You - article by Joel Hempel

Have no doubt. It is about you. For unto you Christ was born! Originally, those words were spoken to the shepherds in the field as they were keeping watch over their flock.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them . . . “Fear not, for I bring you good news of great joy . . . For unto you is born a Savior, who is Christ the Lord . . .” 1

In comparison to others, how important are you? Are you significant in the grand scheme of things? Before that night, if any of those shepherds considered these questions, they would have likely answered, No! But something changed their perspective of themselves. What moved their estimation of themselves from insignificant to extraordinarily blessed was the word you.

You!

Unto you is Jesus born.

The shepherds were like us. Ordinary people who were blessed beyond measure to have the Gospel break into their lives with the uncommon announcement, Unto you is born the Savior who is Christ.

Of course, you (and I) would be irrelevant in this story of salvation if it were not for the Savior who is Christ the Lord. But this devotion is about you.

Throughout the New Testament, the Gospel is proclaimed to individuals. Even when Jesus was preaching to the 5000, he was speaking to the one in the crowd, to each one. Two thousand years later, the Gospel continues to be spoken to the one:

Unto you, Jesus was born!

Now, you have a choice. You can read that Gospel declaration like you read an umpteenth Merry Christmas wish. Or you can stop and take it in. Jesus was born to you . . . For you.

Jesus is your Savior, your Friend, your Lover, your Comforter, your Lord, your Companion until the end. And then, He will be the Lamb on His throne who took away your sins.

There is nothing insignificant or irrelevant about you. You are why Jesus was born.

GLC Vision, Mission and Ministry

What follows is our proposed GLC Vision with four mission and ministry emphases. Examples of the mission and ministry possibilities will be presented at our meeting on January 11.

A community of believers where courageously and sacrificially loving like Jesus within and beyond the church family is abundantly evident.

Mission and Ministry Emphases (to be developed and led by a select group)

  • Sacrificial love for each other.
  • Sacrificial love of our neighbors (near and far).
  • The Gospel and Christ’s character are prominently proclaimed, taught, and lived through our personal and congregational identity.
  • Witness preparation and personal faith-sharing are supported.

Jesus’ sacrifice was apparent from before his earthly recorded ministry began with his departure from heaven to be our Servant. Indeed, his life was courageous from his humble beginning to his suffering and death. Our Lord chose his disciples to follow in his footsteps and to live this radical life of love, and now he calls us.1

To understand what it means to love courageously and sacrificially like Jesus, we look to how Jesus loved. Our Lord’s love was sometimes gentle, other times challenging, but always compassionate. He went out of his way to love the unlovable,2 was tough on those who were unforgiving, hypocritical, and rigidly demanding,3 and soft on sinners who knew they needed to repent.4 While Jesus forgave generously, he also challenged people to leave their sinful lifestyles behind so those lifestyles would no longer define them.5

Jesus loved like no other and directed all who would follow him to love with the same conviction and commitment. Loving like Jesus involves the courage and self-sacrifice to put love into action, as well as the daily choice to be kind and gracious. Being loved by Jesus compels us to willingly give up our own comfort and possessions for the good of others when needed.

What might our courageous and sacrificial love look like? If we are open to the Spirit’s guidance, God will put in our hearts and line of sight those he needs us to serve and how he needs us to give. We can begin by recognizing and expressing appreciation for the sacrificial love GLC already practices. When appropriate, post examples of courageous and sacrificial love on our website and other outlets, thereby letting others know what is being done and inviting them to be part of the ministry.
