Hymn of Invocation – Borning Cry

I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old.

I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.

I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well;

I’ll be there in case you wander off and find where demons dwell.

When you found the wonder of the Word, I was there to cheer you on;

You were raised to praise the living God, to whom you now belong.

Should you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one,

I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun.

In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young,

I’ll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I’ve begun.

When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes,

I’ll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise.

I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old.

I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Opening SentencesPsalm 34:1-3, 5, 22

P:  I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

C:  My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.

P:  Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together!

C:  Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.

     The Lord redeems the life of His servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

Confession and Absolution

P:  Almighty God, we know and admit that we are sinners. We are conceived and born sinful, and we add on to that burden of sin throughout our lives by our heedless thoughts, careless words, and loveless deeds. Indeed, we deserve God’s punishment now and eternally. When we reflect honestly on our lives, we readily see that we need repentance and renewal that can only come through our Lord, Jesus Christ. Let us then make confession to our gracious God.

C:  Almighty God, we repent of our sins in thought and in word and in deed. You know too well our failings and our transgressions. Be merciful to us and for the sake of Jesus, grant us Your forgiveness so that, as Your redeemed people, we may find rest in You and with refreshed hearts serve You in time and in eternity.

P:  In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P:  Blessèd are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.

C:  How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!

P:  My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.

C:  Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.

P:  Blessèd are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise!

All:   Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

         as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  Blessèd are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Let us pray. Almighty God, source of all power and restorer of health and life, draw us ever closer to You and supply us with the living water that will quench our great thirst for time and for eternity. This we ask in the name of Jesus, who offered Himself as our Savior and our Redeemer.

C:  Amen.

First ReadingExodus 17:1–7

All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 5:1–8

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMatthew 19:13-15

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the nineteenth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away.

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praiseimH.

P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And now we thank You that by the working of Your Holy Spirit through the Gospel, You have called us as Your own and given us eternal promises through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, as the perfect offering, has taken upon Himself the sins of the world and has, by His rising from the grave, opened to us the very gates of heaven. With all the company around the throne of the Lamb in His kingdom, we join the unending praises:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for all You have done for Your people in Jesus Christ, our Lord. We thank You for all of creation and for every good gift with which You bless us. Accept our praise, Lord, and grant that all who partake of Christ’s holy body and blood this day be refreshed and filled with Your heavenly peace and joy. As we receive the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation, grant that we be sanctified in body and soul and spirit and finally be granted our place with all Your saints in glory. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – I Come, O Savior, to Thy Table (LSB 618)

I come, O Savior, to Thy table,

For weak and weary is my soul;

Thou, Bread of Life, alone art able

To satisfy and make me whole: Refrain

Refrain:  Lord, may Thy body and Thy blood

              Be for my soul the highest good!

Thy heart is filled with fervent yearning

That sinners may salvation see

Who, Lord, to Thee in faith are turning;

So I, a sinner, come to Thee. Refrain

Unworthy though I am, O Savior,

Because I have a sinful heart,

Yet Thou Thy lamb wilt banish never,

For Thou my faithful shepherd art: Refrain

Weary am I and heavy laden;

With sin my soul is sore oppressed;

Receive me graciously and gladden

My heart, for I am now Thy guest. Refrain

What higher gift can we inherit?

It is faith’s bond and solid base;

It is the strength of heart and spirit,

The covenant of hope and grace. Refrain

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P:  Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God, we thank You for having fed us with the body and blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ, assuring us thereby that we are truly members of His Body, the Church. Be among us with Your sacred and refreshing gifts, O Lord, and enlighten us by the working of Your Holy Spirit that we may continue in this fellowship and do the good works which You desire us to do; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, to whom, with You and the same Spirit, be all honor and glory, forever and ever.

C:  Amen.

Benediction

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – Go, My Children, with My Blessing (LSB 922)

Go, My children, with My blessing, never alone.

Waking, sleeping, I am with you; you are My own.

In My love’s baptismal river

I have made you Mine forever.

Go, My children, with My blessing—you are My own.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure.

Here you heard My dear Son’s story;

Here you touched Him, saw His glory.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

Go, My children, fed and nourished, closer to Me;

Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free.

Here My Spirit’s power filled you;

Here His tender comfort stilled you.

Go, My children, fed and nourished, joyful and free.

I the Lord will bless and keep you and give you peace;

I the Lord will smile upon you and give you peace:

I the Lord will be your Father,

Savior, Comforter, and Brother.

Go, My children; I will keep you and give you peace.
