| | Pastor Scott's Message On Thursday October 12th, I'm leading a new Bible study opportunity "Lunch with Luther." From noon to 1pm we will be diving into the Reformation using the superbly made Lutheran Hour Ministries series, "A Man Named Martin, Part 1." We are nearing the 500th anniversary of the nailing of the 95 thesis. That act was a crucial moment in the history of the church. It led to a wide spread discovery of the Gospel. God used his servant Martin Luther to share the good news with the world. "Lunch with Luther" will give you insights into history and Luther's testimony. We will celebrate that God was working in the church 500 years ago and continues to work today. Jesus began a good work in Germany five centuries ago and he will bring that good work to completion through his church. "Lunch with Luther" will meet for five Thursdays.

| Annual Report Four tumultuous years have passed since we created an  "annual" report. We have corrected this lapse and are committed not to let this happen again. Generating an annual report is an important exercise for us in that it allows us to think, reflect, and evaluate to what degree we are being successful and true to our stated mission as a congregation. A report has been prepared and is now available covering our activities since our last formal report on the 2012/2013 fiscal year. The report is designed to update members on the congregation's mission and ministry, including a review of developments with our staff, our Faith Formation and Christian Education Ministry, and our membership and worship participation. The report also contains a financial overview of our assets, liabilities, annual income, and expenses, with a discussion of how our financial condition has improved over the past four years. Further, the report includes a review of our baptisms, confirmations, transfers in and out of our congregation, and deaths. Finally, the report explains activities associated with managing our sanctuary and campus buildings. We encourage everyone to obtain and read a copy of the report, which can be found on the table in the back of the sanctuary. We are grateful to Jerry Nicolaus, Mike Toney, Steve Albers, Andy Ortstadt, and Michelle Fiala for their hard work in compiling the information included in the report and then generating a document that is both informative and uplifting.

| Thank you! As announced last week, Jim Thielker will be taking on the Music Director position beginning on October 9...which means Bill Lubben will be playing his last Sunday for Glendale on October 8. We are so very grateful for his willingness to carry our music worship forward during the past couple of months and appreciate his joyful presence. He and Judy will be greatly missed as they venture forth to Texas, but we hope to see them again! |
| Oktoberfest Glendale's Oktoberfest is back by popular demand! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 14 starting at 6:00pm at the home of Sandy and Paul Barbercheck. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend and enjoy the fellowship of Glendale members. We will feature some of the brews from Dan Stauder and Tony Petzoldt from the Gefarhliches Ding Brewery and there will be other beverages as well. Come by, bring a dish to share if you want and enjoy an autumn evening at the Barberchecks, 629 Bonita Avenue, Webster Groves. Babysitting will be provided (2 doors down at the Ortstadt home). Welcome fall with your Glendale friends!

Potluck  It's that time again, time to meet and eat! Our first potluck of the season will be Wednesday, October 18. We will gather at 6:00pm for fellowship and begin dining about 6:30pm. Hope to see a lot of you there!

| Community Events LHSS Fall Concerts Lutheran High School South invites all to enjoy back-to-back concerts on Sunday and Monday, October 1 and 2. On Sunday evening at 7:00pm the high school choirs will present their fall concert in the Kuhlmann Center at the school on Tesson Ferry Road. Four choirs, including the Lancer Singers, will perform. A free will offering will be received, and a cookie reception will follow the concert. On Monday, October 2, over 100 elementary students from across the region will gather for the Lutheran Youth Choral Festival at LHSS. After a day rehearsing with Dr. Charles Brown from Concordia Chicago, the group will present their concert at 7:00pm at LHSS. Included on the program are the LHSS Lancer Singers and Junior Singers. Join us as we "sing at South!" Brew in the Lou LESA's 5th Annual "Brew in the Lou" Festival will showcase new brews, aged spirits and home-grown entertainment when it returns to the Lily Pond at Francis Park on Saturday, October 14, from 1:00-5:00pm. This year's Brew line-up includes more than 40 local, regional and national breweries, wineries and distilleries--one-stop-tasting for St. Louis craft fans. St. Louis rockers Nick Bifano & The Innocents will lead the live music line-up, followed by the Deutschmeister German Brass Band and music by Brew sponsor 103.3 KLOU. This year's festival also includes arts and craft vendors, always popular People's Choice Home Brew Competition, two food fights--the Battle of the Bratwurst and a Brew Chili Contest. Wristbands are $40 advance/$50 day-of-event and include unlimited tastings and a commemorative glass. Proceeds benefit students and teachers served by the St. Louis-based Lutheran Elementary School Association (LESA). Last year's "Brew in the Lou" sold out for the first time in the event's history and raised an a record $91,000 for Lutheran schools in the St. Louis Metro Area.
Trivia Night The Women of the Word of St Johns Lutheran Church invite you to join us for our annual trivia night on Saturday, October 21 at the St. Louis Police Officers' Association Hall (3710 Hampton Ave, between Mardel and Tholozan). Doors open at 6:00pm and trivia starts at 6:45pm. The cost is $17 per person or $120 for a table of eight, which includes trivia, soda, cookies, and light snacks. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, but bringing your own is not permitted. Tickets may be purchased by contacting the church office at 314-773-0126. Reformation Anniversary Service Concordia Seminary invites you to an area-wide Reformation  Anniversary Service at 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 31. The festive service will include area choirs, with many of our Lutheran schools participating. Join us at the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus as we celebrate, reaffirm, and witness to God's unmerited grace to us through faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. |
