What's Love Got to Do with It? - article by Joel Hempel


Tina Turner asked the question, but Jesus gave the answer: Everything! For Christians, love has everything to do with being Christian. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind (Matthew 22:37-39; Mark 12:30-31). “And the second is like unto it; you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” All other commandments can be understood in light of these two all-encompassing mandates. 


What would Glendale Lutheran Church (and each of us individually) look like if these two Jesus-directed commands were our passion and practice? The first thing to clarify is that the kind of love Jesus talked about has little to do with passion. God’s love for us and our love for God and others is first and foremost about action. Christian love does not wait until it feels right. It acts! 


Driving to Dierbergs one day to pick up a couple of items for Marcia, I pulled into the ramp going up into the plaza. But parked in the middle of the ramp was a car that had broken down. So, what did I do? I did what every not-so-good Samaritan does. I backed up and drove by on the other side, up the down ramp into the plaza. 


But the whole time in the store, I felt guilty and thought about what I did not do. I hurried to find the items Marcia wanted, checked out, and quickly went to my car. As I approached the ramp, I saw that a police car had pulled up behind the stalled car, and both the police officer and driver were looking under the hood. I felt better, but only for a moment. 


I neither loved God nor my neighbor as myself! Once again, I was convicted by the laws to love self-sacrificially. Although I obviously have not forgotten this incident that took place a few years ago, and although I felt the shame of my inaction until recently, I am grateful for our God of Love, who I know has forgiven me. 


Some of you, I know, would have immediately stopped to help the person. Others may have left the plaza by a different exit. But all of us can be eternally grateful for our Lord’s ever-present love and immediately available forgiveness. For it is because of God’s compassion and Spirit-empowering mercy that we can get past our guilt and onto the next opportunity to not pass by on the other side.

Summer Jobs for Teens


Know someone who loves babysitting, church nursery, VBS, or summer camp? Great hours and great pay rate for teens 16+ at our Kirkwood campus this summer. Spend your afternoons with 2-year-olds through 5-year-olds enjoying outdoor fun, Bible lessons, and of course Water Wednesdays! Job runs June 1 through July 31 (we can work around your family vacation schedule). Afternoon shifts typically 1:30-5:30, flex hours available. Pay rate $13/hr. Training provided.

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

 

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

First Reading - Ezekiel 37:1–14

The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.”

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. Second ReadingRomans 8:1–11

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Catechism – The Third Petition of the Lord’s Prayer

P: What is the Third Petition?

C: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

P: What does this mean?

C: The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.

P: How is God’s will done?

C: God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.


Gospel Matthew 25:14–30

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

P: Abide with us, Lord, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. Abide with us and with Your whole Church. Abide with us at the end of the day, at the end of our life, at the end of the world. Abide with us with Your grace and goodness, with Your holy Word and Sacraments, with Your strength and blessing. Abide with us when the night of affliction and temptation comes upon us, the night of fear and despair, the night when death draws near. Abide with us and with all the faithful, now and forever.

P: Heavenly Father, ruler of all things and generous with mercy to all who call upon You, Your Son granted healing and relief to many who came to Him in their need. Mercifully come to the aid of Your servants for whom we pray now, that in accord with Your will, they may be restored to health and given patience for the day of their trouble and hope at the last, until with a thankful heart they rejoice in Your presence with saints and angels in perfect healing; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night.
