I encourage everyone to take the vision survey either by paper copy in the back of the sanctuary or by following this link:

When people ask me how it’s going at Glendale Lutheran Church I always say, “I love my church.” I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I usually add, “And my church loves me.” What do I love about Glendale Lutheran Church? The intimacy. There is a closeness to this congregation. People know each other. We’ve communed next to one another since we only have one service on Sunday morning. We’ve been over to each other’s houses through Table of 8. We’ve served beside one another in servant events and on boards. When a person is absent at worship, it’s felt. The person or family is missed. When someone is suffering like the Frimels with Kim’s cancer or Michelle with her double mastectomy, all of our people are concerned and sharing the pain.

Not every congregation is intimate. Some small congregations are distant. Large congregations are difficult to feel connected to everyone. We are blessed to be here. I am blessed to be your pastor. Thanks for following Jesus at Glendale Lutheran Church. You are a gift to us.

Vision Survey

Please, complete a survey either by writing on the one provided in the sanctuary or by clicking the link above. This survey captures your opinions of where we are and where we would like to be in the service of our Lord. The Survey will pose seven questions and should take no more than 15 minutes.

We are targeting October 2 to receive all of the surveys. Our ultimate goal is to have 100+ members respond so that we have a strong base of information. All responses will be kept confidential and will only be seen by the Lutheran Church Extension Fund which is our overall coordinator. Sunday October 23rd, we will share the anonymous responses through a vision event and lunch after worship.

Thank you for your assistance, GLC Vision Committee

Thy will be done! - article by Joel Hempel

Every Sunday, we pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Of course, in heaven, God's will is perfectly obeyed. Not so much here on earth! And yet, it remains God's will that we follow what is revealed in his Word. But what if God's Word does not directly address our concern?

In their first meeting with the GLC Vision Team, Lutheran Church Extension Fund vision leaders, pastors Mark Frith and Dan Gilbert, used Psalm 25:4-5 as the basis for their opening devotion: Make me to know your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me.

We already know a great deal about God's will for us. For example, God our Savior “. . . desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4). We also know, for example, that Jesus directs us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind . . . and you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt.

22:37-39). These and all other commandments are God’s revealed will.

But what if what we want to know is not revealed? For example, Scripture is silent when it comes to the vision for our church. Although the Bible does not offer a clear path for GLC, we are not directionless. There are general principles like the above commandment from our Lord and his directive to “make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19-20).

In addition to the above general principles, there are specific guidelines for discovering God’s will for our church. First and foremost, prayer is essential. “Make me to know your ways, O LORD,” the Psalmist models for us. Secondly, if we seek God's will, our will has to be in submission to what God wants for us. This can be painful. Jesus demonstrated this second principle for us when in Gethsemane, he prayed asking the Father to take the cup of suffering

from him, "yet not my will, but yours be done"

The third principle that comes to mind is less clear but extremely important. It is a principle based on trusting the process of discernment. Different approaches are used to seek Gods will. Pastors Frith and Gilbert are bringing one to us that includes fervent prayer, gathering wisdom from the community of believers, studying the findings, and other steps that will become clear as

we proceed toward a revealed vision.

Special thanks to Pastor Scott and Lutheran Church Extension Fund who made it possible to enter this vision process. This is an exciting time for our congregation. Let us prepare to receive a vision that will lead us into the future.

Operation Christmas Child... by Carol Froesel

Its time again to fill those shoe boxes that Samaritan Purse sends around the world to spread the Gospel and light up the eyes and hearts of underprivileged children.

I have to apologize that our actual boxes have not yet arrived, but you can begin to gather goodies to pack in them. There are lists of suggestions available on the "Christmas Child" table in the Fellowship room.

Last year our boxes travelled to Rawanda, Africa. Isn't it always exciting to see how far a little love can reach!

Any questions call: Carol Froesel 314-822-1365

Blessings on all our efforts.

Finance Update

Food Drive

The GLC FOOD DRIVE is happening again this year from September 15 - October 15. For our neighbors who have struggled to keep up with essential items for their families or individuals who have limited funds, it has only gotten harder to manage their household with the rising costs of basic needs. .There will be a table in the entry where you can place your contributions. We will have lists from Kirk Care that can help you decide what to purchase. Please Remember NO GLASS is allowed.

If you want to contribute but cannot manage the shopping, you can contribute by giving Cathie Albers or Marcia Hempel cash, we would be grateful to shop for your items. Another choice is to place an envelope in one of our mailboxes.

Thank you for anything you can give.

C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution –

P     Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C     Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Absolution

P     Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

First Reading – Amos 6:17

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,

and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria,

the notable men of the first of the nations,

to whom the house of Israel comes!

Pass over to Calneh, and see,

and from there go to Hamath the great;

then go down to Gath of the Philistines.

Are you better than these kingdoms?

Or is their territory greater than your territory,

O you who put far away the day of disaster

and bring near the seat of violence?

Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory

and stretch themselves out on their couches,

and eat lambs from the flock

and calves from the midst of the stall,

who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp

and like David invent for themselves instruments of music,

who drink wine in bowls

and anoint themselves with the finest oils,

but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,

and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – James

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned; you have murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

BAPTISM

Holy Gospel – Luke 16: 19-31

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixteenth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Luke 16:19–31

[Jesus said:] “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

[Jesus said:] “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Brothers and Sisters in Christ (AGPS 78)

Children’s Sermon – Janet Leet

Hymn of the Day Dear Christians One and All Rejoice (LSB 556)

Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice,

   With exultation springing,

And with united heart and voice

   And holy rapture singing,

Proclaim the wonders God has done,

How His right arm the vict’ry won.

What price our ransom cost Him!

Fast bound in Satan’s chains I lay;

   Death brooded darkly o’er me.

Sin was my torment night and day;

In sin my mother bore me.

But daily deeper still I fell;

My life became a living hell,

   So firmly sin possessed me.

But God had seen my wretched state

   Before the world’s foundation,

And mindful of His mercies great,

   He planned for my salvation.

He turned to me a father’s heart;

He did not choose the easy part

   But gave His dearest treasure.

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise Him.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P     Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C     Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P     Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P     As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C     Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P     O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

Distribution Hymn – Jesus, Greatest at the Table (446 LSB)

Jesus greatest at the table,

Thee almighty Son of Man

Laid aside his outer clothing

Poured some water in a pan

As the twelve lay hushed in silence

He the servants task began.

Marvel how their Lord and teacher

Gently taught them not to vie

As He humbly knelt before them

Dusty feet to wash and dry

By His tender touch expressing

True compassion from on high

Jesus took the role of servant

When upon that gruesome span

For all human sin He suffered

As a vile and loathsome man

On the cross poured out like water

To fulfill the Fathers plan

Can we fathom such deep mercy?

Do we see what God has done?

Who can grasp this great reversal

Love that gives His only Son?

Christ the sinless for the sinners

For the many dies the One.

Jesus gave to his disciples

A commandment that was new

Show my love to one another

Do as I have done to you

All the world will know you love Me

As you love each other too.

Blessing
