Although I doubt the Father tells dad jokes.

Why does the question about laughter in heaven matter? No one has to tell us – and God surely knows – that life is demanding and often intense. There is pressure on everyone. It is important to the Creator who created natural beauty, newborn babies, and koala bears that we all take the opportunity to lighten up, relax our brains, remove our shoes, and enjoy clean fun and healthy laughter.

Whenever I visit Rosemary and Ken Orloff, I am struck by how they maintain a positive attitude while dealing with one setback after another. Of course, their faith plays a big part in rising above their circumstances. But their God-gifted sense of humor and ability to laugh makes a significant contribution to their well-being. If you question this conclusion, check out this article from the Mayo Clinic, Stress Relief from Laughter? It’s No Joke.

Laughter can strengthen our immune system, boost a bad mood, diminish pain, and help protect us from the damaging effects of stress.

Does God Laugh? I don’t know. But he seems to know how to have fun with us. Picture Jesus with the children. Look at his face as he watches the bride’s family discover they have six barrels of luxury quality wine. Watch him turn two fish and a small loaf of bread into a banquet for thousands. Is Jesus enjoying himself? You think he wants us to join him?

Amid our vocational demands and many challenges, God wants us to make room to enjoy life and a good laugh.

Birthday Bag Time

BIRTHDAY BAGS are now being gathered for the 8th year to help lighten the the birthdays of children who have much less than many of us do.

The Time line is from February 1-28. The fliers are on the table at the entrance to church. If you have any questions, feel free to call me. Many others have participated and would answer questions for you. Gathering the items to fill the bags can be difficult for some people who would be willing to either contribute parts of the gift bags or would be willing to contribute some money to help purchase the gifts. You can give any money by handing it to me at church or place it in an envelope in my mailbox.

Shortly after February 28, helpers from our church will load up their cars and deliver the Birthday Bags to Operation Food Search for distribution.

Thank you on behalf of the children who are surprised how other people cared for them.

Sunday 9:15am

Divine Service III

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones (LSB 670, verses 1, 4)

Ye watchers and ye holy ones,

Bright seraphs, cherubim, and thrones,

Raise the glad strain: “Alleluia!”

Cry out, dominions, princedoms, pow’rs,

Virtues, archangels, angels’ choirs:

“Alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!”

O friends, in gladness let us sing,

Supernal anthems echoing:

“Alleluia, alleluia!”

To God the Father, God the Son,

And God the Spirit, Three in One:

“Alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!”

+ Preparation +

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

P:  Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P:  Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C:  who made heaven and earth.

P:  I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C:  and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P:  O almighty God, merciful Father,

C:  I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P:  Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P:  Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!

C:  The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

P:  The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.

C:  Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!

P:  The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

C:  Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory be to God on High,

and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee.

we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.

O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;

O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.

Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,

art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P:  Let us pray. O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingExodus 24:8–18

And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.

The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.”

Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle 2 Peter 1:16–21

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Holy GospelMatthew 17:1-9

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the seventeenth chapter.

C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light (LSB 411, verse 1)

I want to walk as a child of the light.

I want to follow Jesus.

God set the stars to give light to the world.

The star of my life is Jesus.  Refrain

Refrain:  In Him there is no darkness at all.

The night and the day are both alike.

The Lamb is the light of the city of God.

Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

Children’s Message – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – ‘Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here (LSB 414, verses 1-2)

’Tis good, Lord, to be here!

Thy glory fills the night;

Thy face and garments, like the sun,

Shine with unborrowed light.

’Tis good, Lord, to be here,

Thy beauty to behold

Where Moses and Elijah stand,

Thy messengers of old.

Sermon

Offertory

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from Thy presence,

And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation,

And uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen.

P:  The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up unto the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

C: It is meet and right so to do.

P:  It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples that they might be strengthened to proclaim His cross and resurrection and with all the faithful look forward to the glory of life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He, blessed is He,

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Beautiful Savior (LSB 537)

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,

Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,

Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,

He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,

Bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer

Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, praise, adoration

Now and forevermore be Thine!

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant

depart in peace according to Thy word,

for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,

which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people,

a light to lighten the Gentiles

and the glory of Thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen.

Hymn of the Day – ‘Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here (LSB 414, verses 3-5)

Fulfiller of the past

And hope of things to be,

We hail Thy body glorified

And our redemption see.

Before we taste of death,

We see Thy kingdom come;

We long to hold the vision bright

And make this hill our home.

’Tis good, Lord, to be here!

Yet we may not remain;

But since Thou bidst us leave the mount,

Come with us to the plain.
