Hope While Living In a Broken World - by Joel Hempel

Are you as disturbed and disheartened as I am with all of the evil and violence in the world? I know Scripture predicted wars and awful pain until the end of time. I have been inclined not to look at it, but then I think of the people suffering through it and conclude that I need to see the pain, so I don’t give up on praying for their relief and the interruption of evil’s intentions.

For those who believe in God and are living amid daily violence in the war zones around the world or nearby in their own home, I can only imagine what is on their lips as they look to God for salvation – now, in this life.

In what do we find strength and courage in times of trauma and overwhelming odds? Hope is one of the spiritual resources God offers to combat evil and strengthen our walk through the storm.

But what good is hope?

Biblical, Christian hope is not wishful thinking. It is confident expectation originating from and securely attached to God’s love and faithfulness (see Romans 5:5; Hebrews 10:23). Love-generated hope creates ever-growing faith and trust within us. And the stronger our faith in Christ our Savior, the more boldly we trust in God’s promises, the less we will be torn apart and tossed around by evil’s personal and global attacks. As St. Paul wrote to the Romans, “Hope [in Jesus Christ and his promises] will not put us to shame.”

Hope is our solid foundation. We can build our future on it!

If I say I hope I beat Marcia in Rummikub tonight, at best, I have a 50-50 chance that wishful thought will come true. But if I say I hope God will forgive my doubt and strengthen me for what lies ahead, I am confident he will. How can I know that to be true? Read on!

I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world (John 16:33).

At different times, evil in the world and personal anguish will traumatize all of us. Having experienced such trauma himself, Jesus gets it. But Jesus also gets the last word in our life now and for eternity. That last word? Hope! Hope in Jesus will not disappoint us. Hope in Jesus will get us through and out of whatever depressing or oppressive experience threatens to overwhelm us.

Hope rooted in Christ WILL upHOLD us!

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Thy Strong Word (LSB 578, verses 1-3)

Thy strong word did cleave the darkness;

At Thy speaking it was done.

For created light we thank Thee,

While Thine ordered seasons run.

Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness,

Dark as night and deep as death,

Broke the light of Thy salvation,

Breathed Thine own life-breathing breath.

Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous;

Bright with Thine own holiness,

Glorious now, we press toward glory,

And our lives our hopes confess.

Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Opening SentencesZephaniah 1:7b; 1 Thessalonians 5:11; Matthew 25:29a

P: The LORD has prepared a sacrifice

C: and consecrated His guests.

P: Encourage one another

C: and build one another up.

P: To everyone who has will more be given,

C: and he will have an abundance.

Confession and Absolution1 John 1:8–9; Psalm 90:17

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

P: Let us in all honesty hear His Word again and confess our sins.

P: The Lord has consecrated His guests,

C: but we have been more attentive to the things of this world. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us.

P: Build one another up,

C: but we are used to the darkness of this world and fear His coming like a thief in the night. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us.

P: To everyone who has will more be given,

C: but we seldom recognize the abilities and opportunities He has given. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us.

P: The favor of the Lord is on you! Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P: Hear my prayer, O LORD; give ear to my pleas for mercy! In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!

C: Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.

P: I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands.

C: I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.

P: Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!

C: For your name’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life! In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Hear my prayer, O LORD; give ear to my pleas for mercy! In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, Your Son died for the sins of the whole world.

C: Embolden us to share His love with everyone we meet until the day we hear His gracious blessing, “Well done, good and faithful servant”;

P: through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingZephaniah 1:7–16

Be silent before the Lord GOD! For the day of the LORD is near; the LORD has prepared a sacrifice and consecrated his guests. And on the day of the LORD’s sacrifice—“I will punish the officials and the king’s sons and all who array themselves in foreign attire. On that day I will punish everyone who leaps over the threshold, and those who fill their master’s house with violence and fraud.

“On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, a loud crash from the hills. Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar! For all the traders are no more; all who weigh out silver are cut off. At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are complacent, those who say in their hearts, ‘The LORD will not do good, nor will he do ill.’ Their goods shall be plundered, and their houses laid waste. Though they build houses, they shall not inhabit them; though they plant vineyards, they shall not drink wine from them.” The great day of the LORD is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there. A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 2 Corinthians 4:7–18

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMatthew 25:14-30

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Brothers and Sisters in Christ (AGPS 78)

Sing Alleluia! Amen!

Let your prayers and your praises ascend.

Lift up your voices and sing

To our Lord God, our Savior and King!

Here brought together by grace,

We are gathered as friends in this place.

And assembled as one,

In the name of the Son,

Lifting hearts, lifting hands,

Celebrating as friends

And proclaiming the Lord

All our praises afford.

We are brothers and sisters in Christ.

Children’s Message – Janet Leet

Hymn of the Day – Thy Strong Word (LSB 578, verses 4-6)

From the cross Thy wisdom shining

Breaketh forth in conqu’ring might;

From the cross forever beameth

All Thy bright redeeming light.

Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send!

Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Give us lips to sing Thy glory,

Tongues Thy mercy to proclaim,

Throats that shout the hope that fills us,

Mouths to speak Thy holy name.

Alleluia, alleluia! May the light which Thou dost send

Fill our songs with alleluias, Alleluias without end!

God the Father, light-creator,

To Thee laud and honor be.

To Thee, Light of Light begotten,

Praise be sung eternally.

Holy Spirit, light-revealer, glory, glory be to Thee.

Mortals, angels, now and ever praise the holy Trinity!

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He, blessed is He,

Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Jesus, Greatest at the Table

Jesus, greatest at the table,

The almighty Son of Man,

Laid aside His outer clothing,

Poured some water in a pan;

As the Twelve lay, hushed in silence,

He the servant’s task began.

Marvel how their Lord and teacher

Gently taught them not to vie

As He humbly knelt before them,

Dusty feet to wash and dry,

By His tender touch expressing

True compassion from on high.

Jesus took the role of servant

When upon that gruesome span,

For all human sin He suffered

As a vile and loathsome man;

On the cross poured out like water

To fulfill the Father’s plan.

Can we fathom such deep mercy?

Do we see what God has done?

Who can grasp this great reversal:

Love that gives His only Son?

Christ, the sinless for the sinners,

For the many dies the One.

Jesus gave to His disciples

A commandment that was new:

“Show My love to one another,

Do as I have done for you;

All the world will know you love Me

As you love each other too.”

Blessing

Post-Communion Thanksgiving

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift,

C: and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another;

C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – We Shall Overcome (AGPS 259)

We shall overcome, we shall overcome,

We shall overcome someday;

Oh, if in our hearts we do believe,

We shall overcome someday.

We’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand,

We’ll walk hand in hand someday.

Oh, if in our hearts we do believe,

We’ll walk hand in hand someday.

We shall all have peace, we shall all have peace,

We shall all have peace someday.

Oh, if in our hearts we do believe,

We shall all have peace someday.

We are not afraid, we are not afraid,

We are not afraid this day.

Oh, if in our hearts we do believe,

We are not afraid this day.

God is on our side, God is on our side,

God is on our side this day.

Oh, if in our hearts we do believe,

God is on our side this day.
