Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter

November 3, 2022

On Sunday, we celebrate All Saints' Day. We thank God for all saints both living and dead. A saint is any believer. Over the last year we’ve had the following members of Glendale Lutheran Church die: Anne Hamman, Fred Aufderheide, Dan Eads, and Ruth Wussler.

When we are in the sanctuary, we can look around the room and thank God for those we see. The council and elders are getting installed at the beginning of the service. We are blessed to have those women and men serve us that way. Also in the room are those who give us words of encouragement, those who pray for us, and those who give us an example of faithful living. It reminds us how important it is to be present with one another for word and sacrament.

We also remember those who we do not see: the dearly departed. During the service there will be a time in which you can come forward and say the name of a saint who has died. We trust that Jesus is taking care of them. It’s a mystery as to what happens between death and the new heaven and earth. But we believe that Jesus is in control. He is making everything right. I thank God that you are at Glendale Lutheran Church and that we can be saints together.

Daily Bible Reading

Thank you!

I can't fully express how deeply I appreciated the cards, meals, desserts, gifts, and prayers from everyone the past six weeks! It was a treat to check the mail every day, and so nice not to have to worry about cooking during my recovery. I felt absolutely enveloped by all the love and care you sent my way. Special thanks also to Ann Jonas for filling in while I was out. Thank you, everyone!

Operation Christmas Child

Its time again to fill those shoe boxes that Samaritan Purse sends around the world to spread the Gospel and light up the eyes and hearts of underprivileged children. Please begin to gather goodies to pack in them. There are lists of suggestions available on the "Christmas Child" table in the Fellowship room.

Last year our boxes travelled to Rawanda, Africa. Isn't it always exciting to see how far a little love can reach! Any questions call Carol Froesel at 314-822-1365. Blessings on all our efforts!

Growing Together in Faith - article by Joel Hempel

From our perch in the choir loft, we have had a vantage point not all of you are privileged to have. Especially we get to see the littlest ones of the congregation and the gentle, attentive parenting and grandparenting the children receive. This past Sunday was no exception.

With couple of our young families sitting in the last two pews with the children seemingly enjoying being in church, Marcia leaned over and whispered: “It would be wonderful if these little ones could grow up together in their faith.” I quickly jotted down her words.

God only knows if these children and their parents will grow up together at GLC, being a support and encouragement to each other. That's how it was in my home church in Canton, Ohio, where I grew up. A bunch of kids at Our Savior Lutheran played together, learned together, got into trouble together, and, yes, grew up together. Following high school, we all went our different directions. But those early years were a blessing to us. However, not until now – in the winter season of my life – have I realized how important we children were to grown-ups back then. Surrogate grandmas love holding the littlest ones. Proxy grandpas are delighted to watch the playfulness of children and any shenanigans we can support.

Yes, growing up together – especially growing up together in the faith – is a blessing to cherish. But growing old together in the faith is also a blessing I've come to appreciate.

In Ephesians chapter four, Paul introduces the metaphor of a human body and compares it to the church, with all the different parts having different functions as they rely on each other and recognize their equal value. Paul then addresses our diverse vocations based on our various gifts and notes how we all need to continue growing up in Christ – whatever our age (also see Romans 4:18-22; Psalm 92:12-14).

Indeed, we are blessed at Glendale Lutheran Church as we grow together as a body of believers, as we continue to grow up in our faith, and as we grow in our appreciation for each other and the good we individually contribute to the whole of us.

Of course, a body can’t grow without outside stimulation and nutrition. Similarly, our Body of Christ at Glendale Lutheran can only grow as we open ourselves up to others who seek to grow in Gospel assurance and the Gospel’s guidance for life.

Hymn of Invocation – For All the Saints (LSB 677, verses 1-4 )

For all the saints who from their labors rest,

Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,

Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;

Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;

Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, may Thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,

Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old

And win with them the victor’s crown of gold!

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine!

We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;

Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit

C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P:  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C:  But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P:  Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C:  Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P:  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Introit

P:  These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

C:  In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me.

P:  For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me.

C:  Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Kyrie

P:  In peace let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P:  For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P:  For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P:  For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P:  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C: Amen.

This Is the Feast

This is the feast of victory for our God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain,

whose blood set us free to be people of God.

This is the feast of victory for our God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Power, riches, wisdom and strength,

and honor, blessing, and glory are His.

This is the feast of victory for our God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Sing with all the people of God,

and join in the hymn of all creation.

Blessing, honor, glory, and might

be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen.

This is the feast of victory for our God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia.

This is the feast of victory for our God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P:  Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, You knit together Your faithful people of all times and places into one holy communion, the mystical body of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant us so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that, together with them, we may come to the unspeakable joys You have prepared for those who love You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading – Revelation 7:9-17

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12

Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life.

Alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 5:1-12

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Seeing the crowds, [Jesus] went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Do Lord!: Psalm 27 (AGPS 89)

Refrain:  Do Lord, oh, do Lord, oh, do remember me!

              Do Lord, oh, do Lord, oh, do remember me!

              Do Lord, oh, do Lord, oh, do remember me!

              Look away beyond the blue!

You’re my light and my salvation, I won’t be afraid!

You’re the stronghold of my life, by You all things were made.

Foes attack me, hassle me, but I will never fade,

For I move in the strength of the Lord. Refrain

Children’s Sermon – Janet Leet

Hymn of the Day – All Who Believe and Are Baptized (LSB 601)

All who believe and are baptized

Shall see the Lord’s salvation;

Baptized into the death of Christ,

They are a new creation.

Through Christ’s redemption they shall stand

Among the glorious, heav’nly band

Of ev’ry tribe and nation.

With one accord, O God, we pray:

Grant us Your Holy Spirit.

Help us in our infirmity

Through Jesus’ blood and merit.

Grant us to grow in grace each day

That by this sacrament we may

Eternal life inherit.

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. In the communion of all Your saints gathered into the one body of Your Son, You have surrounded us with so great a cloud of witnesses that we, encouraged by their faith and strengthened by their fellowship, may run with perseverance the race that is set before us and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

Grant us peace.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me (LSB 761)

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee;

Let the water and the blood,

From Thy riven side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure:

Cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r.

Not the labors of my hands

Can fulfill Thy Law’s demands;

Could my zeal no respite know,

Could my tears forever flow,

All for sin could not atone;

Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring;

Simply to Thy cross I cling.

Naked, come to Thee for dress;

Helpless, look to Thee for grace;

Foul, I to the fountain fly;

Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,

When mine eyelids close in death,

When I soar to worlds unknown,

See Thee on Thy judgment throne,

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in Thee.

Blessing

Thank the Lord

Thank the Lord and sing His praise;

Tell ev’ryone what He has done.

Let all who seek the Lord rejoice

And proudly bear His name.

He recalls His promises

And leads His people forth in joy

With shouts of thanksgiving.

Alleluia, alleluia.

Post-Communion Collect

P:  Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – For All the Saints (LSB 677, verses 5-8)

And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long,

Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,

And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west;

Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest;

Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day:

The saints triumphant rise in bright array;

The King of Glory passes on His way.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,

Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:

Alleluia! Alleluia!
