How Rich is Rich? - article by Joel Hempel

According to an article I read that quoted the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), the following are the top 10%, top 5%, and top 1% of household annual incomes in the US:

  • Top 10% = $248.610
  • Top 5% = $390,209
  • Top 1% = $1,199,812

There’s no doubt about it. Marcia and I are richer than we ever thought we would be when we served as inner-city missionaries in Cincinnati. But coming to St Louis created opportunities for both of us that we could not have anticipated when we accepted God’s call. We never reached the 10% household income, but we are wealthier than much of the world’s population.

How rich is rich?

The rich man in the Gospel lesson from Mark 10 was too rich. He was so rich he could not conceive of giving it all up for Jesus – unlike the poor widow in Luke 21, who gave God all she had to live on.

Could you give it all up for Jesus if he asked for it?

Jesus will likely not ask any of us to put all of our wealth into God’s hands, but he may be asking us to give more than we are presently giving. One of our greatest sins of omission may be how much we keep for ourselves v. what we give to others in need.

There are six key words in the Gospel lesson from Mark 10:17-22, Jesus looking at him, loved him. If only the man could have seen the love in Jesus’ eyes! God’s love never asks of us what is beyond our grace-empowered ability to give and his all-encompassing promise to bless.

We don’t know the back story of what happened to the widow Jesus observed giving her last two pennies to God (Luke 21:1-4). I like to think Jesus walked up to her on her way home, chatted for a while, then thanked her and walked away. By the time the unsuspecting widow got home, her pantry was filled with all she would ever need. Or maybe she died penniless and entered eternity with a smile, knowing she was able to love God, having been loved by God throughout her life.

The Gospel lesson in Mark has less to do with money and more to do with what has a death-hold on us. Put another way, what are you holding onto that is holding onto you?

Jesus is looking at us with eyes of love. Letting go of whatever threatens our life and well-being will not bring poverty. It will bring great wealth.

Voters' Meeting

The Leadership Council has scheduled a Voters’ Meeting for this Sunday, October 27, 2024, immediately following service where our primary agenda item will be to elect Leadership Council Members and Elders. Leadership Council candidates include Michael Barbercheck and Andy Ryan, both of whom have accepted nominations to serve their second three-year terms. Additionally, Mimi Schaefer has accepted a nomination to join the Council for her first three-year term. For Elders, Mike Toney has accepted a nomination to continue his service to the Congregation. In addition to Leadership Council and Elder elections, we will be providing our quarterly update regarding the congregation’s finances. We look forward to seeing everyone!

Sunday School Report

We wanted to let everyone know Sunday School is off to a wonderful start for the year under Steph Chapa’s and Kelsey Johnson’s direction. Currently, there are nine children ages 2 through 8 that attend every Sunday morning following service. Kelsey teaches the 2- to 4-year-old class upstairs in her CCLS classroom while Steph handles the 5- to 8-year-olds downstairs. The children and teachers are having a wonderful time reading Bible stories and alternate between each Sunday’s readings, a Jesus story, and the Old Testament Classics. Please reach out to either of them if you are interested in substituting or teaching. Thanks Steph and Kelsey for your hard work!

Hymn of Invocation – A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (LSB 656)

A mighty fortress is our God,

A trusty shield and weapon;

He helps us free from ev’ry need

That hath us now o’ertaken.

The old evil foe

Now means deadly woe;

Deep guile and great might

Are his dread arms in fight;

On earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done,

Soon were our loss effected;

But for us fights the valiant One,

Whom God Himself elected.

Ask ye, Who is this?

Jesus Christ it is,

Of Sabaoth Lord,

And there’s none other God;

He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill,

All eager to devour us,

We tremble not, we fear no ill;

They shall not overpow’r us.

This world’s prince may still

Scowl fierce as he will,

He can harm us none.

He’s judged; the deed is done;

One little word can fell him.

The Word they still shall let remain

Nor any thanks have for it;

He’s by our side upon the plain

With His good gifts and Spirit.

And take they our life,

Goods, fame, child, and wife,

Though these all be gone,

Our vict’ry has been won;

The Kingdom ours remaineth.

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Opening SentencesPsalm 41:13; 79:9, 13; 125:1–2

P: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,

C: from everlasting to everlasting!

P: Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for Your name’s sake!

C: We Your people, the sheep of Your pasture, will give thanks to You forever; from generation to generation we will recount Your praise.

P: Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

C: As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people, from this time forth and forevermore.

Confession and AbsolutionPsalm 130

P: Beloved in the Lord, let us come before our gracious Lord to confess our sins and to receive His gracious absolution.

C: Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!

P: If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

C: But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

P: O Israel, hope in the LORD!

C: For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with Him is plentiful redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

P: God has promised His forgiveness of sins to those who repentantly confess their sins, imploring His grace and mercy for the sake of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, as His called and ordained servant, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingRevelation 14:6–7

Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 12:9-21

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelJohn 8:31-36

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Rejoice in the Lord Always (AGPS 203)

Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.

Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.

Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice.

Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say rejoice.

Children’s Sermon – Jon Chapa

Hymn of the Day – Beautiful Savior (LSB 537)

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,

Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,

Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,

He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,

Bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer

Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, praise, adoration

Now and forevermore be Thine!

Choral OffertoryHe Will Hold Me Fast

(Lyrics provided for reflection)

When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast;

When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast.

I could never keep my hold through life’s fearful path;

For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast.

Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast;

Precious in His holy sight, He will hold me fast.

He’ll not let my soul be lost; His Promises shall last;

Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast.

For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast;

Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast.

Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast

‘Till our faith is turned to sight, when He comes at last!

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes

in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and have given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. We thank You for having called us as Your people who are kept by Your abiding care in this, our contentious world. Grant that all who partake of Christ’s holy body and blood this day be filled with Your heavenly peace and joy. As we join at Your Table, grant that we be sanctified in body and soul and spirit and finally be granted our place in Your eternal kingdom. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – I Lay My Sins on Jesus (LSB 606)

I lay my sins on Jesus,

The spotless Lamb of God;

He bears them all and frees us

From the accursèd load.

I bring my guilt to Jesus

To wash my crimson stains

Clean in His blood most precious

Till not a spot remains.

I lay my wants on Jesus;

All fullness dwells in Him;

He heals all my diseases;

My soul He does redeem.

I lay my griefs on Jesus,

My burdens and my cares;

He from them all releases;

He all my sorrows shares.

I rest my soul on Jesus,

This weary soul of mine;

His right hand me embraces;

I on His breast recline.

I love the name of Jesus,

Immanuel, Christ, the Lord;

Like fragrance on the breezes

His name abroad is poured.

Blessing

C: Amen.
