Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
December 9, 2021
As you know, we’ve started a relationship with Christian Friends of New Americans. We gave them over $20,000 from bequest money and member donations. They have used some of that money to hire a volunteer coordinator. This week I met her. She is Christy Hoehner of Concordia Lutheran.

Glendale Lutheran is recruiting 5-8 members to become a community support group for an Afghan household. We will be helping this family with English, homemaking, budget, St. Louis and building a resume. We will be trained be both the International Institute, a governmental agency, and CFNA. Then we will share the responsibilities for 3-6 months as we help this immigrant family assimilate. So far, Karli Auble, Jeanne Clark, Andrea Anderson, Josh Boehme and myself have volunteered. We have room for more. Pray about this opportunity. Call me or email me if you have questions.

Mary and Joseph relied on the kindness of others in the story of Christmas. This is our time to be kind and generous to immigrants who are in need. Let’s show them the love of Jesus.

Missionary David Baker Family Update

The family is now safely back in Mongolia having made the trip in record time – less than 24 hours. This trip has at times taken a day and a half with hours of layovers between flights.

As a reminder, at the last Voters’ meeting the voters authorized a gift of $10,000 to the Bakers from our bequest monies. This advanced our world mission area of emphasis from these generous member bequests.

$6,000 of the $10,000 was used to retire David’s personal expense to secure a permanent place of worship and fellowship for his Mongolian congregation. David was completely surprised by this unexpected gift and very thankful. David asked that the remaining $4000 be held until he could identify a specific need for his Mongolian ministry.

This need has now been identified. His Mongolian partner in ministry, Pastor Azamat, has been using a well-used van to take the Gospel to the scattered settlements of the Kazakhs across Mongolia. Repairs to this older van had become an immense liability. David has asked us to allocate the remaining $4000 to help secure a new vehicle. This amount will be combined with other gifts that were already planned to fund a new vehicle but had come up short due to raising costs. Yes, costs are rising in Mongolia just as we have experienced here. To quote David in an email to us, “This vehicle will be a true blessing to Azamat and the ministry to the unreached Kazakhs scattered across Mongolia.” To God be the glory.

The Shame of It All

Did you ever do something you considered dumb – or worse yet, others considered dumb? Too often, I feel like I specialize in it.

I just wrote something, and three minutes after I sent it, I thought, "Why did you do that? It didn't make sense?" I didn't intend to write something "dumb," of course. It's just that if I am not careful and think through and double-check what I am emailing, I can write something for which I later regret or have to apologize.

I also need to confess that I get irritated with myself when I forget something that needs to be remembered, or when I am not responsive and caring, or worst of all, when I let unkind words come out of my mouth!

Why am I confessing all of this to you? Because shame is crippling, and I don't want to be unnecessarily disabled. Nor is it healthy for any of us to be so ashamed of past sins, mistakes, and failures that we feel a need to hide.

Thank God for St Paul and his public confession of sins in Romans 7: 15 – 25, “I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” Please note, this confession of ongoing sinful behavior occurs after his conversion, after becoming the superhero of a Christian he was.

“Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” St. Paul then tells us how he can live with himself and, more than live, how he can thrive as a faithful servant of Christ: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

I know you can empathize. Your struggle may have a different identity than mine, but I know you are familiar with shame. I know it can make you say horrible things to yourself, and it can lead you to do something foolish – like quit or get stuck in depression or make some regrettable choice or…

God help us! God does help us. And God provides help for us. Ask for it. Expect to receive it. Don’t let shame have its way with you. Our Lord’s grace is sufficient to lead us to the healing needed.

Seminary Families Tree - Gifts due by December 12

Our Seminary Families Tree in the back of church is decorated with ornaments with the names of the children of seminarians, the moms and dads, and the families. Please select an ornament, if you wish to participate, and purchase a gift for the child, adult or family whose name is on the ornament. Wrap the gift and place it under the tree with their name and your name and address on it by Sunday, December 12. The gifts will be delivered to the families that week. The seminary families really appreciate our thoughtfulness and generosity in making this Christmas extra special for the families. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Skouby.

The Third Sunday in Advent
9:15am
Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles – Light One Candle (AGPS 163)

Light one candle for hope, one bright candle for hope,
He brings hope to ev’ry heart, He comes! He comes!

Light one candle for peace, one bright candle of peace,
He brings peace to ev’ry heart, He comes, He comes!

Light one candle for joy, one bright candle for joy,
Ev’ry nation will find salvation in Bethl’em’s baby boy.

Light one candle for love, one bright candle for love,
He brings love to ev’ry heart, He comes, He comes!

Hymn of Invocation – Once He Came in Blessing (LSB 333)

Once He came in blessing,
All our sins redressing;
Came in likeness lowly,
Son of God most holy;
Bore the cross to save us;
Hope and freedom gave us.

Now He gently leads us;
With Himself He feeds us
Precious food from heaven,
Pledge of peace here given,
Manna that will nourish
Souls that they may flourish.

Soon will come that hour
When with mighty power
Christ will come in splendor
And will judgment render,
With the faithful sharing
Joy beyond comparing.

Come, then, O Lord Jesus,
From our sins release us.
Keep our hearts believing,
That we, grace receiving,
Ever may confess You
Till in heav’n we bless You.

C:  The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil.
P:  “Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands grow weak.
C:  The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save;
P:  He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love;
C:  He will exult over you with loud singing.
P:  I will bring you in, at the time when I gather you together; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes,” says the Lord.
C:  We worship You, O Lord!

Confession and Absolution - Psalm 25:6–7
P:  Having emerged from the waters of Baptism as God’s new creation in Christ, we confess our sins to God and one another.

A time of silence is observed.

P:  We confess to You, O Lord, that we are captive to sin in thought, word, and deed. We have wandered from You. Our wonderings have at times turned into doubts that drew us away from You.
C:  Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love, for they have been from of old.
P:  Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
C:  according to Your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of Your goodness, O Lord!

First Reading – Amos 3: 1-11
Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
“You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.
“Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet? Does a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out from his den, if he has taken nothing? Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth, when there is no trap for it? Does a snare spring up from the ground, when it has taken nothing? Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city, unless the Lord has done it?
“For the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy?”
Proclaim to the strongholds in Ashdod and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt, and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and see the great tumults within her, and the oppressed in her midst.”
“They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord, “those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”
Therefore thus says the Lord God: “An adversary shall surround the land and bring down your defenses from you, and your strongholds shall be plundered.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Philippians 4:4–7
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Luke 7:18-28
P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventh chapter.
C:  Glory to You, O Lord.
The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed
C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Preface
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Lift up your hearts.
C:  We lift them to the Lord.
P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praiseimH.
P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who alone fills our hearts with joy both in good times and bad times. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of pow’r and might:
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ
P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini
P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – What Is This Bread? (LSB 629)

What is this bread?
Christ’s body risen from the dead:
This bread we break, this life we take,
Was crushed to pay for our release.
O taste and see—the Lord is peace.

What is this wine?
The blood of Jesus shed for mine;
The cup of grace brings His embrace
Of life and love until I sing!
O taste and see—the Lord is King.

So who am I,
That I should live and He should die
Under the rod? My God, my God,
Why have You not forsaken me?
O taste and see—the Lord is free.

Yet is God here?
Oh, yes! By Word and promise clear,
In mouth and soul He makes us whole—
Christ, truly present in this meal.
O taste and see—the Lord is real.

Is this for me?
I am forgiven and set free!
I do believe that I receive
His very body and His blood.
O taste and see—the Lord is good.

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect
P:  Let us pray. We rejoice, O Lord, and thank You that in Christ’s body and blood we now receive forgiveness of our sins, life rooted in Christ, and salvation both now and forever; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

Benediction
P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates (LSB 341)

Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates!
Behold, the King of glory waits.
The King of kings is drawing near;
The Savior of the world is here.
Life and salvation He doth bring;
Therefore rejoice and gladly sing.
To God the Father raise
Your joyful songs of praise.

A righteous Helper comes to thee;
His chariot is humility,
His kingly crown is holiness,
His scepter, pity in distress.
The end of all our woe He brings;
Therefore the earth is glad and sings.
To Christ the Savior raise
Your grateful hymns of praise.

How blest the land, the city blest,
Where Christ the ruler is confessed!
O peaceful hearts and happy homes
To whom this King in triumph comes!
The cloudless sun of joy is He
Who comes to set His people free.
To God the Spirit raise
Your happy shouts of praise.

Fling wide the portals of your heart;
Make it a temple set apart
From earthly use for heav’n’s employ,
Adorned with prayer and love and joy.
So shall your Sov’reign enter in
And new and nobler life begin.
To God alone be praise
For word and deed and grace!

Redeemer, come and open wide
My heart to Thee; here, Lord, abide!
O enter with Thy grace divine;
Thy face of mercy on me shine.
Thy Holy Spirit guide us on
Until our glorious goal is won.
Eternal praise and fame
We offer to Thy name.
