Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
April 28, 2022
Starting this Sunday, I am preaching through the book of Revelation. The Lutheran Church has an uneasy relationship with the last book of the Bible. We believe that the clear parts of scripture should be emphasized over the unclear ones. Lutherans stay in the Gospels and the epistles like Romans. It allows us to make the main things the main things.

Pastors may avoid Revelation because there is a lot to unravel. Apocalyptic literature can send us in all sorts of directions. End time prophecy has long been the domain of hucksters and bad theologians. Yet, God gave us this book for our benefit. We just finished John’s Gospel so why not stay with him in his companion book.

Our understanding of Law and Gospel will help us remain calm through this book. There are many scary things in there but they are all in the light of a loving God who is remaking a new heaven and earth. Learning the symbols and history of Revelation can ease our fears and anxiety. It is a book first written for John’s contemporaries and we should read it in the light. It also blesses us in our day and we should read it in that light as well. Join me in studying this fascinating book over the next couple of months.

Lutheran Foundation Playground Grant

The Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis has agreed to provide a $50,000 challenge matching grant toward the playground improvements the congregation approved. As part of the grant process, the Lutheran Foundation will match any individual member gifts up to $5,000 per gift until the $50,000 grant total is met. By way of example, if we have 10 members contribute $5,000 each, the Lutheran Foundation will match the entire $50,000. Please note this matching provision does not apply to the bequest funds the congregation has dedicated toward the playground. Congregation members can contribute toward the playground fund any time before August 1, 2022, which is the deadline the Lutheran Foundation has set for contributions it will match up to $5,000 per donor toward the $50,000 total.

Additional information on the Lutheran Fund matching grant can be found on the bulletin board in the atrium. You can also reach out to Kelly Climer if you have any additional questions on the grant.
Christian Friends of New Americans Update

Pastor Scott and a team that includes Jeanne Clark, John Steele, Steve Phelps, Andrea Anderson, Cathie Albers, John Loscuito, Josh Boehme, Karlie Auble, and Laura Murphy are helping to assimilate the 11-member Mohammed family from Afghanistan as part of the Christian Friends of New Americans program, an outreach ministry to immigrants and refugees in the greater St. Louis area. The team has helped the Mohammeds obtain driver licenses, bank accounts, state identifications, and job offers. Additionally, the team assists the Mohammeds with shopping, budgeting, obtaining health care including dental work with Greg Frimel, and purchasing toiletries, household items, and clothing. Christian Friends of New Americans funds all of our team’s efforts. Moreover, the team’s work supports all three of our ministries, to include Our Facility and Members, Community Outreach, and World Mission. Kudos to our Christian Friends of New Americans team!

Valentines for CCLS
Stephanie Chapa organized the Valentines for CCLS on Sunday, February 6, 2022, with the goal of showing God’s love to CCLS children and teachers through words of encouragement contained in handmade Valentines while also bringing recognition and connection among the congregation members and school. The event was part Our Facility and Members area of emphasis and a minimal amount from our Church budget was used to purchases the materials needed to crate the Valentines. Stephanie is pleased to report an overwhelmingly successfully event that included a group of 30 Church members who created Valentines for 90 CCLS students and 25 teachers. Additionally, Stephanie was thrilled to see the bountiful love and concern attendees demonstrated for our CCLS little ones and staff, all of whom were grateful for the loving and encouraging messages they received.

GLC/CCLS Big Playdate
Stephanie also stayed busy putting together a playdate with Glendale Lutheran Church children and CCLS children on Saturday, March 26, 2022, as part of Our Facilities and Members and our Community Outreach areas of emphasis to foster Christian fellowship between our congregation families and CCLS families and to satisfy the need for play and exploration in a safe Christian environment. Pastor Scott allocated a small amount from our budget to use for the playdate and he along with Susan Loscuito, John Loscuito, and Andrea Anderson helped lead stations and food service for the 35 children and 40 adults who participated in the event. The children were absolutely thrilled to play with one another outside of school and the parents were overjoyed with the opportunity to meet other parents in the Glendale Lutheran Church community after having limited interaction with others because of the social barriers the pandemic created by the pandemic had limited interaction with other families. Stephanie predicts a similar event in the fall will be even more successful.
Quilters

We no longer have a place to give our quilts so we are no longer making them. Because of this, we will no longer be accepting fabric donations. Additionally, we need someone to go through the fabric stored in the quilting closet and donate it elsewhere.

If you know of a place accepting donations for 60x80 quilts, please let Pastor know. Thank you!
