The Church God Calls Us to Be - article by Joel Hempel

Fast approaching are the three Sundays when we Discern God’s Will for GLC. On September 7, 14, and 21, we will enter a prayer and Bible study process that will seek to discern God’s will for our future. You say you have some thoughts about the direction we need to take? Your thoughts are important, but not most important. More than anything, we want to listen to what God has to say in His Word.

As a way to begin reflecting on God’s will for his church – not just ours, but the church as a whole, here’s a quote from the book, Vanishing Grace  by Philip Yancey1:

A pastor friend of mine did a series of sermons on the phrase ‘one another.’ He found twenty-nine uses of that word in the New Testament, which, taken together, show what a true community would look like. They include the following:

Love one another

Forgive one another

Pray for one another

Bear one another’s burdens

Be devoted to one another

Regard one another as more important than yourself

Do not speak against one another

Do not judge one another

Show tolerance for one another

Be kind to one another

Speak truth to one another

Build up one another

Comfort one another

Care for one another

Stimulate one another to love and good deeds

I wonder how different the church would look to a watching world, not to mention how different history would look, if Christians everywhere followed that model.

In part, the list you just read is the ideal for the church as we seek to be the body of Christ. Of course, there is also the instruction Scripture gives for reaching out with the Gospel to a broken and hurting world. But none of the reaching in or reaching out can be accomplished without the Spirit of God, who is our Hope and Help.

Whether you are a member of GLC2 or some other church, we are dependent on God’s mercy and forgiveness. For whatever direction the Spirit leads us, we will make many mistakes along the way. But by his grace, we will succeed if we keep our eyes on Jesus and his leadership.

Christ be my leader by night as by day; Safe through the darkness, for He is the way. Gladly I follow, my future His care, Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.3

  • August 17: Sign-up begins for Small Group participation in Discerning God’s Will for GLC. [NOTE: For those who are unable to participate in-person, you will be able to do so remotely. Let Pastor Scott or Joel know, and arrangements will be made. You and the Spirit’s input are needed.]

2025 Glendale Congregation Hymn Sing

"Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us."  - Martin Luther

I do not know a time without music - specifically the music of the church. Having been raised in church my entire life, I have heard and sung various styles of music in worship, including: southern gospel, classical masses and requiems, Christian praise songs of the 90s and even the worship songs found on contemporary Christian radio today. All of these have a story to tell and a purpose for the Church of God in our present day. Some songs turn our focus upward to God and celebrate who He is. While others tell stories of the human experience and how God works on earth to bring comfort and hope.

To celebrate the rich heritage of music in the church, we will worship with a Congregation Hymn Sing on Sunday, August 31. We want to sing the songs that mean something to you! If you click on this link you'll find a form to fill out. Please submit any and all hymns you'd like to sing that day. Together we will remember all of the ways God has met us through the music of the church. I look forward to our day of celebration on August 31!

Choir Rehearsals Return!

Join us on Tuesday nights at 7:00pm for choir rehearsals. We will be working on anthems for worship this fall and even looking ahead to the holidays! Rehearsals will resume on Tuesday, August 19. See you then!

Kirk Care

Thank you to everyone who has dropped off non-perishable food and supplies in the narthex cart. When I delivered them to Kirk Care this week, the coordinator expressed her gratitude and shared that while all donations—including the usual items like cereals, canned fruits and vegetables, etc.—are appreciated, pasta sauce (in cans or plastic) is especially needed. Laundry detergent and other cleaning supplies are also often overlooked but very helpful.

Thank you for supporting those in need.
