Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation –575 My Hope is Built on Nothing Less

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

No merit of my own I claim

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,

rest on His unchanging grace;

In ev’ry high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil. Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found,

Clothed in His righteousness alone,

Redeemed to stand before His throne! Refrain

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES          Habakkuk 1:2; 2:4

P         Although we may say with Habakkuk,

C         “O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and You will not hear?”

P         The Lord has answered,

C         “The righteous shall live by his faith.”

Confession and Absolution

P. Having heard the complaint of the prophet Habakkuk, let us confess our sins.

C: We confess, almighty God, that we have not trusted Your promises; we have

wondered if You have heard our cries for help. In our own sinfulness, we confess

that we have considered ourselves better than others. We have failed by our sinful

thoughts, words, and deeds. We are helpless to change without Your grace and

mercy. For Jesus’ sake, forgive us and renew our trust in Your promises and

protection.

P The prophet did not get an answer about when his prayers would be answered by almighty God, but he trusted nonetheless. Faith is a gift from God by which we can trust Him, hear the Good News, and truly listen. Through the sacrifice of His Son for us, God declares us righteous even as we struggle in our daily problems. The promises of God were all kept by our Lord Jesus Christ. In His Son’s resurrection, we receive the promise of eternal life. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C.   Amen. Thanks be to God.

+ Word +

KYRIE

P In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

C. Lord, have mercy, and the righteous shall live by faith.

P. For peace from above in times of trial and weak faith, let us pray to the Lord.

C. Lord, have mercy, and the righteous shall live by faith.

P. For peace in the world and the bold proclamation of the Gospel, let us pray to the Lord.

C. Lord, have mercy, and the righteous shall live by faith.

P For ourselves and all who join us to listen to God’s Word and respond in worship and

prayer, let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy, and the righteous shall live by faith.

P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C Amen.

ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P. Let us pray. O God, our refuge and strength, the author of all godliness, by Your grace

hear the prayers of Your Church.

C. Grant that those things which we ask in faith we may receive through Your

bountiful mercy;

P. Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

C. Amen.

First Reading –Nehemiah 1:1–11

The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the capital, that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem. And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.”

As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your dispersed be under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ 1They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. 1O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”

Now I was cupbearer to the king.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – Philippians 1:12–14, 19–30

I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

 For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 20: 1-16

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twentieth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

C:   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Preface

P     The Lord be with you.

C     And also with you.

P     Lift up your hearts.

C     We lift them to the Lord.

P     Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C     It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P     It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness. By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell. Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C     Amen.

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, O Lord eternal, and blessed be Your name. In Your great love, You sent Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be the promised Savior, whose life of service fulfilled Your will and completed the work of salvation. With thankfulness, we bless You for all that He has obtained for us. Gather into one, we pray, all Your people who now join at Your holy Table. By Your presence in this Sacrament nourish us, so that all we who partake of Christ’s holy body and blood may be strengthened to serve You and our neighbor, as You would have us do. To You, O God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—be all honor and glory in Your holy Church, forever and ever.

C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

C:  Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Lord Jesus Christ We Humbly Pray (LSB 623)

               Lord Jesus Christ, we humbly pray

That we may feast on You today;

Beneath these forms of bread and wine

Enrich us with Your grace divine.

               Give us, who share this wondrous food,

Your body broken and Your blood,

The grateful peace of sins forgiv’n,

The certain joys of heirs of heav’n.

               By faith Your Word has made us bold

To seize the gift of love retold;

All that You are we here receive,

And all we are to You we give.

               One bread, one cup, one body, we,

Rejoicing in our unity,

Proclaim Your love until You come

To bring Your scattered loved ones home.

               Lord Jesus Christ, we humbly pray:

O keep us steadfast till that day

When each will be Your welcomed guest

In heaven’s high and holy feast.

Closing Hymn – What a Friend we have in Jesus (LSB 770)

  All our sins and griefs to bear!

  What a privilege to carry

  Ev’rything to God in prayer!

  Oh, what peace we often forfeit;

  Oh, what needless pain we bear—

  All because we do not carry

  Ev’rything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations

 Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful

Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our ev’ry weakness—

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,

Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge—

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee;

Thou wilt find a solace there.

This week is your FINAL chance to submit a Vision survey.

https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/ENCsPg

Vision Survey

   So far we have 30 surveys submitted. We have 100 regular worshippers. 190 people receive this email. We need your voice to be heard. The Spirit works through everyone in the church. He has given you valuable insights into the direction He is leading us. Please, share your answers to these simple questions.

   We believe in the priesthood of all believers. We each have been chosen be God through Baptism. He led us to be here at this time and place. He speaks through his word to his people. The Lord has been speaking to you through our worship service. He’s been speaking to you through your Bible Study. He’s been speaking to you through your fellow believers. Now share what’s on your heart. We will discover together the will of God for Glendale Lutheran Church. On Sunday during the offering we will give everyone one last chance to gift the church with this input.

Oktoberfest

Please join us for some fun and fellowship at the Glendale Lutheran Oktoberfest on the patio of the church. Event takes place Saturday October 8 at 6:00p.m. There will be music, games for kids, beer tastings from Gefahrliches Ding Brewery (Tony Petzoldt) and famous Petzoldt brats. Please bring a side dish to share with the group and preferred other beverages.

Always brings out a fun crowd. This is a great event. Come celebrate Oktoberfest at Glendale. See you there!!

Stand Ready - article by Joel Hempel

   For the most part, during our inner city ministry in Cincinnati, there was no threat to our safety. But after being there for about 10 years, I started feeling vulnerable. So, I suggested to Marcia that we take a self-defense class. There are three things I remember from the training: How to punch, how to fall, and how to stand – which the instructor called the "ready stance.” In other words, be mindful of your surroundings and be ready for what might come at you.

   In Sundays sermon, Pastor Scott referred to James 5:8 about the importance of patience and being ready to live in the world with Christ. The NIV translation of that verse states, "be patient and stand firm because the Lord is coming soon." That is, stand with confidence and certainty. In his message, pastor encouraged us to know with certainty that what we are

experiencing is not all there is. There is another life yet to come, a life with Jesus in heaven.

   Although verse 8 refers to the second coming of Christ, it is also true that there is another coming of our Lord – a here and now coming. Verse 11 of Sundays sermon text states, "The Lord is full of compassion and mercy." Gods compassion and mercy are far more than "feeling our pain." Yes, our pain cuts deeply into the heart of Jesus as when he cried over the death of his

friend, Lazarus. But just as his compassion and mercy for Mary and Martha (Lazarus’ sisters) led Jesus to raise Lazarus from the dead, he also comes to us to raise us up.

    It does happen on occasion when our Lord miraculously intervenes in our life to raise us up. Other times – admittedly, most other times – the Spirits intervention is more subtle, though

no less significant.

   As Pastor Scott noted, all of us, sooner or later, will suffer from painful losses or challenges that are overwhelming. At these times, the Holy Spirit gives us courage, strength, and the ability to stand ready in the face of devastating circumstances.

   One of the ways our Lord intervenes to strengthen us and even grant victory is through the community of faith – otherwise known as Glendale Lutheran Church. Outstanding, life- giving resources are available in our little congregation: Worship and Bible studies provide necessary spiritual care. Pastor and deacons reach out to people who are hurting or in need of

support. Meals are spontaneously organized for people who, for the time being, are having difficulty cooking. Emergency financial assistance is offered during hard times. Revitalizing distractions are available through fellowship meals, baseball darts, Pickleball, and even golf –though I risk the wrath of Ronnie by suggesting such a thing.

   Bottom line, we don’t have to wait for the Lord to return at the Second Coming. He comes among us now in many compassionate and merciful ways. Stand ready in your faith to receive him.

Operation Christmas Child... by Carol Froesel

Its time again to fill those shoe boxes that Samaritan Purse sends around the world to spread the Gospel and light up the eyes and hearts of underprivileged children.

I have to apologize that our actual boxes have not yet arrived, but you can begin to gather goodies to pack in them. There are lists of suggestions available on the "Christmas Child" table in the Fellowship room.

Last year our boxes travelled to Rawanda, Africa. Isn't it always exciting to see how far a little love can reach!

Any questions call: Carol Froesel 314-822-1365

Blessings on all our efforts.

Finance Update

Food Drive

The GLC FOOD DRIVE is happening again this year from September 15 - October 15. For our neighbors who have struggled to keep up with essential items for their families or individuals who have limited funds, it has only gotten harder to manage their household with the rising costs of basic needs. .There will be a table in the entry where you can place your contributions. We will have lists from Kirk Care that can help you decide what to purchase. Please Remember NO GLASS is allowed.

If you want to contribute but cannot manage the shopping, you can contribute by giving Cathie Albers or Marcia Hempel cash, we would be grateful to shop for your items. Another choice is to place an envelope in one of our mailboxes.

Thank you for anything you can give.
