For Heaven's Sake! - article by Joel Hempel

After it finally became clear that God was calling me into the ministry, and after three years of working in the machine shop and completing two years of college at Kent State University Satellite in Canton, Ohio, I transferred to Valparaiso University.

One of the first courses I took was an introduction to New Testament theology. Sitting in that 7:00 AM class, I was shocked to hear the professor state that the soul dies with us when we die. What? That professor’s assertion drove me to study Scripture to see if there was any truth to his disturbing declaration.

Some 55 years later, thanks to the prof’s upsetting lecture, I know Scripture teaches a radically different message than what Professor X was pushing. But what exactly does happen to the soul after the death of a Christian?

Although there is a debate between those who believe the soul is in an unconscious sleep state (see John 11:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-15; and 1 Cor. 15:51) and those who think the soul is in a conscious or aware state, I believe the bulk of biblical evidence supports the latter. But whichever way you may lean, when we Christians die, we are with Jesus. That is certain!

We could explore many passages, but here are a few of the most straightforward verses. We know that when the thief on the cross repents, Jesus assures him that that day, “you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Then in 2 Corinthians 5:1-9 and again in Philippians 1:22-23, Paul shares his dilemma of wanting to be with Christ in the next life (what he refers to as “our heavenly dwelling”) vs continuing to serve the Lord in this life.

There was also the transfiguration of Jesus when Moses and Elijah met with Jesus in the sight of Peter, James, and John (Matthew 17:3-4). These references and others (see Matt. 22:31-32; Luke 16:22-23; Acts 7:55-59) give clear, biblical proof that we are with our Lord when we die – and aware of our surroundings.

When the Apostle John was given a vision of heaven, he saw a great multitude robed in white worshipping God (see Revelation 7:9-10).

Many years ago, when I served at Laclede Groves Retirement Community, for an All-Saints Day worship service, I used white sheets to cover 14 of the chairs in the chapel (the number of people among us who had died that year). So, when the residents and staff came into the chapel to worship, they sat with and around the white-covered chairs. I wanted to symbolize that our departed brothers and sisters were still spiritually alive, with Christ awaiting the resurrection.

We praise our Lord for the lives and souls of our sisters and brothers in the faith who have gone before us. And we thank God we get to join them!

Women's Tuesday Morning Bible Study

The Women’s Tuesday morning Bible Study will begin September 12th at 9:15 to study “Growing Older & Wiser”.

Life expectancies have stretched, but the Bible reveals that human nature has not changed. Wisdom does not automatically come with age. However, we can get wiser as we get older, if we tap into the eternal wisdom of God. These 9 studies offer a biblical perspective on aging and show how powerfully God can use those who have grown wiser with the years. You will read about older people who should have listened to younger people and vice versa. You will find honest expressions of fear and hope as the years accumulate and death looms closer. Throughout all of these stories you will find the constancy of God.

Look forward to having you join us - please call Jeanne (821-0522) or Carol (822-1365) if you have any questions.

Winter Clothing & Toy Drive

On October 7, Hands On Kirkwood will hold its annual “Free Winter Clothing & Toy Store.” Items to collect include coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, boots, and jeans for men, women and children sizes. We are also collecting toys, bicycles, children's books and diapers. Please make sure all items are clean and in good condition.

This event provides winter clothing items for all ages to those in need within our community free of charge. It continues to grow each year. Please help this event continue to grow by donating items to the collection box in the hallway. Collection deadline is September 24. Thank you!

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – On Eagles’ Wings (LSB 727)

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,

Who abide in His shadow for life,

Say to the Lord: “My refuge,

My rock in whom I trust!” Refrain

Refrain:  And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings,

Bear you on the breath of dawn,

Make you to shine like the sun,

And hold you in the palm of His hand.

The snare of the fowler will never capture you,

And famine will bring you no fear;

Under His wings your refuge,

His faithfulness your shield.  Refrain

You need not fear the terror of the night,

Nor the arrow that flies by day;

Though thousands fall about you,

Near you it shall not come.  Refrain

For to His angels He’s given a command

To guard you in all of your ways;

Upon their hands they will bear you up,

Lest you dash your foot against a stone.  Refrain

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P: Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

C: Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.

P: He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

C: Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

All:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy;

Christ, have mercy;

Lord, have mercy.

Gloria in Excelsis

To God on high be glory

And peace to all the earth;

Goodwill from God in heaven

Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!

We praise and bless You, Father;

Your holy name we sing—

Our thanks for Your great glory,

Lord God, our heav'nly King.

To You, O sole-begotten,

The Father's Son, we pray;

O Lamb of God, our Savior,

You take our sins away.

Have mercy on us, Jesus;

Receive our heartfelt cry,

Where You in pow'r are seated

At God's right hand on high—

For You alone are holy,

You only are the Lord.

Forever and forever,

Be worshiped and adored;

You with the Holy Spirit

Alone are Lord Most High,

In God the Father's glory.

"Amen!" our glad reply.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Almighty God, Your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption. Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingJeremiah 15:15–21

O Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance take me not away; know that for your sake I bear reproach. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of revelers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone, because your hand was upon me, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?

Therefore thus says the Lord: “If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the Lord. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 2 Timothy 2:1-13

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

These things are written that you may believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel Matthew 16:21-28

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Seek Ye First (LSB 712)

Seek ye first the kingdom of God,

And His righteousness.

And all these things shall be added unto you!

Allelu, alleluia!

Ask and it shall be given unto you,

Seek and ye shall find,

Knock and the door shall be opened unto you,

Allelu, alleluia!

Children’s Message – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – Thy Strong Word (LSB 578)

Thy strong word did cleave the darkness;

At Thy speaking it was done.

For created light we thank Thee,

While Thine ordered seasons run.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia without end!

Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness,

Dark as night and deep as death,

Broke the light of Thy salvation,

Breathed Thine own life-breathing breath.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia without end!

Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous;

Bright with Thine own holiness,

Glorious now, we press toward glory,

And our lives our hopes confess.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia without end!

From the cross Thy wisdom shining

Breaketh forth in conqu’ring might;

From the cross forever beameth

All Thy bright redeeming light.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia!

Alleluia without end!

Give us lips to sing Thy glory,

Tongues Thy mercy to proclaim,

Throats that shout the hope that fills us,

Mouths to speak Thy holy name.

Alleluia, alleluia!

May the light which Thou dost send

Fill our songs with alleluias,

Alleluias without end!

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy

Lord God of Sabaoth adored;

Heav'n and earth with full acclaim

shout the glory of Your name.

Sing hosanna in the highest,

sing hosanna to the Lord;

Truly blest is He who comes

in the name of the Lord!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after

supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God

Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ,

And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Jesus Comes Today with Healing (LSB 620)

Jesus comes today with healing,

Knocking at my door, appealing,

Off’ring pardon, grace, and peace.

He Himself makes preparation,

And I hear His invitation:

“Come and taste the blessèd feast.”

Christ Himself, the priest presiding,

Yet in bread and wine abiding

In this holy sacrament,

Gives the bread of life, once broken,

And the cup, the precious token

Of His sacred covenant.

Under bread and wine, though lowly,

I receive the Savior holy,

Blood and body, giv’n for me,

Very Lamb of God from heaven,

Who to bitter death was given,

Hung upon the cursèd tree.

God descends with heav’nly power,

Gives Himself to me this hour

In this ordinary sign.

On my tongue His pledge receiving,

I accept His grace, believing

That I taste His love divine.

Let me praise God’s boundless favor,

Whose own feast of love I savor,

Bidden by His gracious call.

Wedding garments He provides me,

With a robe of white He hides me,

Fits me for the royal hall.

Now have I found consolation,

Comfort in my tribulation,

Balm to heal the troubled soul.

God, my shield from ev’ry terror,

Cleanses me from sin and error,

Makes my wounded spirit whole.

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

O Lord, now let Your servant

Depart in heav'nly peace,

For I have seen the glory

Of Your redeeming grace:

A light to lead the Gentiles

Unto Your holy hill,

The glory of Your people,

Your chosen Israel.

All glory to the Father,

All glory to the Son,

All glory to the Spirit,

Forever Three in One;

For as in the beginning,

Is now, shall ever be,

God's triune name resounding

Through all eternity.

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benedicamus and Benediction

P: Let us bless the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Hark, the Voice of Jesus Crying (LSB 826)

Hark, the voice of Jesus crying,

“Who will go and work today?

Fields are white and harvests waiting—

Who will bear the sheaves away?”

Loud and long the Master calleth;

Rich reward He offers thee.

Who will answer, gladly saying,

“Here am I, send me, send me”?

If you cannot speak like angels,

If you cannot preach like Paul,

You can tell the love of Jesus,

You can say He died for all.

If you cannot rouse the wicked

With the judgment’s dread alarms,

You can lead the little children

To the Savior’s waiting arms.

If you cannot be a watchman,

Standing high on Zion’s wall,

Pointing out the path to heaven,

Off’ring life and peace to all,

With your prayers and with your bounties

You can do what God commands;

You can be like faithful Aaron,

Holding up the prophet’s hands.

Let none hear you idly saying,

“There is nothing I can do,”

While the multitudes are dying

And the Master calls for you.

Take the task He gives you gladly,

Let His work your pleasure be;

Answer quickly when He calleth,

“Here am I, send me, send me!”
