Kaputt! - article by Joel Hempel

Marcia’s second cousin, who lives in Germany with her family, tells me Kaputt means “broken, not working.” What is not working? Our old self! Es ist kaputt!

If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old is gone. Behold, the new has come.       2 Cor. 5:17

What is gone and broken forever? Our unforgiven state. Also gone is the inability to say no to whatever creates havoc in our lives and the lives of others. Gone is the powerlessness to break a pattern of sin. And gone is the self-defeating attitude declaring, I can’t help it!

Kaputt is Satan’s grip!

I know that can be hard to believe when sin and self-inflicted disorder in our lives continue after decades of being a Christian. But we are encouraged to be gentle with ourselves while not giving up intentionally growing in Christ.

You see, there is a vast difference between continuing to sin and continuing to live in sin. Living in sin is when sin controls a person, and one is defenseless as temptation strikes. But when we are born again through faith in Jesus Christ, we are instantaneously brought into a saving relationship with God by the power of the Holy Spirit. Change in our status before God occurs immediately.

But then, the hard work begins!

The slow, up and down, forward and backward, often frustrating process of growing in faith and faithfulness continues until death do us part from this world.

But we can be assured, from now (whatever your age), until we are taken out of this world and into the presence of Christ, we are in a fight that we will win! (see Philippians 1:6; Romans 6:4-11; 1 Peter 1:3-9) The victory we are already celebrating in Christ – having been raised with him through our baptism – holds onto us when we are feeling weak and when we are failing.

There is also this: Behold! The new has come!

What is new? New may be your faith. But for sure, new is the daily remembering of our identity as God’s loved and forgiven child. And remembering who we are as God’s grace-rich Christians is essential; for it is when we forget or ignore the truth of this Gospel message that we slip back into old ways.

Scripture is clear: Our old self is Kaputt. It has been nailed to the cross! But new is what cousin Becky calls funktioniert. It is what is working for us. It is the Spirit of Christ working with and within us to bring about change – change in how we see ourselves as renewed to live for Jesus.

Special Voters' Meeting

The Leadership Council will call a Special Voters’ Meeting immediately following service on Sunday, February 16, 2025, to request the congregation’s approval to use bequest funds to provide financial assistance to our neighbor on Glen Elm Drive whose home was destroyed in a natural gas explosion on January 3, 2025. Recent reports indicate Kirkwood and Glendale Fire Chief Jim Silvernail determined the blast and resulting fire left the home "uninhabitable." Additionally, we will be providing our quarterly update on the congregation’s finances. We look forward to seeing everyone!

Choir Rehearsals

Come join the choir as we begin preparation for the Lenten and Easter seasons. Tuesday evenings at 7:00 we rehearse in the sanctuary. See you then!

Baseball Darts

You are invited to play Baseball Darts on the following dates at 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Room:

Hymn of Invocation – Holy God, We Praise Thy Name (LSB 940)

Holy God, we praise Thy name;

Lord of all, we bow before Thee.

All on earth Thy scepter claim,

All in heav’n above adore Thee.

Infinite Thy vast domain,

Everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark! The glad celestial hymn

Angel choirs above are raising;

Cherubim and seraphim,

In unceasing chorus praising,

Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:

Holy, holy, holy Lord!

Lo, the_apostles’ holy train

Join Thy sacred name to hallow;

Prophets swell the glad refrain,

And the white-robed martyrs follow,

And from morn to set of sun

Through the Church the song goes on.

Thou art King of Glory, Christ;

Son of God, yet born of Mary.

For us sinners sacrificed,

As to death a Tributary,

First to break the bars of death,

Thou hast opened heav’n to faith.

Holy Father, holy Son,

Holy Spirit, three we name Thee;

Though in essence only one,

Undivided God we claim Thee

And, adoring, bend the knee

While we own the mystery.

From Thy high celestial home,

Judge of all, again returning,

We believe that Thou shalt come

On that final judgment morning,

When Thy voice shall shake the earth

And the startled dead come forth.

Spare Thy people, Lord, we pray,

By a thousand snares surrounded;

Keep us without sin today,

Never let us be confounded.

Lo, I put my trust in Thee;

Never, Lord, abandon me.

+ Preparation +

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Introit

P: O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me!

C: My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.

P: With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone.

C: O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.

P: So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: O God, be not far from me; O my God, make haste to help me!

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Gloria in Excelsis

To God on high be glory

And peace to all the earth;

Goodwill from God in heaven

Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!

We praise and bless You, Father;

Your holy name we sing—

Our thanks for Your great glory,

Lord God, our heav'nly King.

To You, O sole-begotten,

The Father's Son, we pray;

O Lamb of God, our Savior,

You take our sins away.

Have mercy on us, Jesus;

Receive our heartfelt cry,

Where You in pow'r are seated

At God's right hand on high—

For You alone are holy,

You only are the Lord.

Forever and forever,

Be worshiped and adored;

You with the Holy Spirit

Alone are Lord Most High,

In God the Father's glory.

"Amen!" our glad reply.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingIsaiah 6:1–8

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”

And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle1 Corinthians 14:12–20

So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.

Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

These things are written

that you may believe that

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy GospelMark 4:21-29

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want (LSB 710)

The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want;

He makes me down to lie

In pastures green; He leadeth me

The quiet waters by.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,

Yet will I fear no ill;

For Thou art with me, and Thy rod

And staff me comfort still.

Goodness and mercy all my life

Shall surely follow me;

And in God’s house forevermore

My dwelling place shall be.

Children’s Message – Janet Leet

Hymn of the Day – “Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery"

Come, behold the wondrous mystery

In the dawning of the king

He the theme of Heaven's praises

Robed in frail humanity

In our longing, in our darkness

Now, the light of life has come

Look to Christ who condescended

Took on flesh to ransom us

Come, behold the wondrous mystery

He is the perfect son of man

In His living, in His suffering

Never trace nor stain of sin

See the true and better Adam

Come to save the hell-bound man

Christ, the great and sure fulfilment

Of the law in Him, we stand

Come, behold the wondrous mystery

Christ, the Lord upon the tree

In the stead of ruined sinners

Hangs the lamb in victory

See the price of our redemption

See the Father's plan unfold

Bringing many sons to glory

Grace unmeasured, love untold

Come, behold the wondrous mystery

Slain by death, the God of life

But no grave could ever restrain Him

Praise the Lord, He is alive

What a foretaste of deliverance

How unwavering our hope

Christ in power resurrected

As we will be when He comes

What a foretaste of deliverance

How unwavering our hope

Christ in power resurrected

As we will be when He comes

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord

God of Sabaoth adored;

Heav'n and earth with full acclaim

shout the glory of Your name.

Sing hosanna in the highest,

sing hosanna to the Lord;

Truly blest is He who comes

in the name of the Lord!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ,

And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – O Living Bread from Heaven (LSB 642)

O living Bread from heaven,

How well You feed your guest!

The gifts that You have given

Have filled my heart with rest.

Oh, wondrous food of blessing,

Oh, cup that heals our woes!

My heart, this gift possessing,

With praises overflows.

My Lord, You here have led me

To this most holy place

And with Yourself have fed me

The treasures of Your grace;

For You have freely given

What earth could never buy,

The bread of life from heaven,

That now I shall not die.

You gave me all I wanted;

This food can death destroy.

And You have freely granted

The cup of endless joy.

My Lord, I do not merit

The favor You have shown,

And all my soul and spirit

Bow down before Your throne.

Lord, grant me then, thus strengthened

With heav’nly food, while here

My course on earth is lengthened,

To serve with holy fear.

And when You call my spirit

To leave this world below,

I enter, through Your merit,

Where joys unmingled flow.

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

O Lord, now let Your servant

Depart in heav'nly peace,

For I have seen the glory

Of Your redeeming grace:

A light to lead the Gentiles

Unto Your holy hill,

The glory of Your people,

Your chosen Israel.

All glory to the Father,

All glory to the Son,

All glory to the Spirit,

Forever Three in One;

For as in the beginning,

Is now, shall ever be,

God's triune name resounding

Through all eternity.

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benedicamus and Benediction

P: Let us bless the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – I Love to Tell the Story (AGPS 128)

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,

Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true;

It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do. Refrain

Refrain: I love to tell the story; ‘twill be my theme in glory

To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, ‘tis pleasant to repeat

What seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.

I love to tell the story, for some have never heard

The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. Refrain

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best

Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,

‘Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain
