Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation –790 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

O my soul, praise Him, for He is your health and salvation!

Let all who hear, Now to His temple draw near,

Joining in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning

And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.

Have you not seen, All that is needful has been

Sent by His gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who has fearfully, wondrously, made you,

Health has bestowed and, when heedlessly falling, has stayed you.

What need or grief, Ever has failed of relief?

Wings of His mercy did shade you.

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;

Surely His goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.

Ponder anew, What the Almighty can do

As with His love He befriends you.

C:  Amen.

Opening Sentences

P. The LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,

C. and the man became a living creature.

P. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones:

C. Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.

P. And when [Jesus] had said this, He breathed on them and said to them,

C. “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

P. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.

Confession and Absolution

P. Confident of His grace and mercy, let us confess our sins to our heavenly Father.

C: Merciful Father, we confess that we have erred and wandered from Your ways like stray sheep. We have followed the desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your laws. We have left undone those things we ought to have done; we have done those things we ought not to have done; we cannot help ourselves. O Lord, have mercy on us. Breathe new life upon us; teach, reprove, correct, and restore us through Your Word that we may

live in praise of Your holy name.

P. In the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, all your sins were atoned for and your sinfulness forgiven. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen

First Reading

Nehemiah8:112

All the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

This is the Word of the Lord

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle –2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

As for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

 P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Luke 18:1-8

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eighteenth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

C:   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn- Pass it On

It only takes a spark

To get a fire going

And soon all those around

Can warm up in its glowing

That's how it is with God's love

Once you've experienced it

You spread His love to ev'ryone

You want to pass it on

What a wondrous time is spring

When all the trees are budding

The birds begin to sing

The flowers start their blooming

That's how it is with God's love

Once you've experienced it

You want to sing it's fresh like spring

You want to pass it on

Children’s Sermon – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day752 Be Still, My Soul

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side;

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

Leave to your God to order and provide;

In ev’ry change He faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul; your best, your heav’nly Friend

Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul; your God will undertake

To guide the future as He has the past.

Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;

 All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know

His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul; though dearest friends depart

And all is darkened in this vale of tears;

Then you will better know His love, His heart,

Who comes to soothe your sorrows and your fears.

Be still, my soul; your Jesus can repay

From His own fullness all He takes away.

Preface

P     The Lord be with you.

C     And also with you.

P     Lift up your hearts.

C     We lift them to the Lord.

P     Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C     It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P.    It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, by whose breath Adam became a living being, by whose Holy Spirit the disciples were emboldened, and by whose inspiration the Scriptures were written, making us wise to salvation in Christ Jesus, the Word in flesh. Therefore with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your holy name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P. Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You not only created us and bestowed on us the gift of faith but are ever near us to listen to our prayers and praises. Hear us now as we prepare to receive our Lord Jesus in, with, and under bread and wine. Forgive, renew, and strengthen us in faith, we pray, until faith is replaced with sight. Then gather us together with all the faithful that we may rejoice at the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn –642 O Living Bread from Heaven

O living Bread from heaven,

How well You feed your guest!

The gifts that You have given

Have filled my heart with rest.

Oh, wondrous food of blessing,

Oh, cup that heals our woes!

My heart, this gift possessing,

With praises overflows.

My Lord, You here have led me

To this most holy place

And with Yourself have fed me

The treasures of Your grace;

For You have freely given

What earth could never buy,

The bread of life from heaven,

That now I shall not die.

You gave me all I wanted;

This food can death destroy.

And You have freely granted

The cup of endless joy.

My Lord, I do not merit

The favor You have shown,

And all my soul and spirit

Bow down before Your throne.

Lord, grant me then, thus strengthened

With heav’nly food, while here

My course on earth is lengthened,

To serve with holy fear.

And when You call my spirit

To leave this world below,

I enter, through Your merit

 Where joys unmingled flow.

Post-Communion Collect

C: Strengthen us thereby and accompany us each day that we may meet whatever the future holds with the sure and certain hope of one day joining all Your saints in glory;

P: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C. Amen.

C:  Amen.

People:          Thanks be to God!

Closing Hymn – Sent Forth by God’s Blessing

Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,

the people of God from this dwelling take leave.

The supper is ended.

Oh, now be extended the fruits of this service in all who believe.

The seed of Christ’s teaching,

receptive souls reaching,

shall blossom in action for God and for all.

Your grace shall incite us, your love shall unite us

to work for your kingdom and answer your call.

With praise and thanksgiving to God ever-living,

the tasks of our ev’ryday life we will face—

our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,

embracing God’s children, the whole human race.

With your feast you feed us, with your light now lead us;

unite us as one in this life that we share.

Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving

give honor to Christ and his name that we bear.

From: Pastor Scott

Last weekend was such a good time. On Saturday night we had more people in worship than ever. Then we had one hundred attend Oktoberfest. Sandy’s team decorated so festively. Tony’s team made plenty of Brats. The church brought lots of yummy food. God brought new people and longtime members together for conversation and laughter. There was a feeling of love and community.

Then on Sunday we had Christ Community Lutheran School Sunday. Pastor Matt Hoehner preached on the school theme verse  "All In." Janet Leet led the Children’s Message and we prayed a prayer of thanks for her long ministry. Bishop Charles Bameka and his colleagues from Uganda spent their last day in America with us. We had seven of our Glendale staff here along with board members and others. Then Matt shared more with us in Bible class. God is good and active amongst us.

We have a lot to be thankful for at our church. It is a blessing to be a part of it.

Vision Event:

Please join us for some food and fellowship as Lutheran Church Extension Fund pastors lead us to discuss the surveys.

Sunday 10/23, after service. Lunch provided for all.

Voter's Meeting:

A Voters’ Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 30, 2022, immediately following service. Our primary agenda item will be to elect Leadership Council Members and Elders. Derek Don and Mike Murphy have been nominated to serve three-year terms on the Leadership Council. Mike Toney and John Steele have been nominated to serve three-year terms as Elders. We will also provide an update on playground construction and may have other agenda items we will include in future announcements.

All In - article by Joel Hempel

As we heard this past Sunday, All In is the CCLS theme for the year. Preaching at GLC was the Rev. Dr. Matthew Hoehner, Executive Director of CCLS. My takeaway included: We are all in a mess of trouble due to our sinful nature, and the only way out of it is through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who was all in to saving us by way of his death and resurrection. “Now,

Jesus continues to be all in for us.” Absolutely, Jesus is “all in for us.” But, I would like emphasize that message with a slight change of emphasis: Jesus is also all in us! Why is that important? I’ll answer that questions with

another question. What is the difference between in and out? Recently, I went grocery shopping at Schnucks. When I walked into the store, the bright colors and fragrances of the wonderful variety of fruits and vegetables were stunning! But all of that beauty and health is meaningless until I consume some of it and let it have its way with me.

Indeed, Jesus is for us and promises to be with us always “to the very end” (Matt. 28:29). Scripture is also clear that Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit permanently have taken up residence in us. As you have time, please look up the following passages: Rom. 8:9-10; Gal. 2:20; 1 Cor. 3:16; Rom. 5:5).

The Spirit of Christ Jesus being all in us is HUGE! It means where we go he goes. The problems we face he faces. The sins we commit, he closely observes (I’m not too happy about this one.). The big questions to which we need answers, he seeks with us. The sorrows and struggles that drag us down, he feels with us. The solutions to challenges we absolutely need, he cries out with

us to the Father.

Do you want a closer walk with Jesus? Do you want a friend with whom you can confide at any time of the day or night? You already have him! He will never leave you or forsake you because his Spirit is for you, with you, and in you. So, the more we seek to intimately know Jesus, the more he is able to reveal himself to us.

Operation Christmas Child... by Carol Froesel

Its time again to fill those shoe boxes that Samaritan Purse sends around the world to spread the Gospel and light up the eyes and hearts of underprivileged children.

Please begin to gather goodies to pack in them. There are lists of suggestions available on the "Christmas Child" table in the Fellowship room.

Last year our boxes travelled to Rawanda, Africa. Isn't it always exciting to see how far a little love can reach!

Any questions call: Carol Froesel 314-822-1365

Blessings on all our efforts.
