From Pressure to Promise - article by Joel Hempel

There are a number of Scripture passages I find challenging. Among them are these:

. . . Repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his [Jesus] name to all nations beginning in Jerusalem. Luke 24:47, Matthew 9:35-38

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1Peter 3:15

What’s my problem with these perfectly good passages? As Princeton Professor C. Clinton Black put it in an online article, They’re unnerving! They apply a lot of pressure to any Christian – like me, and I assume you – who wants to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. It’s one thing to let our actions speak for themselves. That’s challenging enough! It’s far more difficult to decide to step out in faith and be intentional witnesses with Gospel words – words that lift up Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

You may have your own reasons for not speaking up when you have the opportunity to share the Gospel with someone God brings across your path, but for an introvert like me, I’d just as soon not say anything most of the time. Thankfully, from my introverted perspective, few of us are called to be missionaries and “proclaim his name to all nations.” But all of us are called into service as witnesses for Christ.

Thank God that passages like the ones above not only apply pressure but also give a promise with the power of the Holy Spirit backing it up:

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8

Then, there is this incredible passage given originally to the apostles: When they arrest you, don’t worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you (Matthew 10:19-20 NIV). Unlike the original twelve disciples who were persecuted for proclaiming the Gospel, we thank God we live in a country with freedom of religion. But the threat of arrest still exists. Culture tries to arrest us with its anti-Christian philosophies and values. The fear of offending someone and being rejected, or the anxiety of not being ready with the most helpful words, threatens arrest.

The discomfort of being counterculture and the threat of being locked up by our fears are real.

Far more real, though, is this: In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world (John 16:33). The Spirit of Christ has our back! Culture can threaten but cannot arrest the hearts of Jesus-followers who trust in God and his promises.

We can be God’s intentional witnesses, His front line of offense. Let us earnestly pray for the Spirit of Christ to lead us to those open to hearing and seeing the Gospel, who is Jesus.

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

C: My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

P: The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.

C: The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

P: The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

C: The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?

C: My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, haver mercy upon us.

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory be to God on High,

and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee.

we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.

O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;

O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.

Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,

art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, during His earthly ministry Your Son Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. By the healing medicine of the Word and Sacraments pour into our hearts such love toward You that we may live eternally; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading2 Kings 21:10-18

And the LORD said by his servants the prophets, “Because Manasseh king of Judah has committed these abominations and has done things more evil than all that the Amorites did, who were before him, and has made Judah also to sin with his idols, therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Jerusalem and Judah such disaster that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria, and the plumb line of the house of Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down. And I will forsake the remnant of my heritage and give them into the hand of their enemies, and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies, because they have done what is evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even to this day.”

Moreover, Manasseh shed very much innocent blood, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another, besides the sin that he made Judah to sin so that they did what was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh and all that he did, and the sin that he committed, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? And Manasseh slept with his fathers and was buried in the garden of his house, in the garden of Uzza, and Amon his son reigned in his place.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle2 Corinthians 8:1–9, 13–15

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own free will, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.

I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich…I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel Mark 5:21-43

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fifth chapter.

C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up unto the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

C: It is meet and right so to do.

P: It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He, blessed is He,

blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

have mercy upon us.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

have mercy upon us.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

grant us Thy peace. Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing (LSB 633, verses 1-5)

At the Lamb’s high feast we sing

Praise to our victorious King,

Who has washed us in the tide

Flowing from His piercèd side. Alleluia!

Praise we Him, whose love divine

Gives His sacred blood for wine,

Gives His body for the feast—

Christ the victim, Christ the priest. Alleluia!

Where the paschal blood is poured,

Death’s dread angel sheathes the sword;

Israel’s hosts triumphant go

Through the wave that drowns the foe. Alleluia!

Praise we Christ, whose blood was shed,

Paschal victim, paschal bread;

With sincerity and love

Eat we manna from above. Alleluia!

Mighty Victim from the sky,

Hell’s fierce pow’rs beneath You lie;

You have conquered in the fight,

You have brought us life and light. Alleluia!

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant

depart in peace according to Thy word,

for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,

which Thou has prepared before

the face of all people,

a light to lighten the Gentiles

and the glory of Thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Closing Hymn – Before You, Lord, We Bow (LSB 966)

Before You, Lord, we bow,

Our God who reigns above

And rules the world below,

Boundless in pow’r and love.

Our thanks we bring in joy and praise,

Our hearts we raise to You, our King!

The nation You have blest

May well Your love declare,

From foes and fears at rest,

Protected by Your care.

For this bright day, for this fair land—

Gifts of Your hand—our thanks we pay.

May ev’ry mountain height,

Each vale and forest green,

Shine in Your Word’s pure light,

And its rich fruits be seen!

May ev’ry tongue be tuned to praise

And join to raise a grateful song.

Earth, hear your Maker’s voice;

Your great Redeemer own;

Believe, obey, rejoice,

And worship Him alone.

Cast down your pride, your sin deplore,

And bow before the Crucified.

And when in pow’r He comes,

Oh, may our native land

From all its rending tombs

Send forth a glorious band,

A countless throng, with joy to sing

To heav’n’s high King salvation’s song!
