Pastor Biermann's Message
January 6th is always the celebration of Epiphany. The twelve days of Christmas come to an end on Thursday evening--it's Twelfth Night, a reason for one last bit of holiday revelry in some European cultures. But, here 12th Night is overlooked along with the Festival of Epiphany that follows it. Perhaps after a long holiday season that stretches from Thanksgiving to New Year's, no enthusiasm remains for one more holiday observation. But, Epiphany should not be ignored. It is the festival of the magi. It is the festival of the gentiles who were welcomed at the celebration of the Messiah's arrival. Epiphany is the gentiles' Christmas. It's your celebration.

The word itself, not surprisingly, comes from Greek and means roughly, "to shine upon." So, the glory of Jesus and the grace of God shine upon the world--an epiphany. Most importantly, that light of God's love and majesty shine on each of us who know his truth through God's gift of faith. God's epiphany floods our lives at the baptismal font when he makes us his own. So, this Sunday, the First Sunday of Epiphany, we celebrate Jesus' coming to the whole world. And on this Sunday, we also recall the revelation of his identity and glory in the Jordan when he was baptized by John. Indeed, this Sunday marks the abrupt shift from thinking of infant Jesus, to beginning the recollection of his years of ministry--a story that will lead into Lent through Calvary and the empty tomb and culminate at the Ascension.

Since Epiphany marks a distinct juncture in the rhythm of the church year, it also provides an excellent occasion for you to adjust your own personal rhythm of worship and walking with Christ. This Sunday would be a very good time to recommit to worshipping with God's people every week, and attending Sunday Bible class every week. You'll have no problem "catching up" with the discussion--even if you've missed other classes. We have worked our way through the preliminaries, and the introductory parts of Peter's first letter. Now, it's time to dig into the "good stuff" of this text packed with meaning. First Peter does have much good stuff. Don't miss out on the learning that is available each Sunday. Who knows, you might even experience an occasional personal epiphany as a light bulb clicks on and God's truth shines a bit more brightly in your life and living.

Bible Class and Sunday School
Bible Class and Sunday School resumes January 8. Join us as we grow in our faith and knowledge of God's word.

Stewardship Sentence
Matthew 3:15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." The reason God sent His Son into the world is to fulfill all righteousness for us, to do what we could not do. So here Jesus plunges Himself into our sins and soaks them up in His baptism, so that in our baptism we might be cleansed and renewed. The whole of Jesus' life, everything He did and said, was one great offering to the Father in our stead to fulfill all righteousness for us. All our offerings back to our Lord are in thanksgiving for this One Great, True Offering.
Update from Pastor Wise
It has been 5 weeks since the surgery to remove my stomach. I have been recovering well from the surgery and I am feeling pretty good right now. I lost 35 lbs overall but have actually put on about 5 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I am being tube fed about 12-13 hours a day, which means my movement is restricted by where I can go with a pole and a bag. I am able now to eat small amounts to supplement the tube feeding, but my diet is still somewhat limited. Soup gets pretty tiring after a while.

I had an appointment with my oncologist today. I can't say it was good news. I already knew that the tumor had spread to involve blood vessels leading to the pancreas and that they could not remove that by surgery, but I learned today that the biopsies of the lymph nodes that were removed came back positive for cancer. That means the cancer is still active in my lymph system. So, that means I will restart chemotherapy in 3 weeks. They will hit me hard just like last time. The doctor wants me to build more strength before going into chemo again. They may add radiation to my treatment either at the same time as or after this next round of chemo. Doctors are still discussing this.

Julie and I want to thank everyone for your cards and notes, and especially your prayers. It helps me stay connected with the congregation, even if just a little bit. I miss each and every one of you. I miss sharing God's Word with you. I miss working for God's kingdom with you. But don't let my absence keep you from moving forward to advance God's kingdom at Glendale. God bless you and God's peace be with you all.
