What Don't You Want to Hear from Jesus? - article by Joel Hempel

Can you imagine what Martha felt like when she heard from Jesus, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary, Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her”? Or what about when Jesus rebuked Peter: “Get behind me, Satan! You are not setting your mind on the things of God but on the things of man”?

Most of us don’t like to be corrected. It was bad enough when we misbehaved as kids, and our parents or teachers had to discipline us. Back in the seventh grade, when there was widespread support for corporal punishment, I must have said something that greatly offended the teacher. Mr. G. made a beeline to my desk, grabbed my face, and squeezed my cheeks together with his fingers. By today’s standards, even those schools that support corporal punishment would find what Mr. G handed out inexcusable.

We can be confident that Jesus’ discipline of us is never out of control, and it is always motivated by love and measured by what he determines we need. If you have time, look at the stories about how Jesus lovingly confronted the woman at the well (John 4:16-18), the rich, young ruler (Mark 10:21), and doubting Thomas (John 20:27). Even with the Pharisees, he is not mean-spirited or seeking to get even. He uses calculated toughness to get their attention and cut through their defenses. We should expect nothing less from our God who cares about us.

What are you not dealing with in your life? What sinful behavior are you nursing? Who are you not forgiving, or to whom do you owe an apology? Jesus is not that friend who will only say nice things to you or is afraid of offending you. Our Lord is the truest of friends. If we refuse to live by his Word, expect to be chastised. He loves us and does not want us to continue down a path that leads to unnecessary pain.

In Hebrews 12, the author reminds us, “My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every child he receives.”

Seriously, how much do you like to suffer?

This is a good time to do an inventory of your life. Is any behavior, thinking, or corrupting emotion compromising your relationship with Jesus? If yes, is that the kind of stiff-arming of Jesus you want? This is what Jesus wants with us:

I have come to forgive you, complete you, fulfill your life, and create empowering intimacy (See John 3:16-17; 10:10; John 15:4-11; Philippians 4:12-13).

Birthday Bag Time

BIRTHDAY BAGS are now being gathered for the 8th year to help lighten the the birthdays of children who have much less than many of us do.

The Time line is from February 1-28. The fliers are on the table at the entrance to church. If you have any questions, feel free to call me. Many others have participated and would answer questions for you. Gathering the items to fill the bags can be difficult for some people who would be willing to either contribute parts of the gift bags or would be willing to contribute some money to help purchase the gifts. You can give any money by handing it to me at church or place it in an envelope in my mailbox.

Shortly after February 28, helpers from our church will load up their cars and deliver the Birthday Bags to Operation Food Search for distribution.

Thank you on behalf of the children who are surprised how other people cared for them.

Mortgage Update

Great news! Members have been regularly dedicating extra principal payments to the mortgage, and as a result our current balance is $457,304. In the last 12 months, the principal of the church’s mortgage has been reduced by over $150,000. This is due to a combination of our regular mortgage payments and these extra principal payments. We have made so much progress on our scheduled monthly payment obligations that currently almost 70% of our monthly payment ($5,750) goes directly to the reduction of principal. Check out the kiosk in the church lobby for the latest updates.”

The First Sunday in Lent

February 26, 2023

Sunday 9:15am

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Come to Calvary’s Holy Mountain (LSB 435)

Come to Calv’ry’s holy mountain,

Sinners, ruined by the fall;

Here a pure and healing fountain

Flows for you, for me, for all,

In a full, perpetual tide,

Opened when our Savior died.

Come in poverty and meanness,

Come defiled, without, within;

From infection and uncleanness,

From the leprosy of sin,

Wash your robes and make them white;

Ye shall walk with God in light.

Come in sorrow and contrition,

Wounded, impotent, and blind;

Here the guilty, free remission,

Here the troubled, peace may find.

Health this fountain will restore;

They that drink shall thirst no more.

They that drink shall live forever;

’Tis a soul-renewing flood.

God is faithful; God will never

Break His covenant of blood,

Signed when our Redeemer died,

Sealed when He was glorified.

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Opening Sentences Psalm 43:3–4, 5b; 61:1–2a

P:  Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer;

C:  from the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint.

P:  Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me;

C:  let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling!

P:  Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy,

C:  and I will praise You with the lyre, O God, my God.

P:  Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him,

C:  my salvation and my God.

Confession and Absolution

P:  Let us make confession of our sins to God, our heavenly Father.

C:  Merciful Father, our Lord and King, we are sinful people. We have inherited the legacy of original sin from our first parents, Adam and Eve, who disobeyed You in Eden. We are by nature sinful and unclean. In our daily lives we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. We sincerely repent of our sins and humbly ask Your grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to change what is sinful in our lives that each day we may grow in righteousness and godly living to the glory of Your holy name.

P:  God is gracious and forgiving. He has shown His merciful power in ways that renew, restore, and heal. To those who come to Him with repentant and contrite hearts, our Lord says, “Fear not!” and promises pardon, life, and salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be.

C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P:  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble;

        I will rescue him and honor him.

C:  With long life I will satisfy him

        and show him my salvation.

P:  Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—

        the Most High, who is my refuge—

C:  no evil shall be allowed to befall you,

        no plague come near your tent.

P:  For he will command his angels concerning you

        to guard you in all your ways.

C:  On their hands they will bear you up,

        lest you strike your foot against a stone.

P:  You will tread on the lion and the adder;

        the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

All:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

           as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble;

        I will rescue him and honor him.

C:  With long life I will satisfy him

        and show him my salvation.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, Your kingdom is everlasting and Your house is forever. Grant us grace to live with unfailing confidence, knowing that You have delivered us from sin and the power of death and Satan and have promised us a future life to come when we shall rejoice in Your eternal presence. This we ask for the sake of Jesus, the almighty Conqueror and our gracious Savior.

C:  Amen.

First ReadingGenesis 3:1–21

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 5:12–19

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelMatthew 14:22-33

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourteenth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Open Our Eyes (AGPS 195)

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus

To reach out and touch Him and say that we love Him.

Open our ears, Lord, help us to listen.

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. (Repeat)

Children’s Message – Stephanie Chapa

Hymn of the Day – Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (LSB 686)

Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise.

While the hope of endless glory

Fills my heart with joy and love,

Teach me ever to adore Thee;

May I still Thy goodness prove.

Here I raise my Ebenezer,

Hither by Thy help I’ve come;

And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,

Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wand’ring from the fold of God;

He, to rescue me from danger,

Interposed His precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be;

Let that grace now like a fetter

Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;

Prone to leave the God I love.

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,

Seal it for Thy courts above.

Oh, that day when freed from sinning,

I shall see Thy lovely face;

Clothed then in the blood-washed linen,

How I’ll sing Thy wondrous grace!

Come, my Lord, no longer tarry;

Take my ransom’d soul away;

Send Thine angels soon to carry

Me to realms of endless day.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praiseimH.

P:  It is truly good, right, and proper that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, King of the universe. Grant that we may live with firm confidence in the surety of Your truth and await with hope the abundant inheritance to come in Your glorious presence. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, forevermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. You have delivered us from the power of death and granted us the glorious destiny of eternal life in Your kingdom, which is forever. By the working of the Holy Spirit, grant that we with true thanksgiving receive the bread and wine, that is, the true body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as a guarantee of the salvation that He purchased for us through His innocent suffering and death. Pour out Your gracious Spirit upon us that we may live purposefully as Your faithful servants. Receive our prayers and thanksgivings, and grant us Your abiding peace. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord (LSB 637)

Draw near and take the body of the Lord,

And drink the holy blood for you outpoured;

Offered was He for greatest and for least,

Himself the victim and Himself the priest.

He who His saints in this world rules and shields,

To all believers life eternal yields;

With heav’nly bread He makes the hungry whole,

Gives living waters to the thirsting soul.

Come forward then with faithful hearts sincere,

And take the pledges of salvation here.

O Lord, our hearts with grateful thanks endow

As in this feast of love You bless us now.

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P:  Let us pray. O Lord God, heavenly Father, ruler of all things, despite our unworthiness, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come through this blessed Meal. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having now received this Holy Sacrament, we may with repentant joy continue our earthly pilgrimage until that time when we, receiving our gracious inheritance, are gathered into Your heavenly kingdom to share in Your blessings for all eternity. This we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C:  Amen.

Benediction

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – I Love to Tell the Story (AGPS 128, verses 1-3)

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,

Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true;

It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do. Refrain

Refrain:  I love to tell the story; ‘twill be my theme in glory

              To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, ‘tis pleasant to repeat

What seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.

I love to tell the story, for some have never heard

The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. Refrain

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best

Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

And when in scenes in glory I sing the new, new song,

‘Twill be then old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain

Welcome to Glendale Lutheran!

Ash Wednesday

February 22, 2023

6:30pm

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Abide with Me (LSB 878)

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.

The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

I need Thy presence ev’ry passing hour;

What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?

Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,

But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;

Tears for all woes, a heart for ev’ry plea.

Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;

Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;

Change and decay in all around I see;

O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless;

Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness.

Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still if Thou abide with me!

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;

Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies.

Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Confession and AbsolutionPsalm 51:1-9

P:  Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love;

C:  according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

P:  Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

C:  and cleanse me from my sin!

P:  For I know my transgressions,

C:  and my sin is ever before me.

P:  Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight,

C:  so that You may be justified in Your words and blameless in Your judgment.

P:  Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

C:  and in sin did my mother conceive me.

P:  Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being,

C:  and You teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

P:  Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

C:  wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

P:  Let me hear joy and gladness;

C:  let the bones that You have broken rejoice.

P:  Hide Your face from my sins,

C:  and blot out all my iniquities.

P:  On this day of ashes, we reflect on our sin-filled lives and seek God’s forgiveness.

Silence is observed.

P:  Most merciful Father in heaven,

C:  I am a sinner. I have no one to blame. The fault is my own. I deserve to be punished. I am truly sorry for my sins. Yet, for the sake of the loving sacrifice of Your only Son, Jesus Christ, I dare to beg for Your forgiveness. Remove from me the guilt of my sin and wash me that I may be whole again. Help me to be faithful today, tomorrow, and each day, by the power of Your Holy Spirit.

P:  Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy on us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Imposition of Ashes

You are invited to come forward for the imposition of ashes. The ashes are a sign of repentance, and we are marked with the sign of the cross as a sign of the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus.

The pastor places the ashes on the forehead of each person in the sign of the cross, saying:

P:  Remember that from dust you came and to dust you shall return.

After receiving the ashes, each person returns to his place in silence.

+ Word +

Prayer of the Day

P:  Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, You despise nothing You have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts that lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness we may, like David before us, receive from You full pardon and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

Old Testament ReadingJoel 2:12–19

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion; consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly; gather the people. Consecrate the congregation; assemble the elders; gather the children, even nursing infants. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her chamber. Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep and say, “Spare your people, O Lord, and make not your heritage a reproach, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’” Then the Lord became jealous for his land and had pity on his people. The Lord answered and said to his people, “Behold, I am sending to you grain, wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied; and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations.

Epistle 2 Corinthians 5:20—6:10

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.

Holy Gospel Matthew 13:10–17

Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

“‘You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive. For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

Hymn – Savior, When in Dust to Thee (LSB 419)

Savior, when in dust to Thee

Low we bow the_adoring knee;

When, repentant, to the skies

Scarce we lift our weeping eyes;

O, by all Thy pains and woe

Suffered once for us below,

Bending from Thy throne on high,

Hear our penitential cry!

By Thy helpless infant years,

By Thy life of want and tears,

By Thy days of deep distress

In the savage wilderness,

By the dread, mysterious hour

Of the_insulting tempter’s pow’r,

Turn, O turn a fav’ring eye;

Hear our penitential cry!

By Thine hour of dire despair,

By Thine agony of prayer,

By the cross, the nail, the thorn,

Piercing spear, and torturing scorn,

By the gloom that veiled the skies

O’er the dreadful sacrifice,

Listen to our humble sigh;

Hear our penitential cry!

By Thy deep expiring groan,

By the sad sepulchral stone,

By the vault whose dark abode

Held in vain the rising God,

O, from earth to heav’n restored,

Mighty, reascended Lord,

Bending from Thy throne on high,

Hear our penitential cry!

Sermon

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

P:  Let us pray. O Lord, our God, we acknowledge Your great goodness toward us and praise You for the mercy and grace that our eyes have seen, our ears have heard, and our hearts have known. We sincerely repent of the sins of this day and those in the past. Pardon our offenses, correct and reform what is lacking in us, and help us to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Inscribe Your law upon our hearts and equip us to serve You with holy and blameless lives. Grant that each day reminds us of the coming of the night when no one can work. In the emptiness of this present age, keep us united by a living faith through the power of Your Holy Spirit with Him who is the resurrection and the life, that we may escape the eternal bitter pains of condemnation. By Your Holy Spirit, bless the preaching of Your Word and the administration of Your Sacraments. Preserve these gifts to us and to all Christians. Guard and protect us from all dangers to body and soul. Grant that we may with faithful perseverance receive from You our sorrows as well as our joys, knowing that health and sickness, riches and poverty, and all things come by permission of Your fatherly hand. Keep this day under Your protective care all the sick and those who suffer, and preserve them with us, securely trusting in Your everlasting goodness and love, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution Hymn – Jesus, I Will Ponder Now (LSB 440)

Jesus, I will ponder now

On Your holy passion;

With Your Spirit me endow

For such meditation.

Grant that I in love and faith

May the image cherish

Of Your suff’ring, pain, and death

That I may not perish.

Make me see Your great distress,

Anguish, and affliction,

Bonds and stripes and wretchedness

And Your crucifixion;

Make me see how scourge and rod,

Spear and nails did wound You,

How for them You died, O God,

Who with thorns had crowned You.

Yet, O Lord, not thus alone

Make me see Your passion,

But its cause to me make known

And its termination.

Ah! I also and my sin

Wrought Your deep affliction;

This indeed the cause has been

Of Your crucifixion.

Grant that I Your passion view

With repentant grieving.

Let me not bring shame to You

By unholy living.

How could I refuse to shun

Ev’ry sinful pleasure

Since for me God’s only Son

Suffered without measure?

If my sins give me alarm

And my conscience grieve me,

Let Your cross my fear disarm;

Peace of conscience give me.

Help me see forgiveness won

By Your holy passion.

If for me He slays His Son,

God must have compassion!

Graciously my faith renew;

Help me bear my crosses,

Learning humbleness from You,

Peace mid pain and losses.

May I give You love for love!

Hear me, O my Savior,

That I may in heav’n above

Sing Your praise forever.

Blessing

Benedicamus

C:  Amen.

Hymn – O Lord, throughout These Forty Days (LSB 418)

O Lord, throughout these forty days

You prayed and kept the fast;

Inspire repentance for our sin,

And free us from our past.

You strove with Satan, and You won;

Your faithfulness endured;

Lend us Your nerve, Your skill and trust

In God’s eternal Word.

Though parched and hungry, yet You prayed

And fixed Your mind above;

So teach us to deny ourselves,

Since we have known God’s love.

Be with us through this season, Lord,

And all our earthly days,

That when the final Easter dawns,

We join in heaven’s praise.
