Addiction Treatment Strategies

You are invited to the next Deacons’ meeting this coming Monday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. The topic for discussion will be Addiction and Addiction Recovery. One of our own members – Andrea Anderson – will be the presenter. Andrea has over twelve years of experience working with those struggling with alcohol
and drug addiction and who are seeking to become stable and healthy. Recently retired, Andrea continues to serve as part-time consultant, educator, and small group leader. Joining with Andrea will be John Crum, a Licensed Clinical and Professional Counselor, and founder of Addiction Treatment Strategies in Edwardsville, IL where Andrea continues to serve.

The meeting will be held in the library.

He is Risen Indeed! - article by Joel Hempel

Although the above familiar phrase was not included in the bulletin this past Sunday, and though we did not proclaim it during worship, Pastor Emeritus Steve Albers reminded us that we are still in the Easter season and will be – liturgically speaking – until Pentecost on June 5.

Living in the Easter "season" is crucial to our well-being as Christians. "We live this side of Easter," Pastor Albers preached. It may be too cynical for print, but my guess is that until Pastor Albers reminded us of this fact, none of us were aware of it. Or, if aware, we hadn't thought about it. That's just how it is if you are not a pastor or commissioned minister whose "job" is to think about such things. But it would serve us well to remind ourselves that even though the Easter season officially ends on June 5, spiritually and experientially, we live in Easter year-round.

“The Lord is risen!” one person declares. “He Is Risen Indeed!” we respond. Maybe that phrase is becoming too familiar and meaningless. I hope not, but it would be normal to hear it, say it, and then move on to what's next. But the Easter season is intentionally 50 days long because (a) it’s fifty days after our Lord’s resurrection that the promised Holy Spirit is given to the church, and (b) the season is long enough to keep the Easter message in front of us so we can absorb its eternal meaning and day-to-day value.

“He is risen indeed!” is a statement of faith. Sure, the once-a-year worshipper might join in and speak these words with us on Easter morning, but the intentional and confirmed Christian – the Christian who daily is aware of her salvation through Jesus Christ and the privilege of living life for Him – that Christian proclaims these words with passion! For we know, we cannot live without them.

Easter is to us what oxygen is to the human body. Easter is life. On the fun side, Easter is lilies, chocolate bunnies, and a beautifully decorated chancel. It’s elegant dresses on little girls and fancy shirts on little boys. On the more serious side, Easter is our promise that we, too, will be raised to life eternal with Jesus. And, it’s our victory over every challenge Satan throws at us.

He is risen indeed! I just looked up the definition of the word "indeed." It means "without any question…truly…undeniably". Truly, our Lord is risen. Without any question, we too will be among those clothed in heavenly white robes. Undeniably, Easter is our hope!
Voters' Meetings

The Leadership Council is calling two Voters’ Meetings to take place in the Family Life Center immediately after the service on June 5, 2022, and June 26, 2022. The agenda for the June 5, 2022, will include a first reading of the proposed 2022-2023 Church Budget and the Leadership Council will request voter approval for the Budget at the June 27, 2022, meeting. Please make sure to mark these dates in your calendar so you can attend and ask any questions you may have. We will also provide updates on the Playground at the June 5, 2022, meeting along with information on funding efforts for the Playground.
Lutheran Foundation Playground Grant

The Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis has agreed to provide a $50,000 challenge matching grant toward the playground improvements the congregation approved. As part of the grant process, the Lutheran Foundation will match any individual member gifts up to $5,000 per gift until the $50,000 grant total is met. By way of example, if we have 10 members contribute $5,000 each, the Lutheran Foundation will match the entire $50,000. Please note this matching provision does not apply to the bequest funds the congregation has dedicated toward the playground. Congregation members can contribute toward the playground fund any time before August 1, 2022, which is the deadline the Lutheran Foundation has set for contributions it will match up to $5,000 per donor toward the $50,000 total.

Additional information on the Lutheran Fund matching grant can be found on the bulletin board in the atrium. You can also reach out to Kelly Climer if you have any additional questions on the grant.
