Pastor Scott's Message

Happy Mother’s Day! This week we honor mothers because of hallmark. But motherhood deserves honor and recognition. The Bible is full of women heroes. Our culture look at the Old Testament as an archaic, outdated document. In fact, for it’s time, the bible was extraordinarily positive in it’s portrayal of women.

Just look at the book of Exodus which is the subject of our current sermon series. The first people to stand up to the heinous Pharaoh are women. He orders, with the looming punishment of death, Hebrew midwives to murder all of the male babies. The courageously do not execute his plans. They feared God more than Pharaoh. God blessed the courageous actions of these women.  Mothers hid their boys and did everything they could to save them. Moses’ mother sent him into a basket on the river rather than let him be killed. Moses’ sister guarded her brother from afar, watching from the banks. The daughter of Pharaoh found Moses and defied her father by protecting the baby. All of this is in the first two chapters of Exodus. Later in the book, God describes Moses’ sister as a leader and a prophetess.

God created male and female and it was good. We need strong women who are brave for the Lord. God said “Be fruitful and multiply.” The calling to motherhood was in the beginning. Thankfully, women continue to followed the Lord into this vocation. I thank the Lord for my mother, Rosalie Jonas. She is a faithful woman who was my biggest influence in maturing as a Christian. She had the strength to raise two kids on her own after my father died. She openly spoke about her faith. I still go to her with prayer requests because she is the greatest woman of prayer I know. Our church is filled with wonderful women who love Jesus. They should be honored every day, including this Sunday.
