Pastor Biermann's Message Sunday is the day of Confirmation. For three young members of Glendale, this is a day that they will stand before all of you and confirm the faith given in the Sacrament of Baptism when they were infants. The rite of Confirmation does not give grace, or put one into a different relationship with God or even with the church. Confirmation certainly does not complete or fulfill baptism or any other promise of God. Confirmation does not extend any peculiar blessing or promise of God's gifts. God gives his gifts as he always does through preaching, absolution, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper. The point of Confirmation, is rather narrow: it's the chance for a person publicly and deliberately to make known the work of God in that person's life. It's an opportunity to declare the reality of faith, and the make a vow of life-long fidelity to that faith. In other words, confirmation is something that a person does in response to what God has done. Christian people are continually confirming the faith that they have and cherish. They confirm it in their words, and their actions-in their determined choices to follow the way of Christ and to speak his truth to those around them. So, Confirmation is neither an end nor a beginning; it's simply a singular day to sharpen and focus the reality of God's giving and the Christian's faithful response to that giving. Spencer, Anna, and Krista will be confirming their faith before many family members but also before all of you. This is quite appropriate since along with their immediate families, you are the ones who are responsible for these three young disciples. In the body of Christ, we are all mutually interdependent and mutually responsible for each other's Christian walk. When Glendale's three confirmands make their daring vow to follow Christ faithfully until death, they put you, their fellow followers of Christ, under obligation. You are obligated, now, to help them keep this vow in all the years ahead. Be sure to be in worship this Sunday. The festivities and decorations may prompt some potent memories, and may also help reignite the import of the vows you once made. Even more significantly, for the sake of Sunday's confirmands you need to be present to given them the support of your prayers, encouragement, and affirmation as you promise to help them keep their promise.
