A Note from the Secretary

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the cards, phone calls, hugs, offers to help, and prayers. My surgery is scheduled for Friday, September 16, and I will be recovering at home until the beginning of November. Ann Jonas will be filling in for me in the afternoons (mornings are still in flux due to how fast this all happened!)

I have kept all your cards and notes and will be looking at them again in the days to come to remind myself of everyone's care and concern. Thank you again!

Vision Survey

This coming Sunday, September 18, will mark the start of our congregation’s

program to identify a Vision for our Ministries that will serve to lead our efforts in the years to come. The first step in this process will be the distribution of a Survey which is designed to capture your personal opinions as to where we are presently and where we would like to be in the future in the service of our Lord. The Survey will pose seven questions and should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.

The forms will be available at the conclusion of the Service and eventually will

also be placed on line. Please let us know if you do not plan or will be unable to

be in attendance at one of the two next Sundays and we will be sure to send a

form to your home. We are targeting for completion of this step by October 2.

Our ultimate goal is to have 100+ members respond to this survey so that we

have a strong base of information as we move forward in this process. All

responses will be kept confidential and will only be shared with the Lutheran

Church Extension Fund which is acting as overall coordinator.

Thank you for your assistance, GLC Vision Committee

Oktoberfest

Please join us for some fun and fellowship at the Glendale Lutheran Oktoberfest on the patio of the church. Event takes place Saturday October 8 at 6:00p.m. There will be music, games for kids, beer tastings from Gefahrliches Ding Brewery (Tony Petzoldt) and famous Petzoldt brats. Please bring a side dish to share with the group and preferred other beverages.

Always brings out a fun crowd. This is a great event. Come celebrate Oktoberfest at Glendale. See you there!!

Who Do People Say You Are? - article by Joel Hempel

Once Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” As you might remember, Peter gave an answer only the Holy Spirit could have inspired: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Matt 16:16). A similar question could be asked of each one of us and of Glendale Lutheran Church as a congregation. Who do people say we are?

Marcia’s stepfather was the kindest and most generous man I have ever known. I remember one Thanksgiving at her parents’ home; the phone rang as we sat down for the holiday dinner. Dad Laesch – who owned a processing dairy in Central Illinois – answered the phone. It was a disgruntled customer who had asked to have a half-gallon of butter pecan ice cream delivered for their Thanksgiving dessert, and what was delivered was a half-gallon of vanilla ice cream. I overheard dad apologize and then add, “I’ll be right over with your ice cream.” He then excused himself, went to the dairy, took four half-gallons of ice cream out of the freezer – including butter pecan, and drove them over to the customer.

This act of kindness and generosity was not an “act.” He honestly did not know how to act kind or generous. He just was! It was his nature to care about people and to serve them faithfully.

In the vision process we are now entering, as we seek to discover the vision God is giving to us, among other questions, we will be asked to identify who we are and why we are the way we are as a congregation. As an organized group of Christians, what is our nature? That is, what is our most natural way of being as a Christian body of believers?

Scripture teaches that as individual Christians, we are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19) and that Christ lives in us (Gal.2:20). Those are powerful images. As important and necessary as it was, Jesus did more than die on the cross for us. He lived a certain way, taught a way of life, and rose from the dead to confirm all of it. So, what lives in us is all of who Jesus was and what he taught.

With the Spirit of Christ living in each of us, it is not too far of a stretch to conclude that Christ is living in us as a congregation – as a body of believers.

People who knew Dan Laesch for any length of time could easily see he was a kind and generous man who did not know how to be anything other than kind and generous. When people get to know Glendale Lutheran Church, what do they see? What about Christ living in us stands out?

Church Picnic

Mark your calendars for the GLC Picnic and Big Playdate on Saturday, September 17! Bounce house and games start at 11am and the potluck begins at noon. Meat will be provided so please bring a side, salad, or dessert to share. Plan on a day of fellowship and fun!

Finance Update

Food Drive

The GLC FOOD DRIVE is happening again this year from September 15 - October 15. For our neighbors who have struggled to keep up with essential items for their families or individuals who have limited funds, it has only gotten harder to manage their household with the rising costs of basic needs. .There will be a table in the entry where you can place your contributions. We will have lists from Kirk Care that can help you decide what to purchase. Please Remember NO GLASS is allowed.

If you want to contribute but cannot manage the shopping, you can contribute by giving Cathie Albers or Marcia Hempel cash, we would be grateful to shop for your items. Another choice is to place an envelope in one of our mailboxes.

Thank you for anything you can give.

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God (LSB 941)

We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord,

The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored.

To You all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing,

The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring:

“O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth!”

The band of the apostles in glory sing Your praise;

The fellowship of prophets their deathless voices raise.

The martyrs of Your kingdom, a great and noble throng,

Sing with the holy Church throughout all the world this song:

“O all-majestic Father, Your true and only Son,

And Holy Spirit, Comforter—forever Three in One!”

You, Christ, are King of glory, the everlasting Son,

Yet You, with boundless love, sought to rescue ev’ryone:

You laid aside Your glory, were born of virgin’s womb,

Were crucified for us and were placed into a tomb;

Then by Your resurrection You won for us reprieve—

You opened heaven’s kingdom to all who would believe.

You sit in splendid glory, enthroned at God’s right hand,

Upholding earth and heaven by forces You command.

We know that You will come as our Judge that final day,

So help Your servants You have redeemed by blood, we pray;

May we with saints be numbered where praises never end,

In glory everlasting. Amen, O Lord, amen!

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Opening Sentences - Deuteronomy 6:4–5; Proverbs 3:3–6

P:  Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

C:  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

P:  Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.

C:  So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.

P:  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

C:  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.

Confession and Absolution

P:  Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and ask His gracious forgiveness for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C:  We now confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature and by deed. We have not always put God first. We have used His holy name in ways that do not honor Him. We have not always been devoted to the Lord and have not fully cherished the sacred writings of our faith. We have failed in ways of keeping our thoughts, words, and deeds pure and honorable. At times we have taken what is not ours and have spoken that which is not helpful or true. We have broken the law of God by coveting that which is not rightfully ours and have not put the best construction on all things and spoken the best of all people. We pray our God to have mercy on us, to forgive us all our sins, and to bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

P:  The almighty and merciful Lord grants us pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P:  Your testimonies are righteous forever;

        give me understanding that I may live.

C:  Righteous are you, O Lord,

        and right are your just decrees.

P:  You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness

        and in all faithfulness.

C:  My zeal consumes me,

        because my foes forget your words.

P:  Your promise is well tried,

        and your servant loves it.

C:  Your righteousness is righteous forever,

        and your law is true.

 All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

 P:  Your testimonies are righteous forever;

        give me understanding that I may live.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Let us pray. O Lord, keep Your Church in Your perpetual mercy; and because without You we cannot but fall, preserve us from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

First ReadingAmos 8: 4–7

Hear this, you who trample on the needy

 and bring the poor of the land to an end,

saying, “When will the new moon be over,

 that we may sell grain?

And the Sabbath,

 that we may offer wheat for sale,

that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great

 and deal deceitfully with false balances,

that we may buy the poor for silver

 and the needy for a pair of sandals

and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

 The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob:

“Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – James 4:1-12

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Luke 16:1-15

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixteenth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus] also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.

“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Standin’ in the Need of Prayer (AGPS 220)

Not my brother, nor my sister,

But it’s me, O Lord,

Standin’ in the need of prayer;

Not my brother, nor my sister,

But it’s me, O Lord,

Standin’ in the need of prayer;

It’s me, it’s me, O Lord,

Standin’ in the need of prayer;

It’s me, it’s me, O Lord,

Standin’ in the need of prayer.

Children’s Sermon – Steph Chapa

Hymn of the Day – Chief of Sinners Though I Be (LSB 611)

Chief of sinners though I be,

Jesus shed His blood for me,

Died that I might live on high,

Lives that I might never die.

As the branch is to the vine,

I am His, and He is mine.

Oh, the height of Jesus’ love,

Higher than the heav’ns above,

Deeper than the depths of sea,

Lasting as eternity!

Love that found me—wondrous thought!

Found me when I sought Him not.

Only Jesus can impart

Balm to heal the wounded heart,

Peace that flows from sin forgiv’n,

Joy that lifts the soul to heav’n,

Faith and hope to walk with God

In the way that Enoch trod.

Chief of sinners though I be,

Christ is all in all to me;

All my wants to Him are known,

All my sorrows are His own.

He sustains the hidden life

Safe with Him from earthly strife.

O my Savior, help afford

By Your Spirit and Your Word!

When my wayward heart would stray,

Keep me in the narrow way;

Grace in time of need supply

While I live and when I die.

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P:  It is truly good, right, and proper that we should give thanks and praise to You, O Lord, for in Jesus Christ, the Servant of all, You have shown Your saving love and rescued us from sin, death, and the power of the devil. Grant that, in response to our salvation, we may live to Your glory, awaiting that time when Jesus, who is our Host at this Holy Meal, prepares for us and all the faithful the eternal heavenly banquet. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us that we may rejoice in the gifts before us and thank You with songs of praise and hearts filled with love.

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, O Lord eternal, and blessed be Your name. In Your great love, You sent Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be the promised Savior, whose life of service fulfilled Your will and completed the work of salvation. With thankfulness, we bless You for all that He has obtained for us. Gather into one, we pray, all Your people who now join at Your holy Table. By Your presence in this Sacrament nourish us, so that all we who partake of Christ’s holy body and blood may be strengthened to serve You and our neighbor, as You would have us do. To You, O God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—be all honor and glory in Your holy Church, forever and ever.

C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

              The Lamb is reigning on His throne!

The Lamb, the Lamb,

The Lamb, the Lamb,

Let earth join heav’n His praise to sing. Refrain

The Lamb, the Lamb,

Closing Hymn – Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus (LSB 685)

Let us ever walk with Jesus,

Follow His example pure,

Through a world that would deceive us

And to sin our spirits lure.

Onward in His footsteps treading,

Pilgrims here, our home above,

Full of faith and hope and love,

Let us do the Father’s bidding.

Faithful Lord, with me abide;

I shall follow where You guide.

Let us suffer here with Jesus

And with patience bear our cross.

Joy will follow all our sadness;

Where He is, there is no loss.

Though today we sow no laughter,

We shall reap celestial joy;

All discomforts that annoy

Shall give way to mirth hereafter.

Jesus, here I share Your woe;

Help me there Your joy to know.

Let us gladly die with Jesus.

Since by death He conquered death,

He will free us from destruction,

Give to us immortal breath.

Let us mortify all passion

That would lead us into sin;

And the grave that shuts us in

Shall but prove the gate to heaven.

Jesus, here with You I die,

There to live with You on high.

Let us also live with Jesus.

He has risen from the dead

That to life we may awaken.

Jesus, You are now our head.

We are Your own living members;

Where You live, there we shall be

In Your presence constantly,

Living there with You forever.

Jesus, let me faithful be,

Life eternal grant to me.
