Masterpiece - article by Joel Hempel

Who’s your favorite artist? Rembrandt? Monet? Michelangelo? I’m partial to my granddaughter Kiyah and our resident artists at GLC: Norma Bentzinger, Carol Froesel, Lisa Grossenheider, Valerie Wehmueller, and probably others I don’t know about. The other day, I told Carol and Norma I thought our artists should have an exhibition at church. I think it would be fun!

But my all-time favorite artist is, of course, God because the Creator created you!

We are God’s workmanship [His masterpiece] created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).

I know you might look in the mirror or reflect on your limitations and think God may have let some rookie angel make you while He was out dealing with more important matters. You and I might think that, but we would be wrong.

Living in a fallen world where bodies and minds slowly deteriorate can lead a person to believe nothing is incredible about us. But look again and see what God sees: If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone; the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV).

And then there is this:

You formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14).

Christian: Yes, but God, have you taken a good look at me recently? I don’t look all that wonderful, and I know my inward parts; they’re not that pretty.

God: Here’s the problem with you feeling that way. It can get in the way of claiming the unique person I have created you to be and the special calling only you can handle for me. I didn’t just create you so you can coast into heaven. I have a plan for you. There are things I want you to accomplish in my name and for the well-being of others. I have loved you into being! Yes, I know you have brokenness in your life. Yes, I can see you are struggling with sin. I also see a person of beauty – my creation, my son, my daughter. You can trust my grace.

So, go ahead, look at yourself in the mirror, but look past the physical. Look and see your inner being. See your mind. Is it being transformed by the love of God and his unique desire for you (Romans 12:2)? Take a good look at your heart. Is it passionate about Jesus (Mark 12:30)? Pay attention to your will. Is it ready to be molded into the image God has of you (Matthew 6:10)?

If your answer is anything other than a resounding yes to the above questions, then you know what your prayer needs to be. Pray to have the eyes of God to see what he sees in you, to see your potential – whatever your age or circumstances.

Pray for the courage he wants to give to you.

Greeting and Welcome

Hymn of Invocation – Voices Raised to You We Offer (LSB 795, verses 1, 5)

Voices raised to You we offer;

Tune them, God, for songs of praise.

Hearts and hands we bring in tribute

For Your gifts through all our days.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Triune God, to You we sing!

How can any praise we offer

Measure all the thanks we owe?

Take our hearts and hands and voices—

Gifts of love we can bestow.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Triune God, to You we sing!

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Opening Sentences - Psalm 124:8; 130:3–5

P: Our help is in the name of the LORD,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities,

C: O Lord, who could stand?

P: But with You there is forgiveness,

C: that You may be feared.

P: I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,

C: and in His word I hope.

Confession and Absolution

C: O God, I confess to You that I have sinned against You in my thoughts, words, and deeds by my own fault. For the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, forgive me my sins and restore to me the hope of Your eternal salvation.

P: God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith. I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Almighty God, You sent Your own beloved Son into our flesh to free us from the guilt and death of our sin. As He is risen from death and lives and reigns in victory, so raise us anew this day and always to the certain hope of eternal life in His name; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading Genesis 3:8–15

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 2 Corinthians 4:13—5:1

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. For we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMark 3:20-25, 31-35

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the third chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Then [Jesus] went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”

And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”

And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Jesus Loves Me (LSB 588)

Jesus loves me! This I know,

For the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong;

They are weak, but He is strong. Refrain

Refrain: Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died

Heaven’s gates to open wide.

He has washed away my sin,

Lets His little child come in. Refrain

Children’s Sermon – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – Love in Christ is Strong and Living (LSB 706)

Love in Christ is strong and living,

Binding faithful hearts in one;

Love in Christ is true and giving.

May His will in us be done.

Love is patient and forbearing,

Clothed in Christ’s humility,

Gentle, selfless, kind, and caring,

Reaching out in charity.

Love in Christ abides forever,

Fainting not when ills attend;

Love, forgiving and forgiven,

Shall endure until life’s end.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, hosanna.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes

in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – What Is This Bread (LSB 629)

What is this bread?

Christ’s body risen from the dead:

This bread we break, this life we take,

Was crushed to pay for our release.

O taste and see—the Lord is peace.

What is this wine?

The blood of Jesus shed for mine;

The cup of grace brings His embrace

Of life and love until I sing!

O taste and see—the Lord is King.

So who am I,

That I should live and He should die

Under the rod? My God, my God,

Why have You not forsaken me?

O taste and see—the Lord is free.

Yet is God here?

Oh, yes! By Word and promise clear,

In mouth and soul He makes us whole—

Christ, truly present in this meal.

O taste and see—the Lord is real.

Is this for me?

I am forgiven and set free!

I do believe that I receive

His very body and His blood.

O taste and see—the Lord is good.

Blessing

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Go, My Children, with My Blessing (LSB 922)

Go, My children, with My blessing,

Never alone.

Waking, sleeping, I am with you;

You are My own.

In My love’s baptismal river

I have made you Mine forever.

Go, My children, with My blessing—

You are My own.

Go, My children, sins forgiven,

At peace and pure.

Here you learned how much I love you,

What I can cure.

Here you heard My dear Son’s story;

Here you touched Him, saw His glory.

Go, My children, sins forgiven,

At peace and pure.

Go, My children, fed and nourished,

Closer to Me;

Grow in love and love by serving,

Joyful and free.

Here My Spirit’s power filled you;

Here His tender comfort stilled you.

Go, My children, fed and nourished,

Joyful and free.

I the Lord will bless and keep you

And give you peace;

I the Lord will smile upon you

And give you peace:

I the Lord will be your Father,

Savior, Comforter, and Brother.

Go, My children; I will keep you

And give you peace.
