Does God Care About the Details? - article by Joel Hempel

The other day, Marcia and I were not getting along. Like many of our disagreements, it started with me being insensitive – I know, it’s hard to believe. Although I apologized, tension remained in the air. I suggested we go to the Botanical Garden for a walk. She agreed.

As all of you who live in St. Louis know, the Garden is a beautiful and inviting gift to the city. And because it was a Saturday and 78 sunny degrees with a cool breeze, it seemed like everyone had the same idea.

Turning off of the Highway, I saw it. The overflow lot was packed, and the street leading to the Garden, a half mile away, was lined with cars.

Now, I rarely pray for a parking space, but I knew how important this walk was for us. Making a left onto Shaw Avenue, the prayer barely left my lips when a family started getting into their car. I stopped, not even thinking God would answer a prayer that fast. But the family was taking a long time, and the cars behind us lined up.

Let’s go! I said. I don’t want to hold up traffic.

Driving further down the street, to the surprise of this Doubting Thomas, the second space from the entrance to the Garden was open.

Thank you, Jesus!

Is that kind of attentiveness from God even possible? After all, at that very moment, God was hearing from millions of people around the world in need of intervention for various life crises. But then, this is the Almighty, the Omnipresent God we’re talking about, the Creator of all that is yet to be discovered.

Does God care about our personal details? Consider this: Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. (Matt 10:29-31 NIV).

Yes, God cares! We know that for those who love God, ALL THINGS work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28, emphasis added).

You and I and all who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior enjoy the grace-filled privilege of being God’s adopted children. (1 John 3:1-2; John 1:12 and Romans 8:15).

Our Father absolutely cares!

Should we expect God to give us all green lights through life? Of course not, because not every detail in every moment is equal in God’s design. But neither should we be surprised when God prepares and plans for our well-being when it is in sync with his will.

Indeed, thank you, Jesus!

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Lift Every Voice and Sing (LSB 964)

Lift ev’ry voice and sing till earth and heaven ring,

Ring with the harmonies of liberty.

Let our rejoicing rise high as the list’ning skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chast’ning rod

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet

Come to the place for which our parents sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered;

We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,

Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;

Thou who hast by Thy might led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee;

Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;

Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,

True to our God, true to our native land.

C: Amen.

Confession and AbsolutionPsalm 51:2, 7, 10-12

P: Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

C: We confess, O Lord, that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.

P: Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

C: Our own attempts at change will leave the stain of our previous sins.

P: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

C: Lord our God, You are our only hope. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we follow Your guidance alone.

P: Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

C: We come to You, confident of Your mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

P: In the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

First ReadingDeuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–9

“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.

You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you...

Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?

And what great nation is there, that has statutes and just decrees so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children…

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 4:13-25

The promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Mark 7:14–23

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Lord, Be Glorified (AGPS 165)

In my life Lord,

Be glorified, be glorified.

In my life Lord,

Be glorified today.

In my song Lord,

Be glorified, be glorified.

In my song Lord,

Be glorified today.

In Your church Lord,

Be glorified, be glorified.

In Your church Lord,

Be glorified today.

Children’s Sermon – Pastor Scott

Hymn of the Day – By Grace I’m Saved (LSB 566)

By grace I’m saved, grace free and boundless;

My soul, believe and doubt it not.

Why stagger at this word of promise?

Has Scripture ever falsehood taught?

No! Then this word must true remain:

By grace you too will life obtain.

By grace! None dare lay claim to merit;

Our works and conduct have no worth.

God in His love sent our Redeemer,

Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth;

His death did for our sins atone,

And we are saved by grace alone.

By grace God’s Son, our only Savior,

Came down to earth to bear our sin.

Was it because of your own merit

That Jesus died your soul to win?

No, it was grace, and grace alone,

That brought Him from His heav’nly throne.

By grace! This ground of faith is certain;

As long as God is true, it stands.

What saints have penned by inspiration,

What in His Word our God commands,

Our faith in what our God has done

Depends on grace—grace through His Son.

By grace to timid hearts that tremble,

In tribulation’s furnace tried,

By grace, in spite of fear and trouble,

The Father’s heart is open wide.

Where could I help and strength secure

If grace were not my anchor sure?

By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying;

In Jesus’ promise I rejoice;

For though I know my heart’s condition,

I also know my Savior’s voice.

My heart is glad, all grief has flown

Since I am saved by grace alone.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whose death our sins have been paid and by whose resurrection we have been created again as Your dearly loved children. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes

in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have given us Your only-begotten Son. With joy we received the salvation accomplished for us by His cross-borne sacrifice on our behalf. By His death He paid for all our sins, and by His rising has assured us of a place with You for eternity. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood according to His own testament. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Lord Jesus Christ, We Humbly Pray (LSB 623)

Lord Jesus Christ, we humbly pray

That we may feast on You today;

Beneath these forms of bread and wine

Enrich us with Your grace divine.

Give us, who share this wondrous food,

Your body broken and Your blood,

The grateful peace of sins forgiv’n,

The certain joys of heirs of heav’n.

By faith Your Word has made us bold

To seize the gift of love retold;

All that You are we here receive,

And all we are to You we give.

One bread, one cup, one body, we,

Rejoicing in our unity,

Proclaim Your love until You come

To bring Your scattered loved ones home.

Lord Jesus Christ, we humbly pray:

O keep us steadfast till that day

When each will be Your welcomed guest

In heaven’s high and holy feast.

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. For all the gifts that flow from this Sacrament, we give You thanks, gracious God. Grant us humble faith so that our thoughts, words, and deeds reflect the mercy You have shown us this day. We pray in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Go, My Children, with My Blessing (LSB 922)

Go, My children, with My blessing, never alone.

Waking, sleeping, I am with you; You are My own.

In My love’s baptismal river

I have made you Mine forever.

Go, My children, with My blessing—You are My own.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure.

Here you heard My dear Son’s story;

Here you touched Him, saw His glory.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

Go, My children, fed and nourished, closer to Me;

Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free.

Here My Spirit’s power filled you;

Here His tender comfort stilled you.

Go, My children, fed and nourished, joyful and free.

I the Lord will bless and keep you and give you peace;

I the Lord will smile upon you and give you peace:

I the Lord will be your Father,

Savior, Comforter, and Brother.

Go, My children; I will keep you and give you peace.
