Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter

September 1, 2022

CCLS has begun their school year! Glendale Lutheran gets way too quiet during the summer so it’s wonderful to hear teachers sing to their kiddos, kiddos yelling, “Pastor Scott!”, and parents saying “I love you!” as they say good bye to their children. We have over 80 children here, taught by over 25 staff.

Beth Kiessling is our campus manager again. She’s a member at Concordia and a called, Lutheran trained teacher who is fabulous with her 4 years olds. Our other teachers are Stephanie and Kelly(Babies), Kelsey and Ally (1s), Haley (2s), and Tina (3s). I go into the classrooms to say “Hi” everyday but on Mondays I attend circle time and teach them about Jesus. On Wednesdays is Chapel where they get excited about lighting the candles, saying Bible verses and hearing Jesus stories.

We have two representatives on the CCLS board along with myself. Johanna Sowers, mom to Addie and Thomas, is a middle school teacher in Clayton. This is her second year. The other is Laurel Don, mom to Silas, who is a Physical therapist at Missouri Baptist. They, along with members from Concordia, Webster Gardens and Prince of Peace, make sure the school is sticking to their goals, policies, and objectives. I’d like to thank Candace Lane, mom to Hunter and Savannah, whose term ended this summer. She was a blessing to the board. It is a delight to serve God’s children here at Glendale Lutheran Church!

Get to or Got To? - article by Joel Hempel

Many years ago in Cincinnati, I had a pastor in chaplaincy training who came to class disheveled and looking like he had just gotten out of bed. His collar was upturned, his tie catawampus, and his hair uncombed. Needless to say, we talked about his appearance. What I discovered is that he did not intend to come to class this way and certainly did not want to be a stumbling block to people receiving the Gospel. He told me he would look in the mirror when he got up and intended to comb his hair and shave. But he would then get busy with chores or finishing homework and then have to hurry to make it to class on time.

This chaplain-in-training was a real-life example of what James wrote about in chapter 1:22-25. Knowing what we should do and doing it are two very different things. More importantly, knowing what we should do compared to understanding what we get to do is even more significant.

In the middle of Jonathan Chapa’s message, he stated, “we face the commands of God as things we get to do because of who he has made us as new creatures in Christ.” That little phrase, “we get to do," is insightful and far more noteworthy than one might initially think.

What in you needs to change? What is pulling you away from wanting to be faithful to Jesus? Which command or law do you find yourself stumbling over in God's Word? Becoming the man or woman God has called us to be is not within our power. Living the Word of God and increasingly following the Way of Jesus is by God's grace and the help of the Holy Spirit.

Parents raise their children and seek to instill in them values and beliefs that will guide their behavior when the parents aren’t around. I chew my food with my mouth closed and wash my hands before I eat because my mom taught me to do so. I now practice good manners, not because I'm afraid of parental judgment. Rather, I act like a grown-up (most of the time) because that is who I am – thanks in large part to the love and careful parenting of my mom and dad.

The last thing God wants for us is to labor under the burden of his Law. He does not want us to obey his commands because we have to. Instead, he places within us his very presence along with his living Word so that we will live the Christian life because we “get to,” because we want to. Why? Because it’s who we are. We have been born again – made new – by the power of Christ’s love and faith in Jesus as our Savior and Lord.

C:  Amen.

Opening Sentences - Psalm 124:8; Isaiah 2:3, 5

P:  Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C:  who made heaven and earth.

P:  Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord,

C:  that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths.

Confession and AbsolutionDeuteronomy 30:14

P:  Since God graciously calls all people to come to Him to receive His love and life through repentance of sin and faith in His gift of forgiveness, let us confess our sin, take refuge in His mercy, and seek His grace for the sake of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C:  Most merciful God, we come before You at Your gracious invitation. We repent of our sins in thought, word, and deed, both what we have done against Your Law and what we have failed to do in faithfulness to Your Law. We have not loved You with our whole being. We have failed to love our neighbors. We plead through the deliverance of Your Son’s suffering and death, forgive us our sins, and give us the will to choose life in His name. Amen.

P:  “The word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.” In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. You are free. Choose life!

C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P:  Make me understand the way of your precepts,

and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

C:  My soul melts away for sorrow;

and graciously teach me your law!

C:  I have chosen the way of faithfulness;

I set your just decrees before me.

P:  I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;

let me not be put to shame!

C:  I will run in the way of your commandments

        when you enlarge my heart!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  Make me understand the way of your precepts,

and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

C:  Amen.

First ReadingDeuteronomy 30:15–20

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his just decrees then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – James 2:14-26

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”— and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Luke 14:25-35

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fourteenth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Now great crowds accompanied [Jesus], and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

“Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – This Is My Commandment (AGPS 240)

This is my commandment,

That you love one another,

That your joy may be full

This is my commandment,

That you love one another,

That your joy may be full

That your joy may be full,

That your joy may be full,

This is my commandment

That you love one another

That your joy may be full.

Children’s Sermon – Pastor Scott

Hymn of the Day – Lord of All Hopefulness (LSB 738)

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:

Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,

Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:

Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace:

Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,

Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:

Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,

Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. For by His faithful fulfillment of Your Law on our behalf, He nevertheless died for us that we might receive Your gift of eternal life, being baptized into His death, and by a lively faith in His resurrection. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. With thankful hearts and in the power of Your Spirit we gladly choose life in Him especially now by receiving His own body and blood once shed for us on the cross. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord (LSB 637)

Draw near and take the body of the Lord,

And drink the holy blood for you outpoured;

Offered was He for greatest and for least,

Himself the victim and Himself the priest.

He who His saints in this world rules and shields,

To all believers life eternal yields;

With heav’nly bread He makes the hungry whole,

Gives living waters to the thirsting soul.

Come forward then with faithful hearts sincere,

And take the pledges of salvation here.

O Lord, our hearts with grateful thanks endow

As in this feast of love You bless us now.

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P:  Let us pray. O God, the author of all life, we praise and thank You that Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, chose death in our place. By the power of His resurrection, He has made us to be His own, imparting to us His holiness, righteousness, and love. Go with us to bear witness to Your gracious will and Your gift of life for the whole world; through our Lord of life, Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

Benediction

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – Lift High the Cross (LSB 837, verses 4-6)

Refrain:  Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim

Till all the world adore His sacred name.

O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,

As Thou hast promised, draw us all to Thee.  Refrain

Let ev’ry race and ev’ry language tell

Of Him who saves our lives from death and hell.  Refrain

So shall our song of triumph ever be:
