A Message from Dr. Biermann
During this time that I am serving as your vacancy pastor, I am certainly eager to do all that I can to provide for the spiritual needs of the members of Glendale. Of course, this care takes place not only on Sunday mornings, but also throughout the week. I will be happy to meet with anyone desiring specific pastoral counsel or care and will do my best to accommodate any needs. To extend the availability of midweek ministry, especially to those who are sick or shut-in, the congregation will also be served during this time by Rev. Eric Erkkinen. Rev. Erkkinen is a retired US Army chaplain and also served for a number of years as a parish pastor. He and his wife are members at Concordia, Kirkwood. I believe that as Rev. Erkkinen assists me, things should work smoothly, and we will be able to meet the needs of the members of Glendale as they arise. If you become aware of any matter that might benefit from pastoral care, please contact either myself or Pastor Erkkinen directly, or through the church office. Especially let us know of any illnesses or hospitalizations so that we might offer appropriate pastoral care.

Chaplain (LTC) Eric Erkkinen served for seven years on the staff of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) International Center from 2008-2015 as the assistant director of Ministry to the Armed Forces. His responsibilities included administering clerical and budgetary matters for the ministry, editing the "Ministry-by-Mail" program, overseeing the chaplain candidate program at the LCMS' two seminaries and recruiting.
Prior to his serving at Ministry to the Armed Force, Eric served as a parish pastor for four years in Minnesota and for seven years in Florida.  He entered active duty as an Army chaplain in1988 and retired in 2008.  He served three combat tours in the Middle East.  He also provided critical chaplain support during the search and recovery phase at the Pentagon after the 9-11 attack in 2001.  He and his wife, Linda, a newly retired Lutheran preschool teacher reside in Oakville.   Her last position was at St John's Lutheran, in Arnold, MO.  The have three grown children and seven grandchildren.
"The Little Sheep Who Hear the Voice of Their Shepherd."

Careful doctrine and profound theology is not always obscure or difficult to grasp. Luther's delightful definition of the church is actually part of our Confession; it's in the Smalcald Articles. As simple and quaint as the quote first appears, it is packed with significance and challenge.

You are the church--the sheep of God's flock. You are in the church by his choice. Since he is your shepherd you live with confidence and assurance. God himself provides for you. God himself directs and guides you. The image of God as your shepherd offers true comfort. But, it also presents a blunt reality. Sheep need to hear their shepherd's voice. Your shepherd speaks in the Divine Service. On Sunday morning, gathered with God's other sheep, you hear Scripture read and listen to God's Word. But, gathered in worship is also where God's under-shepherd, the pastor, speaks the Lord's truth directly to you in the midst of your present realities. The sermon is God speaking to his sheep.

Sheep need to hear the voice of their shepherd. As one of his sheep, you need to hear him speak to you. You need to be in worship, receiving God's gifts and hearing his Word on a regular basis...and, "regular" means the pattern built into creation itself: every week. Every week, you join in the Divine Service, and hear God speak. Every week, you stay for one more hour and hear God speak yet more fully and with great specificity in the Bible study time. I'm looking forward to my first sermon and Bible class with you, serving for a while as your under-shepherd. I hope to see you then, and every subsequent Sunday. God speaks; be a sheep that listens.

Faith Formation Ministry

One Family Bible Class
Jesus declared that even the gates of hell cannot withstand the power of the Gospel in Matthew 16:18.  He paints an image of the church as an invading force not a walled-up fortress. He paints an image of the victory that is certain through the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Yet, many times congregations and their members feel more like they are struggling, and failing, to keep the evil of this world at bay.

In addition to being our guest preacher for September 25, Pastor Todd Jones, a revitalization consultant and faculty member from Concordia Seminary, will lead an important discussion during the Bible class hour.  He will share an overview of the processes of reflection, refinement, and refocusing that can enable congregations to continue beating down the gates of hell, that the captives might be freed through God's grace.

This will be the first of a multi-part Sunday morning Bible class discussion about growing our ministry.  Grab a cup of coffee and come to help shape how we bring God's grace to our community.

Sunday School
Sunday School for ages 3 years through High School Seniors resumes this Sunday.  Preschool through 1st grade children will meet in the lower level of the Parish House (under the gym).  Grades 2 through 6 will meet in the lower level of the new building across from the elevator, room 012.  High School youth will gather in the Youth Room.   Confirmation class for 7th and 8th grade youth will be in the conference room next to Pastor's office, room 113.

Stewardship Sentence
1 Corinthians 1:4  "I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus." The grace of God and thanksgiving go together. When God gives to us - and what do we have that He has not given to us? - then thankfulness wells up inside of us. How could it not? And as Paul shows us here, it's not only the grace given to us individually that causes us to give thanks, but even the grace given to others. We certainly have much to be thankful for when we look at the gifts of grace all around us. And how do we say thank you to the Lord? In any number of ways: in prayer, in sacrificial giving to His mission, in imitating His love and kindness to those around us.
Calling All Thrivent Members!
If you are a member of Thrivent Financial, and you so choose, you have the opportunity to share some of your Action Team Dollars with ministries and projects going on in our GLC congregation and community.   Many Thrivent members are not aware that these funds are available so they go unused. The outreach committee has used some of these Action Team dollars to host outreach events in the past, but would like to get more Thrivent members involved. If you are interested in leaning more about how to use you Action Team funds, please contact Sue Schultz at 314-304-0556.
Attention All Crafters!
Remember that the craft fair will be on October 15, 2016. We will be accepting donations of craft items of all types. It will be helpful if items are priced by the donor and in the hands of the crafter committee, i.e. the Nifty Knitters and Clever Crocheters, by October 13. That will enable us to work out the display arrangements. If you have questions, contact Sally Dobrunz at 314-821-5256. Thank you for supporting the organ fund!
Name Tags
You may have noticed that our name tags have once again been placed in the entrance hall. In light of the fact that we have a new pastor, we hope that you will wear yours to help him get to know us and feel part of the congregation. It would also be helpful for those attending the potluck, to help our guests from CCLS feel at home here. Thanks so much!
