Yesterday was the infamous ides of March-not a good day for Julius Caesar; tomorrow is of course St. Patrick's Day. While a commemoration of the patron saint of Ireland is obviously of some interest to those of Irish descent, it's actually a day when we can all pause and take stock of the legacy of Patrick. Like most great figures from history, a number of legends swirl around the figure of Patrick, but there is also much attributed to Patrick that is not only pious tale, but factual history. Sadly, there's no proof that he actually drove all the snakes off of the Emerald Isle. And, we're not even certain that he presented a trefoil shamrock as an illustration of the Trinity--though the likelihood of the latter far outweighs that of the former. What we do know for sure is that Patrick was a native of Britain, lived in the late 5th century, and was exceedingly concerned about the need for the people of Ireland to hear the gospel. Legend says that Patrick had been kidnapped and enslaved in Ireland as a teenager, true or not, he was the man who brought the gospel to the Irish, and established the church in their land. Considering the significant role of the church in the lives of the Irish people in the nearly 16 centuries since Patrick first proclaimed the gospel there, one can only marvel at the impact of this one man on an entire nation. It is that legacy of Patrick that is worthy of celebration and emulation. What Patrick did is what you can also do: he faithfully and persistently spoke the truth of God's gospel to those around him, and the impact of his truthful words was incalculable. Thus it is whenever the gospel is proclaimed with truth and conviction; God's Spirit takes those words and uses them to do his work. Enjoy the festivities of March 17th, then, but celebrate what matters: not green libations, shepherd's pie, and all things Irish, but a celebration of the power of the gospel and the difference one person can make.

Faith Formation Ministry Bible Class and Sunday School
Join us as we grow in our faith and knowledge of God's word.
Stewardship Sentence Exodus 17:3 - But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" Even the Israelites who saw miracles with their own eyes fall into unbelief and fear. From this distance we can see how foolish their worry is. How foolish will our worries appear from the distance of eternity? The Lord cared for them, and He will care for us.
| Easter Breakfast Our annual Easter Breakfast will be held Easter Sunday, April 16! This is a joyous occasion for our church and a wonderful meal together. Please see the sign-up poster on the kiosk to volunteer breakfast items. We appreciate your help!

Internet Broadcast of Worship Services AND Bible Class As you are aware, we have broadcast worship services for many years and, more recently, started to broadcast our Sunday morning Bible classes through our church web site. Thanks to the generous underwriting of members donating a specified amount to make these broadcasts "ad free," we have seen a dramatic increase in viewers. Sometimes during the time of the service we have had three or four viewers. Other services as well as Bible classes have received 14 to 20 views from the web site archives. Any past event can be viewed by accessing our church web site glendalelutheranchurch.org and then clicking on the orange button labeled "Live worship webcast". You will be immediately connected to a live broadcast, if the time is right, or immediately connected to all stored videos. Select and click on the one you would like to review and it will stream for you. (You will need Adobe Flash Player--a free download that many people already have on their computers.) Please consider a contribution to the $100.00 monthly cost of this outreach ministry |
