Weekly Newsletter

Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
January 14, 2021
One of the things that I love about church is that we can discuss real issues that matter in a loving environment. Everyone says avoid talking about religion and politics at family gatherings because you never know what can happen. Social media has become too toxic to have elevated dialogue. The work place is inappropriate for such long discussions. But at Glendale during our Sunday morning class we can dive into such things and know that we won’t be judged. Instead we will be encouraged by our brothers and sisters in Christ. Over the next several weeks we will be exploring our vocations of citizen of heaven with our vocation of citizen of America through the Lutheran Hour Ministry Study called “We the People: Citizens of Two Kingdoms.”

Politics and politicians--there's seemingly no way to escape them. Though government and those who govern are often criticized by press and citizen alike, it is through government that God works His designs in this world. Join host Dr. Dale Meyer as he surveys government in history, the character of the United States as a nation, and the Christian's role as a citizen of any country.

In We the People: Citizens of Two Kingdoms, Concordia Seminary President Meyer surveys the emergence of the United States' governmental system by considering the religious and philosophic thinking that shaped its early development. Along the way concepts like "ceremonial deism," "democracy," "theocracy," "republic," Martin Luther's "Two Kingdoms" and more will be explored.

Throughout this video and the accompanying discussion guide, tough questions are raised that help the user understand the demanding balance between Church and State. Politics and religion often separate people in sharp and defining ways, dividing a country along shifting lines. Yet, no matter what one's perspective is, for the Christian his or her citizenship is an opportunity to serve in both the affairs of earthly government and the mission of the Christian Church on earth--Martin Luther's "Two Kingdoms."

Join us in person or online so that we can be united despite our political differences. Only the love of Christ can accomplish that.

Birthday Bags and Meal Kits 2021
Well, it’s been less than a month since the GLC Kirkcare food drive, and yes, we are asking for your help again.

This is the 6th year for our Birthday Bags and Meal Kits program with Operation Food Search (OFS). The program will officially start on January 31 with a table, sign and birthday boxes in the front entrance to church. Please place any contributions on or near the table. The final day is February 28 for turning in your contributions. Needless to say, there are many more families this year with few resources to celebrate.

Stacks of flyers will be available by our mail boxes explaining what is needed. There are a few changes on the meal kits. OFS prefers the Chili Night and Cajun Beans and Rice be used. They are also asking that we put the meal in a plastic grocery bag and then tie it up twice.

If you would like to participate in the program but cannot purchase the complete birthday bag and/or meal kit, or if you are unable to get out to do the buying, you can choose to buy part of what is needed or contribute money and someone else will do the shopping. The money can be given to Marcia Hempel, by mail, church mail box or in person.

Thank you for your help. It is a great cause and will be appreciated by families throughout the year.
Youth in Action/Kirkcare Food Giveaway
Youth In Action has teamed up with Kirkcare to give away boxes of food to 100 families in need. The food distribution will take place on January 30th from 10:00 to 11:30 AM in the parking lot of Glendale Lutheran Church. The giveaway is by invitation only through Kirkcare. It is not open to the public. The boxes will be assembled in the gym of Glendale Lutheran Church on Friday, January 29th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Volunteers are needed to assemble boxes of food on Friday. Greeters are also needed to welcome the families as they pick up on Saturday.

Youth In Action and various schools are collecting items for the boxes. If you would like to donate food items, we are in need of cans of beef stew and jars of peanut butter. There is a collection box in the hall outside the church office. Items are needed by January 27th. For more information contact Keith Rawlings at 314-398-0576 or keith4yia@hotmail.com.

Hymn of Invocation – All Glory, Laud, and Honor (LSB 442)

Refrain:  All glory, laud, and honor
To You, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the King of Israel
And David’s royal Son,
Now in the Lord’s name coming,
Our King and Blessèd One.  Refrain

The company of angels
Is praising You on high,
And we with all creation
In chorus make reply.  Refrain

The multitude of pilgrims
With palms before You went;
Our praise and prayer and anthems
Before You we present.  Refrain

+ Preparation +

Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Opening SentencesBased on Psalm 139:1–2, 7–8; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
P:  O Lord, You have searched and known us.
C:  You discern our thoughts from afar.
P:  Where shall we go from Your Spirit?
C:  Or where shall we flee from Your presence?
P:  If we ascend to heaven, You are there!
C:  If we make our bed in Sheol, You are there!
P:  Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
C:  We were bought with a price, the blood of Christ.

Confession and Absolution
P:  Indeed, we were bought with the precious blood of Christ, and God calls on us to glorify God with our bodies, but we have failed to do this. We have lived as if our bodies and lives were our own, as if Your Son had not bought them with His blood. Such sins cause deep shame, yet even now, our heavenly Father invites us to come to Him and ask for forgiveness.

Silence for reflection.

P:  Heavenly Father,
C:  we have sinned by the things we have done and by the things we have left undone. Forgive us, remove the shame that clings to us, and make us new creations for the sake of Jesus. Amen.
P:  Almighty God, in His infinite mercy and grace, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. In His resurrection, He removes our shame and makes us more than conquerors. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen. We are forgiven in Christ. Our shame is removed.

+ Word +

First Reading1 Samuel 3:1–10
Now the young man Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.
At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.
And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the young man. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 6:12–20
“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything. “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Mark 4:26-33
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourth chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s HymnLet Me Learn of Jesus (AGPS 156)

Let me learn of Jesus; He is kind to me;
Once he died to save me, nailed upon the tree.

When I go to Jesus, He will hear me pray,
Make me pure and holy, take my sins away.

Let me think of Jesus; He is full of love,
Looking down upon me from His throne above.

Oh, how good is Jesus! May He hold my hand
And at last receive me to a better land.

Children’s Sermon

Hymn of the Day – Thy Strong Word (LSB 578)

Thy strong word did cleave the darkness;
At Thy speaking it was done.
For created light we thank Thee,
While Thine ordered seasons run.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

From the cross Thy wisdom shining
Breaketh forth in conqu’ring might;
From the cross forever beameth
All Thy bright redeeming light.
Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

God the Father, light-creator,
To Thee laud and honor be.
To Thee, Light of Light begotten,
Praise be sung eternally.
Holy Spirit, light-revealer, Glory, glory be to Thee.
Mortals, angels, now and ever Praise the holy Trinity!

Sermon

Nicene Creed
C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,      begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven      and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;     and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Lord’s Prayer
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

Closing HymnGo, My Children, with My Blessing (LSB 922)

Go, My children, with My blessing, never alone.
Waking, sleeping, I am with you; you are My own.
In My love’s baptismal river
I have made you Mine forever.
Go, My children, with My blessing, never alone.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.
Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure.
Here you heard My dear Son’s story;
Here you touched Him, saw His glory.
Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.
