Pastor Biermann's Message
This past week I spent a little more time than usual caring for three of our grandchildren as their parents were away for a few days. Certainly, it's work--there are routines to follow, meals to clean up, baths to give, and time to fill with entertaining things. But, as we all know (it's a basic tenet found in the "laws of grandparenting"), taking care of the grandchildren is also a delight. And, it is. It's always a treat to interact with children who are exploring and newly comprehending their world with often unique and sometimes profound insights into the ways of things; but, when those children are your own progeny, it is all so much better. So, I do my grandfather vocation with relish. That work ranks rather high on my vocational hierarchy.

You all have one of those, of course. Every single person alive exists in the context of vocations. Vocations are the callings or the appointed responsibilities that come from God, given for the purpose of the smooth functioning of his world. Basically, vocations are just the tasks that each person is to carry out for the sake of all the other creatures in the world. Clearly, vocations are so much more than whatever a person happens to do to gain financial means to support life. Vocations are grounded in the most fundamental relationship that serves the creation: the bond between husband and wife and the children that spring from that union. Families are the vital key. So, the vocations that support and enhance families are the first and most essential, and the hierarchy takes shape accordingly...at least it should.

The sad truth, though, is that people too often establish vocational hierarchies that are not in tune with God's design and plan. These wrongly ordered hierarchies are easy to spot when a person is living only for himself and determining every choice by the criteria of self-interest. But, hierarchies can also be wrongly ordered in ways that may well appear altogether noble and pious. So, a businessman leaves home before his children rise, returns home after they are in bed, and with his textbook work ethic, his career prospers. And a college student becomes engrossed in advocating for wetlands on campus and spends all her hours planning, organizing, persuading and protesting, and has no time left for homework or class. And a pastor with great solemnity informs his family that since God must come first, the priority in his life will be his parish and the work he has to do there. Each of the three is doing something right and would likely receive the praise and admiration of many of their peers. But each is badly out of step with God's plan, and each is guilty of following a vocational hierarchy that is quite wrongly ordered.

As you consider the various vocational responsibilities that define your life, weight each one in the light of God's standards and priorities. Invest in the things that God would have you invest in: the work and the tasks that are given uniquely to you, the things that only you are placed to do. Every vocation matters, of course, but some matter more than others. As for me, I'll keep on spending some of my best hours with my grandchildren--but, even they don't come in first place. My wife gets that spot. And, then behind my family, everything else has its place: students, teaching, friends, preaching, neighbors, strangers and my cat...more or less in that order. Every vocation comes from God, every one has its responsibilities and its joys, and its appropriate place in the hierarchy. Take a fresh look at your vocations, and your hierarchy.
Pastor Scott Jonas
We announce with great thanksgiving to God that Pastor Jonas has accepted the divine call to serve as Glendale Lutheran Church's Pastor.  At this point, we have tentatively planned on him joining our congregation on August 14, 2017, with a potential installation on August 27, 2017, depending on direction the District provides.  We look forward with anticipation to this next chapter knowing God has continued to provide for us as a Church family.  Thanks be to God!
Food Drive
Please help fill our food cart during the next three Sundays. The food will be taken to Kirkcare storage for distribution. As a community and country, we have abundant food, yet there are some in our midst who do without. Thanks much!
