Pastor Biermann's Message
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida: that's the congregation where Nate, Erica, and Joy McCarty will be spending the next year. Nate, of course, has served as our congregation's field-worker for the last two years and Erica has taught in CCLS here at Glendale. But, this summer it is off to Florida-and yes, Bethlehem's building is less than a mile from the beach!

A year of vicarage serves a vital part in the education, and more importantly the formation of a pastor. During vicarage, students are able to participate directly and extensively in the life of a congregation working full-time in carrying out the tasks of a pastor, but under the supervision and guidance of a seasoned and capable pastor. After a year in Florida, it will be back to St. Louis for Nate's fourth year and then placement into the pastoral office.

Returning vicars are not sent back to their previous congregations for another year of resident field education. That means that this Sunday will be Nate's final time with us as our field-worker. Nate will be preaching at both services this weekend, and after worship on Sunday we will have some cake and a chance to offer our support to Nate and Erica as we send them on their way. While the idea behind assigning seminary students to local congregations as field-workers is centered on the learning and experience gained by the student, there is no doubt that the congregations also benefit. It would be good, then, and a great encouragement to the McCartys, that we express our thanks and support for them as they leave Glendale. A card would certainly be quite appropriate. Be sure to join us as we extend our prayers and seek God's blessings for the McCartys.
First Budget Reading
A final reminder that a first reading of the Leadership Council's proposed 2017/2018 budget will take place at 11:30am this coming Sunday, May 21, 2017, in the Family Life Center immediately following Bible Study. Please plan on attending so we can explain our budget items and answer any questions the Congregation may have on those items and on the spreadsheet we distributed comparing the current fiscal year budget with next year's proposed budget. A light lunch will also be provided during the meeting.

LCMS Mission Summit
The Missouri District will host its first Mission Summit from 9:00am to 4:00pm on June 3, 2017, at Concordia Seminary. The Summit is a collaboration with a number of LCMS entities to help support the district's witness and outreach emphasis, with speakers that include outreach leaders from LCMS Office of National Mission, Lutheran Hour Ministries, Concordia Seminary, and Lutheran Church Extension Fund. There will be topics that interest pastors and laity alike as well as topics geared for congregations in a variety of contexts such as rural, small town, urban, campus, and multi-ethnic. The full schedule and presenter list can be found at http://mo.lcms.org/mission-summit-2017/

The Leadership Council is looking for GLC members who are both willing and able to attend the Summit and asked that you please prayerfully consider doing so.  If you are guided to participate in this opportunity, please contact Andy Ryan at 314-398-7505 or by email at aryan@sandbergphoenix.com.
VBS Update
VBS is happening!!!  Thank you to all those who stepped up to help for the week of June 5th. We are busy planning and getting ready for it. On Sunday, please look for a poster-board as you enter the building, with a list of items we will need donated. There is a new limit on child registrations of 75, based on the amount of volunteers we have. Make sure to register your children before those spots are filled. I look forward to working with you all, as we share God's love with our neighbors.
Attention Graduates!
During the service on Sunday, June 4, the Elders and Leadership Council would like to recognize our recent member high school graduates and their parents as a part of the service. We are currently aware of the names of four: Mollie Schultz, Ben Lee, Kara Steele, and Tori Williams. If we have overlooked anyone, please contact Michelle in the church office by May 28 so your names may be included in the bulletin that day. College member graduates are welcome as well. Thank you!

Pastoral Care
If you need pastoral care for any reason, don't hesitate to contact the church office or one of the vacancy pastors directly. Pastor Biermann will be at the church on Monday and Thursday mornings most weeks, and Pastor Erkkinen is available on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
