Greeting and Welcome

Hymn of InvocationI Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry

I was there to hear your borning cry,
I’ll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized,
To see your life unfold.
I was there when you were but a child,
With a faith to suit you well;
I’ll be there in case you wander off
And find where demons dwell.

When you found the wonder of the Word,
I was there to cheer you on;
You were raised to praise the living God,
To whom you now belong.
Should you find someone to share your time
And you join your hearts as one,
I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme
From dusk till rising sun.

In the middle ages of your life,
Not too old, no longer young,
I’ll be there to guide you through the night,
Complete what I’ve begun.
When the evening gently closes in
And you shut your weary eyes,
I’ll be there as I have always been
With just one more surprise.

I was there to hear your borning cry,
I’ll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized,
To see your life unfold.

Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution
P:  Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C:  who made heaven and earth.
P:  I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C:  and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
P:  In the today’s Epistle, Paul reminds us that “the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Let us therefore go to our gracious heavenly Father, confessing our sins.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P:  In the Old Testament Reading, God promises, “My word . . . shall not return to Me empty; it shall accomplish . . . and shall succeed.”
C:  But we do not trust You in all things. We have sinned in thought, word, and deed. Forgive us, heavenly Father.
P:  Then God tells us, “You shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace.”
C:  But we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. Hear us, free us, and lead us in paths pleasing to You, heavenly Father.
P:  In the Gospel, our Lord explains that “the one who hears the word and understands it . . . bears fruit.” By the grace of God, we believe and understand that Jesus, the Word of God in the flesh, succeeded in destroying death and rising victorious for us. For His sake, God forgives us and uses us to bear fruit for Him. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. May the Word planted inside you produce a great harvest for our gracious Lord.
C:  Amen. Thanks be to God!

Salutation and Collect of the Day
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Let us pray. Gracious God, who has given us this good earth in which to live and who sends rain and sun to cause plants to produce fruit and grain for harvest, continue to send Your life-giving Word to us so that we resist the cares of this world and return to You a harvest of new sons and daughters, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

First ReadingActs 20:1-12
After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia. When he had gone through those regions and had given them much encouragement, he came to Greece. There he spent three months, and when a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. Sopater the Berean, son of Pyrrhus, accompanied him; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus. These went on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas, but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we came to them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days.
On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed. And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted.
P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 8:12-17
 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.
The Baptism of Jacob Michael Grossenheider

Greeting and Prayer
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: Amen.
P: By water and the Spirit we share Christ's death.
C: And through his resurrection we have new life.
P: O almighty and merciful God, we thank and praise you that you extend your Family through this means of grace and that you have called Jacob Michael Grossenheider to be your child through the water of Holy Baptism and the power of your Word. We humbly pray that you would keep him always aware of this covenant of love that you have made with him and nurture the seed of faith you are planting in his heart, that he may faithfully grow to lead a life pleasing to you and, finally, with all your saints obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.

Blessing
P: Jacob Michael Grossenheider, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead + and upon your heart + as a sign, symbol and seal of God's love for you.

Matthew 28:18-20
Our Lord commanded baptism, saying to his disciples in the last chapter of Matthew, "All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age."

Mark 10:13-16
Hear also his invitation, "People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them."

Exhortation to Sponsors
P:   It is your task to confess with the whole Christian Church our faith in the Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - in whose name he is to be baptized. Moreover, you are at all times to remember him in your prayers, call to his attention his baptism and, as much as you are able, to lend your counsel and support that he may be nurtured in the true knowledge and love of God through Jesus Christ, that he may grow in faith and witness for as long as he lives. This, then, you intend gladly and willingly to do?
Sponsors:  Yes, with the help of God.
P:   May God enable you to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with his grace fulfill what we are not able to do.

Confession of Faith
P:   Parents, in obedience to Christ's command and with faith in his promises, you have presented Jacob here today to receive Holy Baptism and all the gifts that God conveys through it. On his behalf, therefore, I ask you to join with me and the rest of this congregation in the confession of the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil, all his works and all his ways?
C: I do renounce him.

P: Do you believe in God the Father?
C: Yes, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son?
C: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God The Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and dead.

P: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
C: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Rite of Baptism
P: Who brings this child to be baptized?
Parents: We do, his father and mother.
P: And what have you named him?
Parents: Jacob Michael Grossenheider
P: Jacob Michael Grossenheider, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with his grace to life everlasting.
Jacob, peace be with you. Amen.

Presentation of Baptismal Candle
P: Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end.

Presentation to the Congregation
Jacob Michael Grossenheider, infant son of Daniel and Tiffiani (Palmer) Grossenheider, was born on November 5, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Prayer
Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted Jacob the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as he has now become Your child, You would keep him in his baptismal grace, that according to Your good pleasure he may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Holy Gospel – Matthew 13:1–9, 18–23
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the thirteenth chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.

 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”
 “Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Lord’s Prayer
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn – I Know That My Redeemer Lives (LSB 461, verses 1-2)

I know that my Redeemer lives;
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives, my everliving head.

He lives triumphant from the grave;
He lives eternally to save;
He lives all-glorious in the sky;
He lives exalted there on high.

Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
July 9, 2020
I’d like to thank Glendale Lutheran church for the unexpected and generous gift for my 25th anniversary in ministry. The monetary gift and the plane tickets will be used for our family to go to London next summer. You have supported me and my family wonderfully in our three years here. Your love for us has made this home.

That wasn’t the only gift I received. My precious wife, Ann, presented me with an album full of memories from our previous six churches. She contacted them all in January and asked them for letters of remembrance. I was an associate pastor at Alive in Christ in Columbia, Missouri, a vicar at First Lutheran in Manhattan Beach, CA, a seminary field worker at Resurrection in Sunset Hills, a Director of Christian Education at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Santa Maria, CA, a religion teacher at Lutheran high of San Diego and a DCE at St. Paul’s in Pacific Beach, CA. The time goes by fast, but these letters made me stop and remember how God connected us to his people at every stop.

I had youth group kids who now have families of their own contact me. They don’t recall the Bible studies I taught but they appreciated how I treated them with patience, respect and humor. I heard from previous pastors who were instrumental in my journey. Even my college roommate sent a video. He came to faith during our year together. We haven’t seen each other since but he wanted me to know how much that year meant to him and his family. Ann even got lifelong friends to send their greetings. It’s almost like I got to read my eulogies without a funeral.

The most precious letters were from Ann, Grace and Faith. They wrote beautiful words of encouragement that every man should hear from his family. The overwhelming feeling I am left with is gratitude to God. I know there are pastors that have a rough time and I’ve even experienced a season of it myself in the past. But overall life in ministry has blessed me immensely. I’ve received so much more than I’ve given. I think you know I’m a normal guy with normal abilities. Yet God has used me to further his kingdom. It’s been a blast. Here’s to another twenty five years working for the Lord.

Two Major Projects Underway
As a result of member approvals at our recent voters’ meeting, we are able to actively move forward with two major projects.

One: We are evaluating new chandeliers for our sanctuary. These will replace the 40 year old design currently in place, take advantage of new lighting technology, return us to the original architectural design and dramatically improve the “brightness” in our worship space. (This is the first major step in upgrading all the aging and dated lighting fixtures that support and enhance our worship experience.) Bequest funds have been authorized to underwrite this effort but additional funds are being solicited to support the estimated $15,000 cost. Donations and/or memorials can be made by designating “Lighting” on your contribution.

Two: We have let a contract to do major maintenance on the large stained glass windows on the south wall of the sanctuary. Over the 50 plus years that these major installations have been in place caulking has deteriorated, some panes have developed cracks, and the glass itself has become quite dirty both inside and out. There is a suspicion that this deterioration is also the source of some water leaks during heavy weather. The exterior joints of the glass will be rejuvenated and again be waterproofed. The completed project will return the stained glass to its original brightness. We are hoping to get on the vendor’s schedule by this fall. Again, the voters have authorized bequest funds currently in hand to underwrite the $25,800 cost. However, members who have a heart to support this project can designate “Stained Glass” on your donation/memorial.
