Pastor Biermann's Message
It's just days before Memorial Day. It's the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movies. It's the anniversary of my marriage to my remarkable wife of 32 years. And it's Ascension Day. There is no shortage of topics to consider on the date of May 25th. Common to them all, is the theme of remembering. Of course, that is a theme common to most of the important days that we celebrate in the calendar. But simply bringing to mind a past event or person is not the point, of course. That's not what it means to remember. No, when you remember you are putting your current and future life into the context of that memory. Remembering is the intentional act of shaping the present reality in the light and impact of the past and then living deliberately in that reality going forward. When I remember my wedding anniversary I do more than remember that wonderful day all those years ago; I remember the promises I made, I remember the blessings received, I remember the story I've lived with my wife, and I think about where that story is going next. And then I think and live accordingly. That's the point of remembering.

Not all remembering is equal, of course. Remembering Star Wars ranks pretty low--though there was a first date at the movies and an interesting intersection of May 25th events for me on that score. Remembering those who served sacrificially in their vocations in the military ranks much higher. But outranking them all--even eclipsing marriage--is the remembering of Ascension Day. Today, 40 days after the resurrection, our Lord ascended in glory to confirm his full divinity, to rule his world, to guide his church, to intercede for his people, to send his Spirit, to prepare a place for us, to await his triumphant return, to assure us that bodies are eternal. All of that is wrapped up in remembering Ascension Day. All of that has a profound impact on the reality of the present, and the unfolding of the future. So, whatever else you celebrate and remember today and over the weekend, put the Ascension where it belongs! Remember Jesus Christ: crucified, risen, and ascended.
LCMS Mission Summit
The Missouri District will host its first Mission Summit from 9:00am to 4:00pm on June 3, 2017, at Concordia Seminary. The Summit is a collaboration with a number of LCMS entities to help support the district's witness and outreach emphasis, with speakers that include outreach leaders from LCMS Office of National Mission, Lutheran Hour Ministries, Concordia Seminary, and Lutheran Church Extension Fund. There will be topics that interest pastors and laity alike as well as topics geared for congregations in a variety of contexts such as rural, small town, urban, campus, and multi-ethnic. The full schedule and presenter list can be found at http://mo.lcms.org/mission-summit-2017/

The Leadership Council is looking for GLC members who are both willing and able to attend the Summit and asked that you please prayerfully consider doing so.  If you are guided to participate in this opportunity, please contact Andy Ryan at 314-398-7505 or by email at aryan@sandbergphoenix.com.
VBS Update
VBS is happening!!!  Thank you to all those who stepped up to help for the week of June 5th. We are busy planning and getting ready for it. On Sunday, please look for a poster-board as you enter the building, with a list of items we will need donated. There is a new limit on child registrations of 75, based on the amount of volunteers we have. Make sure to register your children before those spots are filled. I look forward to working with you all, as we share God's love with our neighbors.
Attention Graduates!
During the service on Sunday, June 4, the Elders and Leadership Council would like to recognize our recent member high school graduates and their parents as a part of the service. We are currently aware of the names of four: Mollie Schultz, Ben Lee, Kara Steele, and Tori Williams. If we have overlooked anyone, please contact Michelle in the church office by May 28 so your names may be included in the bulletin that day. College member graduates are welcome as well. Thank you!
