Behold the Beauty of God's Creation - article by Joel Hempel

Michael and Kelsey’s wedding was so stunning I found myself in tears taking in the miracle unfolding before us: God was creating something remarkably beautiful. Two children of God were being united with Christ for a future together with the promise of being, as Pastor Scott preached, a living witness as a “little church.”

But, whoever coined the phrase, “beauty is only skin deep,” was wrong. Yes, Michael and Kelsey are a good-looking couple. Yes, the church was decorated beautifully. But beauty is so much more than what meets the eye.

On Sunday following the Saturday wedding, we sang the hymn, Beautiful Savior. What is beautiful about our Savior is not his face. For we know from Isaiah that the Messiah – Jesus – would have “no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2). Jesus was not the handsome hunk depicted in the series Chosen. What was and is beautiful about Jesus is the depth of his love for us. It doesn’t matter how big or small you are, how rich or poor you may be, or whether you are a specimen of health or struggling to make it. Jesus is in love with you and has given his all for you.

Our culture wants to fool us about beauty. Arriving in my email inbox today is an ad from Macy’s. They want me to “be in the know on all things beauty.” They are offering “over 100 beauty services and experiences.” They are even inviting me to complete a questionnaire to determine my “biggest haircare battle?” Hmm!

The real challenge to looking and feeling beautiful is not what one sees in the mirror or buying what Macy is selling about “all things beauty.” It’s what you know is true about who God sees when he looks at you.

Do you want to know how good you look? Turn away from the mirror and turn toward the ONE who looks at you as a loving parent looks at her child. Look with the eyes of your Creator, the heart of your Redeemer, and the Love of the Spirit: You are loved and cherished, forgiven, and equipped for life.

Don’t believe me? Will you believe God’s Word?

You formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:13-14

I [God] have redeemed you and called you by name. You are mine. Isaiah 43:1

Those who look to [God] are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. Psalm 34:5

If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Cor. 5:17

You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you. Song of Solomon 4:7

Now, look in the mirror and see the beauty of God’s re-creation!

Hymn of Invocation – Crown Him with Many Crowns (LSB 525)

Crown Him with many crowns,

The Lamb upon His throne;

Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns

All music but its own.

Awake, my soul, and sing

Of Him who died for thee,

And hail Him as thy matchless king

Through all eternity.

Crown Him the virgin’s Son,

The God incarnate born,

Whose arm those crimson trophies won

Which now His brow adorn:

Fruit of the mystic rose,

Yet of that rose the stem,

The root whence mercy ever flows,

The babe of Bethlehem.

Crown Him the Lord of love.

Behold His hands and side,

Rich wounds, yet visible above,

In beauty glorified.

No angels in the sky

Can fully bear that sight,

But downward bend their wond’ring eyes

At mysteries so bright.

Crown Him the Lord of life,

Who triumphed o’er the grave

And rose victorious in the strife

For those He came to save.

His glories now we sing,

Who died and rose on high,

Who died eternal life to bring

And lives that death may die.

Crown Him the Lord of heav’n,

Enthroned in worlds above,

Crown Him the king to whom is giv’n

The wondrous name of Love.

Crown Him with many crowns

As thrones before Him fall;

Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns,

For He is king of all.

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit

C: Amen.

Opening Sentences 2 Samuel 22:47; Psalm 18:3, 6, 46

P: The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock,

C: and exalted be the God of my salvation.

P: I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,

C: and I am saved from my enemies.

P: In my distress I called upon the LORD;

C: to my God I cried for help.

P: From His temple He heard my voice,

C: and my cry to Him reached His ears.

P: The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock,

C: and exalted be the God of my salvation.

Confession and Absolution

P: Let us consider our unworthiness to come before almighty God and confess our sins to Him in the presence of one another.

We confess, Creator Lord, that like Job, we become angry at times with what You have allowed in our lives and we have wondered why.

C: Forgive our pride and turn us to humbly rely on Your gracious plans for us.

P: We confess, Savior Lord, that unlike Paul, we have neglected people around us who have not accepted Your sacrifice for them.

C: Forgive our self-centeredness and inaction, and move us to tell them the Good News as You provide opportunity.

P: We confess, Spirit of truth, that like Peter, we have failed to trust You in all things and have been overwhelmed by the storms of life.

C: Forgive our weakness of faith and enable us to follow where You lead the way.

P: All things in heaven and earth are under God’s rule. His almighty power was shown chiefly in sending His Son into this fallen world to destroy the powers of sin, death, and the devil. Your pride, self-centeredness, weakness of faith, and anything else that would separate you from His great love have been forgiven for Jesus’ sake. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P: I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

C: I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

P: Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.

C: This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

P: The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

C: Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessèd is the man who takes refuge in him!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Almighty and most merciful God,

C: preserve us from all harm and danger

P: that we, being ready in both body and soul,

C: may cheerfully accomplish what You want done;

P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingJob 38:4–18

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?

“Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? It is changed like clay under the seal, and its features stand out like a garment. From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken.

“Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Timothy 5:1-16

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father. Treat younger men like brothers, older women like mothers, younger women like sisters, in all purity.

Honor widows who are truly widows. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband, and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has shown hospitality, has washed the feet of the saints, has cared for the afflicted, and has devoted herself to every good work. But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith. Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander. For some have already strayed after Satan. If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are really widows.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMatthew 14:22-33

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourteenth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Hymn – He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands (AGPS 117)

He’s got the whole world in His hands,

He’s got the whole wide world in His hands,

He’s got the whole world in His hands,

He’s got the whole world in His hands.

He’s got the wind and the rain in His hands,

He’s got the wind and the rain in His hands,

He’s got the wind and the rain in His hands,

He’s got the whole world in His hands.

Children’s Message – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – For All the Saints (LSB 677, verses 1-4)

For all the saints who from their labors rest,

Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,

Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;

Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;

Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, may Thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,

Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old

And win with them the victor’s crown of gold!

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine!

We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;

Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Sermon

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on Your creation. You sent Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, into this world to redeem us fallen creatures. As we receive His body and blood in this sacred Meal, strengthen our faith until You turn it to sight. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (LSB 575)

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

No merit of my own I claim

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.  Refrain

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In ev’ry high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil.  Refrain

His oath, His covenant and blood

Support me in the raging flood;

When ev’ry earthly prop gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.  Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found,

Clothed in His righteousness alone,

Redeemed to stand before His throne!  Refrain

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – For All the Saints (LSB 677, verses 5-8)

And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long,

Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,

And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west;

Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest;

Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day:

The saints triumphant rise in bright array;

The King of Glory passes on His way.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,

Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:

Alleluia! Alleluia!
