Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution1 John 1:8; John 3:16; Matthew 5:16
P:  As we begin a new Church Year, let us put behind us everything in the past that would disqualify us from a new life, and remembering our Baptism, we boldly petition our Savior Jesus Christ, seeking for our entry into His presence and His plan and future for us, saying, stir up Your power, O Lord, and come,
C:  that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance.
P:  What are those threatening perils? I now ask you before God, who searches the heart, do you sincerely confess that you have sinned against God and deserved His wrath and punishment?
C:  I do confess.
P:  So you should confess as Holy Scripture says, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Do you also repent of all your sins committed in thought, word, and deed?
C:  I do repent.
P:  So you should repent as did King David, who prayed for a contrite heart; Peter, who wept bitterly; the sinful woman; the prodigal son; and others. Do you sincerely believe that God, by grace, for Jesus’ sake, will forgive you all your sins?
C:  I do believe.
P:  So you should believe as Holy Scripture declares, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Do you promise that with the aid of the Holy Spirit you will amend your sinful life?
C:  I do promise.
P:  So you should promise for Christ the Lord says, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Finally, do you believe that through me, a called servant of God, you will receive the forgiveness of all your sins?
C:  I do believe.
P:  As you believe, even so may it be to you. Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.
P:  Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come,
C:  that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance. Amen.

+ Word +

First ReadingPsalm 12:1-8
Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone;
 for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
Everyone utters lies to his neighbor;
 with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
 the tongue that makes great boasts,
those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
 our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
“Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
 I will now arise,” says the Lord;
 “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.”
The words of the Lord are pure words,
 like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
 purified seven times.
You, O Lord, will keep them;
 you will guard us from this generation forever.
On every side the wicked prowl,
 as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 1:3–9
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge—even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you—so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Mark 11:1-10
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the eleventh chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Hymn – King of Kings (AGPS 151)

King of kings and Lord of lords, glory, hallelujah!
King of kings and Lord of lords, glory, hallelujah!
Jesus, Prince of Peace, glory, hallelujah!
Jesus, Prince of Peace, glory, hallelujah!

Children’s Sermon

Hymn of the Day – The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want (LSB 710)

The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want;
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.
My soul He doth restore again
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
E’en for His own name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For Thou art with me, and Thy rod
And staff me comfort still.

My table Thou hast furnishèd
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.

Sermon
Nicene Creed
C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

     And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,      begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven      and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;     and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

     And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Closing Hymn – Christ Be My Leader (LSB 861)

Christ be my Leader by night as by day;
Safe through the darkness, for He is the way.
Gladly I follow, my future His care,
Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

Christ be my Teacher in age as in youth,
Drifting or doubting, for He is the truth.
Grant me to trust Him; though shifting as sand,
Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

Christ be my Savior in calm as in strife;
Death cannot hold me, for He is the life.
Nor darkness nor doubting nor sin and its stain
Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.

Thanksgiving Eve

Organ Prelude Now Thank We All Our God

Greeting and Welcome

Hymn of Invocation – Come, Ye Thankful People, Come (LSB 892)

Come, ye thankful people, come;
Raise the song of harvest home.
All be safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin;
God, our maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied.
Come to God’s own temple, come;
Raise the song of harvest home.

All the world is God’s own field,
Fruit unto His praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown,
Unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade and then the ear,
Then the full corn shall appear.
Lord of harvest, grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be.

Even so, Lord, quickly come
To Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in,
Free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified,
In Thy garner to abide:
Come with all Thine angels, come,
Raise the glorious harvest home.

+ Preparation +

Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Opening SentencesPsalm 95:1–2; 100:4–5; 147:1, 7
P:  Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
C:  Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!
P:  Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
C:  Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre!
P:  Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name!
C:  For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.

Confession and Absolution
P:  I will go to the altar of God,
C:  to God my exceeding joy.
P:  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
C:  Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
P:  Let us then confess our sins to God, our gracious Father.
C:  Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Creator of all things, we confess that we are indeed sinful. We have broken our fellowship with You and have turned away from one another in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not done the good You demand. We have not lived lives that are continuing expressions of gratitude. We do repent and are truly sorry for all of our sins. Have mercy on us because of Jesus, our Lord and the source of our salvation. Grant that, by the working of the Holy Spirit, we live faithfully and with full thankfulness until that time when we rejoice together in Your eternal presence.
P:  God has promised forgiveness to those who repent of their sins and turn to Him for grace. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord keep you steadfast in the Holy Spirit, lead you to greater faith and obedience, grant you a spirit of ongoing thankfulness, and finally bring you to live with Him forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Salutation and Prayer of the Day
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Let us pray. Almighty God, Your mercies are new every morning and You graciously provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your goodness, give thanks for Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience all our days; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

Old Testament Reading Psalm 9:1–10
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
 I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
 I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
When my enemies turn back,
 they stumble and perish before your presence.
For you have maintained my just cause;
 you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.
You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;
 you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
 their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished.
But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
 he has established his throne for justice,
and he judges the world with righteousness;
 he judges the peoples with uprightness.
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
 a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
 for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Philippians 4:6–20
…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Luke 17:11–19
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventeenth chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.

On the way to Jerusalem [Jesus] was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.
And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day – Now Thank We All Our God (LSB 895)

Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mothers’ arms
Has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.

Oh, may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessèd peace to cheer us
And keep us in His grace
And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next!

All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns
With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heav’n adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

Sermon

Apostles' Creed
C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church
P:  Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord, on this day we thank You for Your bountiful gifts to all of us. We remember Your many acts of kindness to Your people through all ages. We bless You for the orderly progression of the seasons and thank You for the bountiful harvest of the fruits of the earth. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer.
P:  We thank You for the Church, asking that the message of salvation joyfully be proclaimed throughout all the world. Bless the work of missionaries, teachers, health workers, and all others who share their faith in countless ways. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer.
P:  We thank You for the world in which we live and pray for the community of nations. Continue to give us all things needful, and grant that we be good stewards of the earth. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer.
P:  We thank You for the gift of our families and everyone in them. Help us be truly thankful not only for the material blessings in our lives but for the people who share our lives with us. Grant that our homes be places of love and care and our neighborhoods be welcoming sanctuaries for all. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer.
P:  We thank You for the faithful labor of people living out their vocations for our welfare. Today we ask a special blessing on the military forces of our nation, those stationed both at home and abroad, whose efforts serve to defend our nation in challenging times and who guarantee our safety in times of peace. And we remember those whose labor brings food to our tables in this and in every season. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer.
P:  We thank You that Your care embraces all people as we remember those with special concerns and needs including the ill, hospitalized, and those shut-in, those who sorrow, the unemployed, and underemployed. Help us to find purpose and blessing in assisting those who need the care and compassion that we can offer them. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer.
P:  Merciful God, in our thankful remembrance we recall those no longer among us on earth, who now rejoice in the glorious light of Your heavenly kingdom. Grant that we be inspired by their faithful witness as we look forward to that time when we rejoice together at Your heavenly throne, giving You eternal thanks and praise. Lord, in Your mercy,
C:  hear our prayer. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
P:  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

Proclamation of Christ
P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Closing Hymn – Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (LSB 686)

Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
While the hope of endless glory
Fills my heart with joy and love,
Teach me ever to adore Thee;
May I still Thy goodness prove.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be;
Let that grace now like a fetter
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

Oh, that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in the blood-washed linen,
How I’ll sing Thy wondrous grace!
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry;
Take my ransom’d soul away;
Send Thine angels soon to carry
Me to realms of endless day.
