Worthy of Worship - article by Joel Hempel

Why do you come to church? To visit with friends? To eat Lisa’s baked goods? What do you get out of worship? Do you grow in faith? Become inspired to serve the Lord? Increase your knowledge of God’s Word? Those are all good reasons for making the trip. But there is one purpose I’m guessing you realize was not included among the reasons:

To worship the One – the only One – who is worthy of worship!

Corporate worship, from the invocation to the benediction, is first and foremost about recognizing who God is in all his magnificence and glory, what he sacrificed and completed in and through Jesus on the cross, and what he continues to give us through the Spirit of Christ who is beyond and yet within us.

So, whether it is the hymns and songs we are singing, the creeds we are confessing, the lessons we are reading, the message we are hearing, the sacraments we are receiving, or the absolution we are needing – in ALL of it, we look for God’s action toward us: His saving grace, the richness of his mercy, and his never-ending love SO THAT we can then thank him, praise him, and give him all the glory that only He deserves (see 1 Chronicles 16:25; Psalm 8:1; Psalm 29:1-2; Psalm 95:1-6; 1 Timothy 1:17; Revelation 4:11).

However, I’m guessing that most of you are like me in that we need a lot of help to worship in the manner described above. I am also guessing that you bring many distractions to church as do I: challenges at work and in our families, physical and mental health issues, disappointments and irritations, to name a few. On the one hand, we’d like to leave all of that at the entrance to the sanctuary, but it is not realistic to expect that of ourselves. So, if you are like me, we need help from all of the elements of worship named above to get us out of ourselves and into God and the glory we want to give him. That’s one of the reasons I loved the Hymn of the Month for June: Worthy of Worship. Thank you, Seth, for choosing it:

Almighty Father, Master and Lord

King of all kings and Redeemer

Wonderful Counselor, Comforter, Friend

Savior and Source of our life without end.

Refrain: You are worthy Father Creator

You are worthy Savior Sustainer

You are worthy, worthy and wonderful

Worthy of worship and praise.

Of course, I’m confident you would agree God is worthy of worship not only when a community of believers decides to gather for worship, but at all times and in all places as we reflect on the greatness of God and His perfect love (see Colossians 3:16-17; Romans 12:1).

But this article is about the people of God gathered to give glory and honor to the Only One deserving of such unrestrained praise.

Spiritual and worship leaders: Thank you for all the effort and time you invest in helping the rest of us see God in all His greatness, and freeing us to explode with the joy of our salvation!

Hymn of Invocation – I Know My Faith Is Founded (LSB 587)

I know my faith is founded

On Jesus Christ, my God and Lord;

And this my faith confessing,

Unmoved I stand on His sure Word.

Our reason cannot fathom

The truth of God profound;

Who trusts in human wisdom

Relies on shifting ground.

God’s Word is all-sufficient,

It makes divinely sure;

And trusting in its wisdom,

My faith shall rest secure.

Increase my faith, dear Savior,

For Satan seeks by night and day

To rob me of this treasure

And take my hope of bliss away.

But, Lord, with You beside me,

I shall be undismayed;

And led by Your good Spirit,

I shall be unafraid.

Abide with me, O Savior,

A firmer faith bestow;

Then I shall bid defiance

To ev’ry evil foe.

In faith, Lord, let me serve You;

Though persecution, grief, and pain

Should seek to overwhelm me,

Let me a steadfast trust retain;

And then at my departure,

Lord, take me home to You,

Your riches to inherit

As all You said holds true.

In life and death, Lord, keep me

Until Your heav’n I gain,

Where I by Your great mercy

The end of faith attain.

Invocation

P: In the name of God the Father,

C: who created us and all things and invites us to worship Him in this place as His beloved children;

P: in the name of God the + Son,

C: who gave His life for our forgiveness and salvation;

P: in the name of God the Holy Spirit,

C: who calls us in faith, gathers us together in His church, and enlightens our faith through the Word. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Introit

P: Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessèd is the man who takes refuge in him!

C: For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place:

P: “This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

C: I will abundantly bless her provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread.

P: Her priests I will clothe with salvation, and her saints will shout for joy.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessèd is the man who takes refuge in him!

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. O Lord, though we are unworthy, You show mercy. Though we are underserving, You pour out Your grace. Though we fail, You grant us forgiveness.

C: In our callings in faith and sent as Your people, sustain us through Your Spirit that we together as Your church may serve You in joy and gladness;

P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingEcclesiastes 1:1-18

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again. All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted. I said in my heart, “I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.” And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind. For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 2 Corinthians 12:1–10

I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMark 6:1-13

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus] went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts—but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”

So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Jesus Loves Me (LSB 588)

Jesus loves me! This I know,

For the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong;

They are weak, but He is strong. Refrain

Refrain: Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died

Heaven’s gates to open wide.

He has washed away my sin,

Lets His little child come in. Refrain

Children’s Sermon – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (LSB 575)

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

No merit of my own I claim

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. Refrain

Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In ev’ry high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil. Refrain

His oath, His covenant and blood

Support me in the raging flood;

When ev’ry earthly prop gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay. Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found,

Clothed in His righteousness alone,

Redeemed to stand before His throne! Refrain

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Holy Father, by Your Spirit You brought me to faith and made me a member of His Body, the church. I thank You that You daily and richly forgive my many sins, giving me comfort and peace in this life and a certain hope for the life to come. Give me joy in the promise You made to me in Baptism and a ready heart to hear and keep Your Word; through Jesus Christ, my Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Lamb of God (LSB 550)

Your only Son, no sin to hide,

But You have sent Him from Your side

To walk upon this guilty sod,

And to become the Lamb of God. Refrain

Refrain: O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,

I love the holy Lamb of God!

O wash me in His precious blood,

My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Your Gift of love they crucified,

They laughed and scorned Him as He died:

The humble King they named a fraud,

And sacrificed the Lamb of God. Refrain

I was so lost, I should have died,

But You have brought me to Your side

To be led by Your staff and rod,

And to be called a lamb of God. Refrain

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Faith and Truth and Life Bestowing (LSB 584)

Faith and truth and life bestowing,

Open now the Scriptures, Lord,

Seed to life eternal sowing,

Scattered on the wind abroad.

Let not hearts, Your Word receiving,

Like a barren field be found,

Choked with thorns and unbelieving,

Shallow earth or stony ground.

May the Spirit’s pow’r unceasing

Bring to life the hidden grain,

Daily in our hearts increasing,

Bearing fruit that shall remain.

So in Scripture, song, and story,

Savior, may Your voice be heard.

Till our eyes behold Your glory

Give us ears to hear Your Word.
