Pastor Scott's Message
Last Sunday was my first leading worship here at Glendale Lutheran. It is a privilege to be your pastor and orchestrate the services. For the last three years I have been at a church with a contemporary service. It felt good to embrace the traditional divine service again, to hear the familiar music, and to speak the liturgy once again. It connects me to all of the churches of my past, Holy Cross in Concord, St. Paul's in Pacific Beach and Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Santa Maria, CA. I experienced the same worship then and now.

No matter how much I enjoy past worship experiences, I must realize that worship must never be static. God uses his word to form us into a new creation. Worship trains us to go out into the world to live a life of faith. This is exciting stuff. Being open to tweaks in worship helps us to see God and the world differently.

I appreciate everyone who followed my tweak to the Nicene Creed on Sunday. Same creed as always but this time I instructed the congregation to turn towards someone else and make eye contact when you say the words. I did this for several reasons. I want this church body to be ready for small changes around here. I'm a new pastor with new ideas. I figured one change to the service was a good start. I also believe that we need to understand the purpose of all parts of the service. The creed is a public confession. But it feels like a private confession when we look forward or at the ground as if we were praying to God. It takes strength to look someone in the eye and say what we believe. Finally, if we can share our faith face to face in the sanctuary then we can do it in our homes, and in the community.

That one little tweak may have been difficult for you. You can trust that I will never ask you to do something that I wouldn't do myself. Anything I ask you to do is because I believe it will strengthen your faith. I don't want to take away worship experiences that connect you to your past. But I want to add worship experiences that help you to stretch and grow through Jesus Christ.
Thank You!
Thank you to Steven Dowell, son of Bill and Marion Dowell, for the donation of a spinet piano received last weekend. Thanks also to those who risked hospitalization to safely get it here on Monday.
Bible Studies

Tuesday Morning Women's Bible Study
Tuesday morning's Women's Bible Study is starting September 12th at 9:15am.  We'll explore "What's Your Mission?" using DVD's and scripture as we study "Israel's Mission" through curriculum provided by Ray Vander Laan's series "That the World May Know."  Ray is a biblical archeologist whose teaching always gives fresh insight to scriptures.
If you are able to join us or just have questions please call Carol Froesel (822-1365) or Jeanne Clark (821-0522).

Thursday Evening Women's Bible Study
All women of Glendale are invited to participate in the Thursday evening Bible study which will begin September 7th. We meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00pm at the church. We will be using "Glory Days: Trusting in the God Who Fights for You" by Max Lucado, published in 2015. Each person may order the book as they wish--it may be available as an eBook, on Amazon, on a church book resource site, or certainly at Barnes and Noble. Please order as you wish and come ready to be encouraged by the Word and Love of our God. Please pick up your name tag on the way into class and please call (314-882-2033) or email (cathleenalbers@charter.net) Cathie Albers if you have questions or concerns. Looking forward to being with you all! God's blessings to all during this special time in our church as we welcome the Jonas' family.

Nifty Knitters and Clever Crocheters
Get your knitting needles and crochet hooks ready; the Nifty Knitters and Clever Crocheters are starting up again for the fall beginning September 7! We'll meet on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursdays of the month from 1:00pm-2:00pm in the corner room upstairs. All needle crafters are welcome!
Knoble Knotters
Knoble Knotters will meet on the second Thursday of each month at 1:30pm (please note the new time!). We need more knotters and could use someone to cut fabric into rectangles. There is fabric at church that could be taken home and cut. Come and help us while getting to visit with the other knotters. Hope to see you on those second Thursdays! If you have questions, call Shirley Williams at 968-0368.
Choir
Choir practice officially begins for the fall on Wednesday, September 13, at 7:00pm. Come join us and make a joyful noise to the Lord!
Hands on Kirkwood
Hands on Kirkwood, now in its seventh year, will again be collective coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, boots, and jeans for men, women, and children. Also being collected are children's books, toys, and diapers, plus new children's socks and underwear. There will be a collection box available at Glendale Lutheran Church until September 24. Please donate to this community event as you are able. Roslyn Croft from Harrison Avenue Missionary Baptist Church is coordinating this outreach service. Those who have a need will be invited to "shop" for their winter needs. We are also invited to join in sorting and setting up for the "Free Store" on Saturday, September 30, at 9:00am and throughout the following week at Kirkwood Baptist Church, 211 N. Woodlawn in Kirkwood. For more information, visit the website www.handsonkirkwood.org.

CCLS Carnival
Come one, come all! Join us for the CCLS Carnival Friday, September 29 from 5:00-10:00pm and Saturday, September 30 from 11:00am-9:00pm at the CCLS Kirkwood campus, 110 W. Woodbine Road. The Lutheran South Lancerettes are performing Saturday at 1:00pm, and kids from School of Rock will take the stage Saturday at 4:00pm. To buy discounted tickets, visit CCLS-stlouis.org before September 27. Questions? Email carnival@ccls-stlouis.org.

Kirkwood Meals on Wheels
We are looking for volunteers to help provide meals for your neighbors. You can help by packing the meal, delivering the meals or preparing supplies for the next day's delivery. One hour in the morning, once a week, is all that's required. If you would like to support this proud organization, we would like to talk to you. Please call Jane Nix at 314-822-0213 or send an email to jane_nix@yahoo.com.
