Weekly Newsletter

Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
March 3, 2022
This week we have two very special opportunities. On Sunday during the adult Bible study, Dr. John Eckrich M.D. will begin a series on Health and Wellness that continues through all of March. Dr. Eckrich taught our elders and deacons about healing a couple of weeks ago. He is a Lutheran physician and founder of Grace Place Wellness--a retreat based organization that teaches wellness life practices to encourage joy, vibrancy , and longevity in ministry professions. As a board certified internist and gastroenterologist for over 40 years, he brings a unique perspective on the stewardship of the whole person--body, mind and spirit. He has written these books: Resilient Aging and Wellness, Fear, Anxiety and Wellness, and Vocation and Wellness.

Sunday prepares us for Wednesday's Lenten service which will focus on healing. We will sing “Jesus Comes Today with Healing”, pray, and read scriptures on Jesus as healer. I will do a short message introducing the Laying on of hands described in the Bible. Then we will have a time for people to come forward for healing. Someone will ask, “What would you like Jesus to heal today?” The person can share any physical, emotional or spiritual problem. The team will pray over them and anoint with oil just like we do on Ash Wednesday minus the ashes. Music will be playing. People in the pews can pray. Your request for healing will be heard only by the pastor, elder and deacon.

God wants you to be healthy and whole. Take advantage of Sunday's teaching and Wednesday's Healing service.

Birthday Bags Finale!

On Tuesday, March 1, Beth Nicolaus, Cathie Albers and myself, Marcia Hempel, loaded up our cars to the fullest and drove them out to be delivered to Operation Food Search. It was announced on Sunday that 75 bags were being taken but, in the meantime, 6 more bags appeared to make our contribution 81 bags! This is spectacular. Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make many children/families happy through these next months.

Healing Through God's Messengers - article by Joel Hempel

A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Scott preached about healing and how God works in our lives. The sermon and the gospel lesson from John chapter nine served as a bridge to the healing service planned for Wednesday, March 9.

During the Lenten service, Pastor Scott will invite all who want to receive prayer and anointing to come forward. We will then go to one of the two prayer teams. As we stand there with our sister and brother, we will be invited to share – in confidence – that for which we need healing.

Many things get damaged in our lives: Our health, emotions, relationships, a loved one, our world. It could also be a spiritual crisis in one’s life – for example, sin that has a grip on us or a challenge for which we need God’s wisdom and guidance. We are invited to bring any concern to a prayer team.

Of course, you don’t have to share your concern with a prayer team to receive God’s healing. But Pastor Scott reminded us this past Sunday that God often makes his presence known through the care and love of a brother or sister in Christ.

A few weeks ago at Baseball Darts, Commissioner Rodger Lubben asked me to give a brief devotion. I began by asking three questions: Do you have a challenge beyond your ability to handle? Do you have stress in your life that has felt overwhelming at times? Do you have concern for someone close to you who is hurting or in trouble? Seven of the nine people present answered yes to at least one of those questions.

The response to those questions tells me that most of us are walking around with physical, emotional, or spiritual pain – pain that needs healing.

God wants to heal each of us. Will our thorn be removed? I don’t know. I pray it will. Will we be given the grace to carry the burden or manage the pain? Count on it! The promise God made to Paul he makes to us. His grace is sufficient. The particular grace God will offer on March 9 is the grace of a brother and sister receiving your concern, holding it with compassion, and offering it to God for his blessing and mercy.

Something extraordinary occurs when someone listens deeply to your pain, hears your need, and then anoints you with oil and offers a prayer for healing.

Hymn of Invocation – Eternal Father, Strong to Save (LSB 717)

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain,
O’er which our traffic runs amain
By mountain pass or valley low;
Wherever, Lord, Thy people go,
Protect them by Thy guarding hand
From ev’ry peril on the land.

O Spirit, whom the Father sent
To spread abroad the firmament;
O Wind of heaven, by Thy might
Save all who dare the eagle’s flight,
And keep them by Thy watchful care
From ev’ry peril in the air.

O Trinity of love and pow’r,
Our people shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe’er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad praise from air and land and sea.

+ Preparation +

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.
P:  Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C:  who made heaven and earth.
P:  If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C:  But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.
P:  Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
C:  Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.
P:  Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C:  Amen.

Introit
P:  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.
C:  With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.
P:  Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—
C:  no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
P:  For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
C:  On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
P:  You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen
P:  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.
C:  With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Let us pray. O Lord God, You led Your ancient people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide the people of Your Church that following our Savior we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

First ReadingDeuteronomy 26:1–11
“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’ Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God.
“And you shall make response before the Lord your God, ‘A wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me.’ And you shall set it down before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God. And you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 10:8–13
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – John 11:45-55
P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eleventh chapter.
C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.
Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.
Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – God Is So Good (AGPS 107)

God is so good, God is so good,
God is so good, He’s so good to me.

He cares for me, He cares for me,
He cares for me, He’s so good to me.

He loves me so, He loves me so,
He loves me so, He’s so good to me.

Children’s Sermon – Steph Chapa

Hymn of the Day – A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth (LSB 438)

A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth,
The guilt of sinners bearing
And, laden with the sins of earth,
None else the burden sharing;
Goes patient on, grows weak and faint,
To slaughter led without complaint,
That spotless life to offer,
He bears the stripes, the wounds, the lies,
The mockery, and yet replies,
“All this I gladly suffer.”

This Lamb is Christ, the soul’s great friend,
The Lamb of God, our Savior,
Whom God the Father chose to send
To gain for us His favor.
“Go forth, My Son,” the Father said,
“And free My children from their dread
Of guilt and condemnation.
The wrath and stripes are hard to bear,
But by Your passion they will share
The fruit of Your salvation.”

“Yes, Father, yes, most willingly
I’ll bear what You command Me.
My will conforms to Your decree,
I’ll do what You have asked Me.”
O wondrous Love, what have You done!
The Father offers up His Son,
Desiring our salvation.
O Love, how strong You are to save!
You lay the One into the grave
Who built the earth’s foundation.

Preface
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Lift up your hearts.
C:  We lift them to the Lord.
P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored;
Heav'n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name.
Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord;
Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Prayer of Thanksgiving
P:  Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini
P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:  Amen.

Agnus Dei
O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,
You take the sin of the world away;
O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,
Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,
You take the sin of the world away;
Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ,
And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord (LSB 637)

Draw near and take the body of the Lord,
And drink the holy blood for you outpoured;
Offered was He for greatest and for least,
Himself the victim and Himself the priest.

He who His saints in this world rules and shields,
To all believers life eternal yields;
With heav’nly bread He makes the hungry whole,
Gives living waters to the thirsting soul.

Come forward then with faithful hearts sincere,
And take the pledges of salvation here.
O Lord, our hearts with grateful thanks endow
As in this feast of love You bless us now.

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis
O Lord, now let Your servant
Depart in heav'nly peace,
For I have seen the glory
Of Your redeeming grace:
A light to lead the Gentiles
Unto Your holy hill,
The glory of Your people,
Your chosen Israel.

All glory to the Father,
All glory to the Son,
All glory to the Spirit,
Forever Three in One;
For as in the beginning,
Is now, shall ever be,
God's triune name resounding
Through all eternity.
Post-Communion Collect
P:  Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

Benedicamus and Benediction
P:  Let us bless the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.
P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – God of Grace and God of Glory (LSB 870)

God of grace and God of glory,
On Your people pour Your pow’r;
Crown Your ancient Church’s story;
Bring its bud to glorious flow’r.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
For the facing of this hour,
For the facing of this hour.

Lo, the hosts of evil round us
Scorn the Christ, assail His ways!
From the fears that long have bound us
Free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
For the living of these days,
For the living of these days.

Cure Your children’s warring madness;
Bend our pride to Your control;
Shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
Rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
Lest we miss Your kingdom’s goal,
Lest we miss Your kingdom’s goal.

Save us from weak resignation
To the evils we deplore;
Let the gift of Your salvation
Be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Serving You whom we adore,
Serving You whom we adore.
