Invocation
P:+In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:+Amen.
Opening Sentences
P:+Christ being raised from the dead will never die again;
C:+death no longer has dominion over Him. Alleluia.

P:+Christ has risen from the dead. Alleluia!
C:+God the Father has crowned Him with glory and honor,

P:+He has give Him dominion over the works of His hands;
C:+He has put all things under His feet. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Confession and Absolution
P:+Let us confess our sin to God, our merciful Father.

C:+Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our creator and preserver, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We are stained by sin from our very beginnings. We have sinned again and again in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves and have turned away from one another in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil Your forbid and have not done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for all of our many sins. Have mercy on us, gracious Father; forgive us all that is past, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, direct our lives so that we serve You in true faithfulness. Grant us victory over all that oppresses us, and build Your kingdom among us here through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
P:+In His boundless mercy, God has promised forgiveness of sins to those who repent and turn to Him for restoration and renewal. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit, and grant you a life on earth in which you tell of His greatness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C:+Amen.
+ Word +
Salutation and Collect of the Day

C:+And also with you.
P:+Let us pray. O God, through the humiliation of Your Son You raised up from the fallen world. Grant to Your faithful people, rescued from the peril of everlasting death, perpetual gladness and eternal joys; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:+Amen.
First Reading – Acts 2:29-47
+“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
+Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
+And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Epistle – 1 Peter 1:17-25
+And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
+And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel – Luke 24:13-35
P:+The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.
C:+Glory to You, O Lord.

+That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
+So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

P:+This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:+Praise to You, O Christ.
Children’s Song – I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb (LSB 740, v. 1-2)

I am Jesus’ little lamb,
Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me,
Knows my need and well provides me,
Loves me ev’ry day the same,
Even calls me by my name.

Day by day, at home, away,
Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me,
Into pleasant pastures leads me;
When I thirst, He bids me go
Where the quiet waters flow.
Children’s Message
Hymn of the Day – Holy Spirit, Light Divine (LSB 496)

Holy Spirit, light divine,
Shine upon this heart of mine;
Chase the shades of night away,
Turn the darkness into day.

Let me see my Savior’s face,
Let me all His beauties trace;
Show those glorious truths to me
Which are only known to Thee.

Holy Spirit, pow’r divine,
Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;
In Thy mercy pity me,
From sin’s bondage set me free.

Holy Spirit, joy divine,
Cheer this saddened heart of mine;
Yield a sacred, settled peace,
Let it grow and still increase.

Holy Spirit, all divine,
Dwell within this heart of mine;
Cast down ev’ry idol throne,
Reign supreme and reign alone.
Sermon
Apostles' Creed
C:+I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
+And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
+ I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface
P:+The Lord be with you.
C:+And also with you.
P:+Lift up your hearts.
C:+We lift them to the Lord.
P:+Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:+It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P:+It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, for in Christ You have given us the victory over sin, death, and the power of the devil. Pour out upon us the gift of Your Spirit, that we receive Your blessings with true thanksgiving. Grant that we receive the body and blood of our Lord as a guarantee of our salvation and as a foretaste of the feast to come in Your eternal kingdom. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise, together with the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C:+Amen.
The Words of Our Lord
P:+Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Proclamation of Christ
P:+As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C:+Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P:+O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
Lord’s Prayer
C:+Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pax Domini
P:+The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:+Amen.

Closing Hymn – I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus (LSB 729)

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,
Trusting only Thee;
Trusting Thee for full salvation,
Great and free.

I am trusting Thee for pardon;
At Thy feet I bow,
For Thy grace and tender mercy
Trusting now.

I am trusting Thee for cleansing
In the crimson flood;
Trusting Thee to make me holy
By Thy blood.

I am trusting Thee to guide me;
Thou alone shalt lead,
Ev’ry day and hour supplying
All my need.

I am trusting Thee for power;
Thine can never fail.
Words which Thou Thyself shalt give me
Must prevail.

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus;
Never let me fall.
I am trusting Thee forever
And for all.

Weekly Newsletter

Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
April 23, 2020
Over the next several weeks I’m teaching the congregation how to grow closer as a family. These 5 simple steps are SHARE highs and lows, READ a Bible verse together, TALK about the passage, PRAY with each other, and BLESS one another. On Sunday we explore SHARE in the second chapter of Acts.

When we SHARE highs and lows it models healthy communication, engenders caring, fosters acceptance and teaches appreciation. When you share your daily high with a family member it multiplies joy. Joy is meant to be shared. Carol Froesel shared with me this week that her daughter and son in law sold their house. I experienced her joy and it filled me up also. Imagine a church that shares joys, laughter like this every week. Imagine a household that shares it every day.

Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice.” It is healthy to praise God daily for the good things he has given to you. Coronavirus has taught us that we’ve taken a lot of simple gifts for granted. Handshakes, hugs, walks in the park, trips to the store qualify now as a high. The high you share with your family doesn’t have to be momentous, it just has to be something for which you are thankful.

If you only know someone’s highs then you don’t really know them. We all have low moments in the day, times when we are frustrated, tired, angry, and disappointed. Sharing a low first makes us stop and honestly reflect on our experiences. Then we trust our spouse, our children or our friend to listen to that experience. Galatians 6: 2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Jesus shared his pain and loss with the disciples. How much more do we need to get them off our chest? When we share our fears and worries daily with our household our chest will actually feel better because our blood pressure will go down and our heart will feel light. Try it this week, SHARE your highs and lows around the dinner table or before you go to bed.

New Tax Benefits for Charitable Giving Included in the CARES Act
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that was signed into law on March 27, 2020, contains the following two provisions that may impact your giving to Glendale Lutheran Church and charities during 2020:

Standard Deduction - For those taxpayers who utilize the standard deduction on his/her 2020 income tax return, a new above-the-line deduction allows an individual to deduct up to $300 of cash contributions to qualified charities, including Glendale Lutheran Church. A married couple is allowed to deduct up to $600. This new deduction does not apply to taxpayers who itemize deductions.

What is exciting about this new deduction is the ability to take the standard deduction and still deduct charitable contributions up to the $300 limit per taxpayer. Normally, charitable deductions are only allowed for those who itemize deductions. Since most individuals take the standard deduction, this new deduction is now available to the vast majority of taxpayers.

Itemized Deductions - For those taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2020 income tax returns, charitable contributions of cash are now deductible up to 100% of 2020 Adjusted Gross Income. Normally, these cash charitable contributions are limited to 60% of Adjusted Gross Income. Please note that this new limit does not apply to gifts of appreciated securities.

Caveat: The deductions for cash contributions mentioned above must be made to public charities and cannot be made to a donor advised fund or private foundation.

Please contact your tax professional to determine how these provisions impact you.
