Now - article by Joel Hempel

Now means now! Now and every future now means now. What now am I talking about? This one:

There is therefore NOW no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).

Are you “in Christ Jesus?” You absolutely are if you know and trust you have been covered in Christ’s sacrificial love from the cross. And since you are in Christ, God does not see your sinfulness when he looks at you. He sees Jesus because you are “in” him.

It’s a miracle and mystery that God has brought us into Himself. Such intimacy with Christ Jesus is mind-boggling. But Scripture repeatedly states we are in Christ (Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21; Ephesians 2:20-22).

Understandably, when we sin and know we have done wrong in full view of God, who sees everything, we rightly feel guilty and ashamed. But there is an enormous difference between God seeing our behavior about which we need to repent and God seeing someone indifferent and disconnected from His Son.

In Christ, however, by God’s grace, we have turned away from indifference and have been brought into God’s Family of the Forgiven!

Think about the implications of you – and all Jesus-followers – NOW and FOREVER having been accepted as his beloved child.

  • When Satan or whoever wants to condemn you because of some terrible behavior or past sin for which you have already repented and received forgiveness, smile and show them Romans 8:1.

  • When your memories of God-offensive behavior grab you in the night and declare you guilty, call it aloud for what it is – a lie! You now live under the saving umbrella of Romans 8:1.

  • When Satan tempts you to play your “saved card” and tries to convince you that you are free to do whatever your foolish flesh wants to do, tell him in the name of Jesus to get out of your head – that he’s right, you are not condemned, but you are also not stupid.

  • Daily, God wants us to remember we are free:

  • free from being afraid of what follows death – because our life with Christ in heaven is secure

  • free from boredom – because God has a special calling for each of us

  • free from the obligation to live the life Jesus calls us to – because now obeying and serving Jesus is our privilege

That was the good stuff of living in the NOW. Here’s the exciting stuff:

  • With our identity as people in Christ, we can risk being bold for our Lord, trusting his promise of an amazing and adventuresome life. Really! Look it up (John 14:12).

  • An entire congregation can be in Christ (see Galatians 1:22). God wants us to envision what we could become – in Christ! Imagine what John 14:12-14 would look like if it were implemented in our church.

Christmas in August? Why Not?

Stores and online sites are beginning to advertise their back-to-school specials so it's an opportune time to start thinking about your Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. Hymn of Invocation – Lift High the Name of Jesus

Lift high the name of Jesus,

Of Jesus our King.

Make known the power of His grace,

The beauty of His peace.

Remember how His mercy reached

And we cried out to Him.

He lifted us to solid ground,

To freedom from our sin.

Oh sing my soul, and tell all He's done,

Till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

Lift high the name of Jesus,

Of Jesus our Lord.

His power in us is greater than,

Is greater than this world.

To share the reason for our hope,

To serve with love and grace,

That all who see Him shine through us

Might bring the Father praise.

Oh sing my soul, and tell all He's done

Till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

Lift high the name of Jesus,

Of Jesus our Light.

No other name on earth can save,

Can raise a soul to life.

He opens up our eyes to see

The harvest He has grown.

We labor in His fields of grace

As He leads sinners home.

Oh sing my soul, and tell all He's done

Till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

+ Preparation +

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Introit

P: O Lord, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.

C: Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.

P: Prove me, O Lord, and try me; test my heart and my mind.

C: I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O Lord, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud and telling all your wondrous deeds.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: O Lord, I love the habitation of your house and the place where your glory dwells.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy;

Christ, have mercy;

Lord, have mercy.

Gloria in Excelsis

To God on high be glory

And peace to all the earth;

Goodwill from God in heaven

Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!

We praise and bless You, Father;

Your holy name we sing—

Our thanks for Your great glory,

Lord God, our heav'nly King.

To You, O sole-begotten,

The Father's Son, we pray;

O Lamb of God, our Savior,

You take our sins away.

Have mercy on us, Jesus;

Receive our heartfelt cry,

Where You in pow'r are seated

At God's right hand on high—

For You alone are holy,

You only are the Lord.

Forever and forever,

Be worshiped and adored;

You with the Holy Spirit

Alone are Lord Most High,

In God the Father's glory.

"Amen!" our glad reply.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, defend Your Church from all false teaching and error that Your faithful people may confess You to be the only true God and rejoice in Your good gifts of life and salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingIsaiah 29:11-19

And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” And when they give the book to one who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot read.”

And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”

Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?” You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?

Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest? In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 2:12-24

For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

These things are written

that you may believe

that Jesus is the Christ,

the Son of God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy GospelMark 7:1-13

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

 When the Pharisees gathered to [Jesus], with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,

“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban’ (that is, given to God)—then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Pass It On (AGPS 196)

It only takes a spark

To get a fire going,

And soon all those around

Can warm up in its glowing.

That’s how it is with God’s love

Once you’ve experienced it;

You spread His love to ev’ryone;

You want to pass it on.

I wish for you, my friend,

This happiness that I’ve found,

You can depend on Him,

It matters not where you’re bound.

I’ll shout it from the mountaintop

I want my world to know;

The Lord of love has come to me,

I want to pass it on.

Children’s Message – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – My Faith Looks Up to Thee (LSB 702)

My faith looks up to Thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine.

Now hear me while I pray;

Take all my guilt away;

O let me from this day be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart

Strength to my fainting heart;

My zeal inspire!

As Thou hast died for me,

Oh, may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread

And griefs around me spread,

Be Thou my guide;

Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me ever stray from Thee aside.

When ends life’s transient dream,

When death’s cold, sullen stream

Shall o’er me roll,

Blest Savior, then, in love,

Fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above, a ransomed soul!

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord

God of Sabaoth adored;

Heav'n and earth with full acclaim

shout the glory of Your name.

Sing hosanna in the highest,

sing hosanna to the Lord;

Truly blest is He who comes

in the name of the Lord!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God

Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

Haver mercy on us, Jesus Christ,

And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

Distribution Hymn – Thy Body, Given for Me, O Savior (LSB 619)

Thy body, giv’n for me, O Savior,

Thy blood which Thou for me didst shed,

These are my life and strength forever,

By them my hungry soul is fed.  Refrain

Refrain: Lord, may Thy body and Thy blood

Be for my soul the highest good!

With Thee, Lord, I am now united;

I live in Thee and Thou in me.

No sorrow fills my soul, delighted

It finds its only joy in Thee.  Refrain

Who can condemn me now? For surely

The Lord is nigh, who justifies.

No hell I fear, and thus securely

With Jesus I to heaven rise.  Refrain

Though death may threaten with disaster,

It cannot rob me of my cheer;

For He who is of death the master

With aid and comfort e’er is near.  Refrain

My heart has now become Thy dwelling,

O blessèd, holy Trinity.

With angels I, Thy praises telling,

Shall live in joy eternally.  Refrain

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

O Lord, now let Your servant

Depart in heav'nly peace,

For I have seen the glory

Of Your redeeming grace:

A light to lead the Gentiles

Unto Your holy hill,

The glory of Your people,

Your chosen Israel.

All glory to the Father,

All glory to the Son,

All glory to the Spirit,

Forever Three-in-One;

For as in the beginning,

Is now, shall ever be,

God's triune name resounding

Through all eternity.

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benedicamus and Benediction

P: Let us bless the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – The Church’s One Foundation (LSB 644)

The Church’s one foundation

Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;

She is His new creation

By water and the Word.

From heav’n He came and sought her

To be His holy bride;

With His own blood He bought her,

And for her life He died.

Elect from ev’ry nation,

Yet one o’er all the earth;

Her charter of salvation:

One Lord, one faith, one birth.

One holy name she blesses,

Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses

With ev’ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder

The world sees her oppressed,

By schisms rent asunder,

By heresies distressed,

Yet saints their watch are keeping;

Their cry goes up, “How long?”

And soon the night of weeping

Shall be the morn of song.

Through toil and tribulation

And tumult of her war

She waits the consummation

Of peace forevermore

Till with the vision glorious

Her longing eyes are blest,

And the great Church victorious

Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth has union

With God, the Three in One,

And mystic sweet communion

With those whose rest is won.

O blessèd heav’nly chorus!

Lord, save us by Your grace

That we, like saints before us,

May see You face to face.
