Pastor Scott's Message
In the Gospels, Caesar Augustus is a character. As the reader, we never see him in the flesh or hear him speak a line but he is ever present. In the beginning of Luke it says, "In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered." From that point on we have a contrast between King Caesar and King Jesus.
On Palm Sunday, the crowds reacted to Jesus like he was Caesar. They cheered him like he was a conquering hero returned from war. They quoted ancient texts to honor him. They bowed to him as King. The crowds wanted Jesus to know where they stood. He was worthy to be their King.
But Jesus is not like Caesar in so many ways. He did not come to conquer land. He did not ride on a war horse but a donkey. His kingdom is not visible with banners and soldiers. It is invisible with spirit and faith. He will defeat his enemies but not with a sword. He will vanquish sin, death and the devil through his own body. Our King must die so that we may live.
Come to worship a different kind of King this Palm Sunday. He may not be all that the world expects. But he surely is the Son of God.
