Failure is Not an Option - article by Joel Hempel

Well, actually, it is. No one gets to walk this earth without experiencing countless occasions of failing to do what is needed, what is expected, or what any reasonable person would agree is the right thing to do. People mess up! I hate it when I fail, but I must admit I’m good at it.

For example, yesterday, I failed my family. The story is too long to give you all the details, but let me say that yesterday (Sunday), I had the opportunity to say yes to hosting our out-of-town family, and I failed to do so. I should have first consulted with Marcia, but I didn’t. I should have slowed down my first impulse and prayed about it. I did not. Once I recognized the error of my ways, I should have made right what I screwed up. I did not.

There are lots of reasons for not inviting them, I tell myself. Some of them are reasonable. But the bottom line, I failed. Admittedly, what I did – or failed to do – did not rise to the level of sin, but it was unintentionally hurtful. However, I do need to make a correction.

What I failed to do is not the bottom line.

As disappointing as it is, failing to do the right thing or failing to be the Christian we want to be is not the end. And it does not define us. What does define us is our identity as Christians, as forgiven sons and daughters of God, as friends of Jesus who are called to be caring, hospitable, and generous toward others. But when we forget who we are or are caught up in our neediness, thankfully, we have a God who is quick to forgive (see Psalm 86:3-7).

Though our God is quick to forgive, we need to be equally quick to receive our Lord’s forgiveness. I know I tend to linger in the shame of failure. That is not God’s desire for us. In his excellent book entitled Forgive, Timothy Keller includes a quote attributed to Dutch writer Corrie ten Boom: “When God throws our sins into the deepest sea, he puts up a sign, ‘No fishing!’”

Let’s face it, for mature Christians, failing to love as Jesus has loved us is painful. When we let down people we care about, when we are slow to attend to others in need, our Lord wants us to apologize, to seek healing with the one offended. But then, we are to settle into the ever-present mercy of God.

Hymn of Invocation – Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing (LSB 475)

Good Christian friends, rejoice and sing!

Now is the triumph of our King!

To all the world glad news we bring:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

The Lord of life is ris’n this day;

Bring flow’rs of song to strew His way;

Let all the world rejoice and say:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Praise we in songs of victory

That love, that life which cannot die,

And sing with hearts uplifted high:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Your name we bless, O risen Lord,

And sing today with one accord

The life laid down, the life restored:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

+ Preparation +

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P: For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

C: When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

P: In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

C: In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise,

P: in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?

All:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory be to God on high;

and on earth peace goodwill toward men.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee,

we worship Thee, we glorify Thee,

we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.

O Lord God, heavenly King,

God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

that takest away the sin of the world,

have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sin of the world,

receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,

have mercy upon us.

For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.

Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,

art most high in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P: Let us pray. O God, because Your abiding presence always goes with us, keep us aware of Your daily mercies that we may live secure and content in Your eternal love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading2 Samuel 11:2–15

It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”

So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.” Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 6:12–23

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Baptism

The Greeting and Prayer

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

Amen.

By water and the Spirit we share Christ’s death.

And through his resurrection we have new life.

O almighty and merciful God, we thank and praise you that you extend your Family through this means of grace and that you have called Parker Lee Johnson to be your child through the water of Holy Baptism and the power of your Word. We humbly pray that you would keep him always aware of this covenant of love that you have made with him and nurture the seed of faith you are planting in his heart, that he may faithfully grow to lead a life pleasing to you and, finally, with all your saints obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

The Blessing

Parker Lee Johnson, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead + and upon your heart + as a sign, symbol and seal of God's love for you.

The Lessons

Our Lord commanded baptism, saying to his disciples in the last chapter of Matthew, "All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)

Hear also his invitation, "People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them." (Mark 10:13-16)

The Confession of Faith

Parents, in obedience to Christ's command and with faith in his promises, you have presented Parker here today to receive Holy Baptism and all the gifts that God conveys through it. On his behalf, therefore, I ask you to join with me and the rest of this congregation in the confession of the faith in which we baptize.

Do you renounce the devil, all his works and all his ways?

I do renounce him.

Do you believe in God the Father?

Yes, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son?

Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

The Rite of Baptism

Who brings this child to be baptized?

We do, his father and mother.

And what have you named him?

Parker Lee Johnson

Parker Lee Johnson, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with his grace to life everlasting.

Parker, peace be with you. Amen.

Presentation of Baptismal Candle

Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end.

Presentation to the Congregation

Parker Lee Johnson, son of Justin & Kelsey Johnson, born on February 14, 2022 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Closing Prayer

Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted Parker the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as he has now become Your child, You would keep him in his baptismal grace, that according to Your good pleasure he may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Holy GospelMatthew 10:5a, 21-33

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter.

C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans….

“Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Children’s Hymn – Create in Me

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from Thy presence;

and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation;

and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen.

Hymn of the Day – Take My Life and Let It Be (LSB 783)

Take my life and let it be

Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;

Take my moments and my days,

Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands and let them move

At the impulse of Thy love;

Take my feet and let them be

Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice and let me sing

Always, only for my King;

Take my lips and let them be

Filled with messages from Thee.

Take my silver and my gold,

Not a mite would I withhold;

Take my intellect and use

Ev’ry pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will and make it Thine,

It shall be no longer mine;

Take my heart, it is Thine own,

It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love, my Lord, I pour

At Thy feet its treasure store;

Take myself, and I will be

Ever, only, all for Thee.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up unto the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

C: It is meet and right so to do.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He, blessed is He,

blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

    In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us (LSB 851)

Lord of glory, You have bought us

With Your lifeblood as the price,

Never grudging for the lost ones

That tremendous sacrifice;

And with that have freely given

Blessings countless as the sand

To the_unthankful and the evil

With Your own unsparing hand.

Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to give You

Gladly, freely of Your own.

With the sunshine of Your goodness

Melt our thankless hearts of stone

Till our cold and selfish natures,

Warmed by You, at length believe

That more happy and more blessed

’Tis to give than to receive.

Wondrous honor You have given

To our humblest charity

In Your own mysterious sentence,

“You have done it all to Me.”

Can it be, O gracious Master,

That You deign for alms to sue,

Saying by Your poor and needy,

“Give as I have giv’n to you”?

Lord of glory, You have bought us

With Your lifeblood as the price,

Never grudging for the lost ones

That tremendous sacrifice.

Give us faith to trust You boldly,

Hope, to stay our souls on You;

But, oh, best of all Your graces,

With Your love our love renew.
