Loving Jesus When It's Hard - article by Joel Hempel

Recently, I was graciously challenged by a story I read in a book by Corry ten Boom entitled Tramp for the Lord. Many of us are going through tough times; the rest of us will eventually. When life presses on you and the pressure mounts up, it is difficult to think about our love for Jesus and what we can do for him.

Corry ten Boom, as you may know, was a holocaust survivor whose family protected and gave shelter to Jews in Holland until the entire family was arrested and imprisoned. Corry was the only survivor. She then lived the rest of her life telling her story and pointing others to Jesus who gave her the courage to live, forgive, and love again. But the story is not about her. It is about a woman Corry visited who had translated her books into Russian and other languages.

We were in Russia . . . I had climbed the steep stairs . . into the one-room apartment . . . The old woman was lying on a small sofa, propped up by pillows. Her body was bent and twisted almost beyond recognition by the dread disease of multiple sclerosis.

I walked across the room and kissed her wrinkled cheek. She tried to look up, but the muscles in her neck were atrophied so she could only roll her eyes upward and smile . . . I reached over and kissed her index finger. It was the only part of her body she could control, for it was with this one finger that she had so long glorified God.

Beside her couch was a vintage typewriter. Each morning, her faithful husband . . . would prop her into a sitting position on the couch . . . Then he would move that ancient black typewriter in front of her on a small table.

All day and far into the night, she would type. She translated Christian books into Russian, Latvian and the language of her people. Always using just that one finger – peck – peck – peck – peck – she typed out pages.

I looked at her wasted form on the sofa, her head pulled down, and her feet curled back under her body. “Oh, Lord, why don’t You heal her?” I cried inwardly

Her husband, sensing my anguish of soul, gave the answer. “God has a purpose in her sickness. Every other Christian in the city is watched by the secret police. But because she has been sick so long, no one ever looks in on her. They leave us alone and she is the only person in all the city who can type quietly undetected by the police.”*

When hard times strike, though it may feel like it, God does not quit caring about us, nor does he abandon his plan for our lives (see Romans 8:35-39; Jeremiah 29:11). It is not likely that God imposes suffering on us. Such pain comes from the evil one and our broken world. Thus, God will not let Satan or our challenges defeat us. But he needs our help; he needs us to let him continue to work his healing in our life; and he needs us to remain open to God leading us to the good work he has prepared for us (see Ephesians 2:10).

What incredible honor we bring to Jesus when we give from our brokenness (see Mark 12:41-44)!

Hymn of Invocation – Lift High the Name of Jesus

Lift high the name of Jesus,

Of Jesus our King.

Make known the power of His grace,

The beauty of His peace.

Remember how His mercy reached

And we cried out to Him.

He lifted us to solid ground,

To freedom from our sin.

Oh sing my soul, and tell all He's done,

Till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

Lift high the name of Jesus,

Of Jesus our Lord.

His power in us is greater than,

Is greater than this world.

To share the reason for our hope,

To serve with love and grace,

That all who see Him shine through us

Might bring the Father praise.

Oh sing my soul, and tell all He's done

Till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

Lift high the name of Jesus,

Of Jesus our Light.

No other name on earth can save,

Can raise a soul to life.

He opens up our eyes to see

The harvest He has grown.

We labor in His fields of grace

As He leads sinners home.

Oh sing my soul, and tell all He's done

Till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession and Absolution – Psalm 34:8-10

P: Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints;

C: those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

Silence for self-examination

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

C: I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God Almighty to have mercy on me, forgive me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and given to us His only Son to suffer and die for our salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: He who began this good work in you will bring it to completion on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace be with you.

C: And also with you.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow His steps in the way that leads to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading – Proverbs 9:1–10

Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says, “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.”

Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle – Romans 3:9-20

What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.”

“The venom of asps is under their lips.”

“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”

“Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.”,

“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – John 6:51-69

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – This Is the Day (AGPS 241)

This is the day, this is the day

That the Lord hath made,

That the Lord hath made.

I will rejoice, I will rejoice

And be glad in it,

And be glad in it.

This is the day that the Lord hath made,

We will rejoice and be glad in it.

This is the day, this is the day

That the Lord hath made.

(Repeat)

Hymn of the Day – Great Is Thy Faithfulness (LSB 809)

There is no shadow of turning with Thee.

Thou changest not: Thy compassions, they fail not;

As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be. Refrain

Refrain: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes

in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Holy and mighty, holy and merciful Lord, from the beginning You held forth the hope of redemption that the people lost to You because of sin might be returned to You by means of the Savior long promised. Now having fulfilled all things for our salvation by the offering of His flesh for the life of the world and His blood to atone for our sin, grant us Your Holy Spirit that we whom He has bidden may come in confidence to receive all that He has promised. Now, by His own bidding, we come in His name to His Supper, that we may be strengthened in body and soul upon the food of His flesh and blood.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution Hymn – The Lamb (LSB 547)

The Lamb, the Lamb,

O Father, where’s the sacrifice?

Faith sees, believes

God will provide the Lamb of price! Refrain

Refrain: Worthy is the Lamb whose death makes me His own!

The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

The Lamb, the Lamb,

One perfect final offering.

The Lamb, the Lamb,

Let earth join heav’n His praise to sing. Refrain

The Lamb, the Lamb,

As wayward sheep their shepherd kill

So still, His will

On our behalf the Law to fill. Refrain

He sighs, He dies,

He takes my sin and wretchedness.

He lives, forgives,

He gives me His own righteousness. Refrain

He rose, He rose,

My heart with thanks now overflows.

His song prolong

Till ev’ry heart to Him belong. Refrain

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, we thank and praise You for feeding us the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send us Your Holy Spirit that, having with our mouths received the Holy Sacrament, we may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me (LSB 722)

Lord, take my hand and lead me upon life’s way;

Direct, protect, and feed me from day to day.

Without Your grace and favor I go astray;

So take my hand, O Savior, and lead the way.

Lord, when the tempest rages, I need not fear,

For You, the Rock of Ages, are always near.

Close by Your side abiding, I fear no foe,

For when Your hand is guiding, in peace I go.

Lord, when the shadows lengthen and night has come,

I know that You will strengthen my steps toward home.

Then nothing can impede me, O blessèd Friend;

So take my hand and lead me unto the end.
