Up, Down, Up, Down, Up - article by Joel Hempel

This past summer, Marcia and I went to Branson and Silver Dollar City for a few days. Silver Dollar City, as some of you know, is a cross between an amusement park and an entertainment venue. A popular roller coaster ride at the park is Fire In the Hole. I would not go on it, but Marcia did. She likes the wild, up-and-down ride. Not me!

St. Paul gives us a different kind of up-and-down ride – but not for our amusement. Look at the sequence of the following passages from three back-to-back-to-back chapters in Romans 6:4, 7:19, 24, and 8:1. Note the italicized and enlarged words (my emphasis).

UP: We were buried therefore with [Christ] by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

DOWN: I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Wretched man that I am!

UP: Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

DOWN: So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

UP: There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

These verses – which St. Paul generously shares from his own experience -  are a gift to every Christian because they reveal the vulnerable, up-and-down struggle all Christians experience in our spiritual roller-coaster journey through life.

For a while, we feel good about our walk with God; then, we take a nosedive, succumbing to temptation. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit reminds us we are God’s beloved child, and we take hold of God’s grace and repent. In time, we again entertain destructive thoughts that lead to an unwise decision, unkind words, or selfish behavior. But in time, we see the error of our ways and by God’s grace turn away from our foolishness . . .

Although there is no getting off the spiritual roller-coaster, as we grow by the power of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual ups and downs become less severe as we intentionally depend on and use the resources God provides for the journey (see 1 Cor. 10:13; James 4:7; Gal. 5:16-17, 22; Eph. 6:13; Phil. 4:6-8, 12-13; James 5:13-16).

As we grow in faith and faithfulness to Jesus, we may still get discouraged or even frightened that we keep messing up and sinking into sin, but God has given us a blood-bought promise: You are mine! I will not let go! I will do for you as I did with Peter sinking into the Sea of Galilee. I will help you UP!

Believe it; it’s true: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Voters' Meeting

The Leadership Council has scheduled a Voters’ Meeting for Sunday, October 27, 2024, immediately following service. Our primary agenda item will be to elect Leadership Council Members and Elders. We will provide a slate of candidates once nominees are finalized. Additionally, we will be providing our quarterly update regarding the congregation’s finances. We look forward to seeing everyone!

Lutheran World Relief - Hurricane Aid Donations

Lutheran World Relief is rushing bottled water and other urgently requested items to our partners in North Carolina and Florida. We are also sending a minimum of 10 truckloads of LWR Quilts & Kits to affected communities in North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. More will be mobilized as needed.

Thanks to your support, we are providing cash grants to many of the same local organizations who will be distributing Quilts and Kits. The grants will be used to amplify their efforts, including providing food, water, essential supplies and temporary housing. Most of these organizations are smaller but deeply embedded in local communities, so your gifts are expanding critical front-line responses that really need extra support.

Finance Update

Hymn of Invocation – In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save.

‘Til on that cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied.

For ev’ry sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world, by darkness slain;

Then bursting forth in glorious day,

Up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory,

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;

For I am His and He is mine,

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No fear in life, no fear in death,

This is the pow’r of Christ in me;

From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny.

No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand;

‘Til He returns or calls me home,

Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand!

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession and AbsolutionPsalm 112:1; Philippians 1:6

P: Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

C: who greatly delights in His commandments!

P: Blessed be the God who meets our sin with mercy and our humble confession with forgiveness and the pledge of eternal life.

Silence for meditation and reflection

P: Holy and merciful Lord,

C: Your people come to You, humble of heart and repenting of their sins. We confess, Father, that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed; by the evil we have done and by the good we have not done. Some of our sin we know and some we do not know. Forgive us all our sins for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and renew us by Your Holy Spirit, that we may be restored to Your service and live to the praise of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and given to us His only Son to suffer and die for our salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. Thanks be to God.

P: May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace be with you.

C: And also with you.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, whose grace always precedes and follows us, help us to forsake all trust in earthly gain and to find in You our heavenly treasure; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingAmos 5:6–7, 10–15

Seek the LORD and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel, O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth! They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth. Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins—you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate. Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time. Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 10:1–14

Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Mark 10:17-22

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

As [Jesus] was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Jesus, Name Above All Names (AGPS 145)

Jesus, name above all names,

Beautiful Savior, glorious Lord,

Emmanuel, God is with us

Blessed Redeemer, living Word.

Jesus, loving shepherd

Vine of the branches, Son of God

Prince of Peace, Wonderful counselor

Lord of the universe, Light of the world.

Children’s Message – Ryan Philpot

Hymn of the Day – All Who Believe and Are Baptized (LSB 601)

All who believe and are baptized

Shall see the Lord’s salvation;

Baptized into the death of Christ,

They are a new creation.

Through Christ’s redemption they shall stand

Among the glorious, heav’nly band

Of ev’ry tribe and nation.

With one accord, O God, we pray:

Grant us Your Holy Spirit.

Help us in our infirmity

Through Jesus’ blood and merit.

Grant us to grow in grace each day

That by this sacrament we may

Eternal life inherit.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: Glory to You, O Lord, glory and power and majesty and might, for in Your goodness You created us for Yourself and by Your steadfast love and mercy You have kept us in this holy faith and fear, that with the saints who have gone before us with the sign of faith and with the angels and archangels we may join in the endless song of praise, glorifying You as God forever:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Holy Father, mighty Lord, all things are Yours and without You nothing was made. We give You thanks and praise that You have not abandoned Your children to death but sent forth Your Son, born of the virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we might be rescued from sin and its death now and forevermore. Knowing of Your goodness and mercy, we pray You to grant us Your Holy Spirit that we who commune this day may receive for our good the gift given to us in this blessed communion upon the body and blood of Christ.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Lord Jesus, Think on Me (LSB 610)

Lord Jesus, think on me

And purge away my sin;

From worldly passions set me free

And make me pure within.

Lord Jesus, think on me,

By anxious thoughts oppressed;

Let me Your loving servant be

And taste Your promised rest.

Lord Jesus, think on me

Amid the battle’s strife;

In all my pain and misery,

O be my health and life!

Lord Jesus, think on me

Nor let me go astray;

Through darkness and perplexity

Point out Your chosen way.

Lord Jesus, think on me

That, when this life is past,

I may the_eternal brightness see

And share Your joy at last.
