Hymn of Invocation – Jesus Christ is Risen Today, LSB 457

Jesus Christ is ris’n today, Alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heav’nly king, Alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which He endured, Alleluia!
Our salvation have procured; Alleluia!
Now above the sky He’s king, Alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
Praise eternal as His love; Alleluia!
Praise Him, all ye heav’nly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!
+ Preparation +
Invocation
P:+In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:+Amen.
Opening Sentences
P:+This is the day that the LORD has made;
C:+Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

P:+Christ has risen from the dead. Alleluia!
C:+God the Father has crowned Him with glory and honor,

P:+He has given Him dominion over the works of His hands;
C:+He has put all things under His feet. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Confession and Absolution
P:+Let us come before God in true repentance, seeking His mercy and forgiveness. O God our Father, we admit and confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against you in thought and in word and in deed.
C:+Have mercy on us and forgive us, O Lord.
P:+We confess that we have not lived as Your followers but have sought to go our own ways in directions that have not brought glory to You or blessing to others.
C:+Have mercy on us and forgive us, O Lord.
P:+We confess that Your love has not reached others through us in every situation, that there have been times in which we have been loveless, thoughtless, and judgmental toward others, unwilling to help our neighbor as we ought.
C:+Have mercy on us and forgive us, Lord.
P:+We confess that Your will has not been our priority at all times and that we have not always been defenders of the weak and helpless in our circle of family, neighbors, and friends and beyond.
C:+Have mercy on us and forgive us, Lord.
P:+We confess that we have not used every opportunity given to us to witness to the resurrection faith that is ours and have at times been slow to speak of the hope that is ours in Christ.
C:+Have mercy on us and forgive us, Lord.
P:+Upon this your confession an by the command of our Lord, I, a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:+Amen.
P:+Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it. Go in + peace.
C:+Amen.
+ Word +
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P:+The Lord be with you.
C:+And also with you.
P:+Let us pray. Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, You destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light. C:+Amen.
First Reading – Acts 10:34–43
+So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Old Testament Reading – Jeremiah 31:1-6
+“At that time, declares the Lord, I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.”
+Thus says the Lord: “The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant and shall enjoy the fruit. For there shall be a day when watchmen will call in the hill country of Ephraim: ‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.’”

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Epistle – Colossians 3:1-4
+If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel – Luke 24:13-35
P:+The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.
C:+Glory to You, O Lord.

+That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
+So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

P:+This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:+Praise to You, O Christ.
Children’s Song – Lord of the Dance, AGPS 170, v. 1, 5

I danced in the morning when he world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth.
At Bethlehem I had my birth. Refrain

Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He.
And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the dance, said He.

They cut me down and I leapt up high,
I am the life that’ll never, never die;
I’ll live in you if you’ll live in Me;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He. Refrain
Children’s Message
Hymn of the Day – Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds, LSB 465

Now all the vault of heav’nly resounds
In praise of love that still abounds:
“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear!
Repeat their song of glory here:
“Christ has triumphed! Christ has triumphed!”
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Eternal is the gift He brings,
Therefore our heart with rapture sings:
“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
Now still He comes to give us life
And by His presence stills all strife.
“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O fill us, Lord, with dauntless love;
Set heart and will on things above
That we conquer through Your triumph;
Grant grace sufficient for life’s day
That by our lives we truly say:
“Christ has triumphed! He is living!”
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Adoring praises now we bring
And with the heav’nly blessed sing:
“Christ has triumphed! Alleluia!”
Be to the Father and our Lord,
To Spirit blest, most holy God,
All the glory, never ending!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Sermon - The Road to Emmaus
Apostles' Creed
C:+I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
+And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
+ I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offertory - My Life Flows On in Endless Song

(lyrics provided for reflection)

My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth's lamentation
I catch the sweet though far off hymn
That hails a new creation: (Refrain)

Refrain:
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth--
How can I keep from singing?

Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds and echo in my soul,
How can I keep from singing? (Refrain)

What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth;
What though the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night He giveth: (Refrain)

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his.
How can I keep from singing? (Refrain)

Preface
P:+The Lord be with you.
C:+And also with you.
P:+Lift up your hearts.
C:+We lift them to the Lord.
P:+Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:+It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P:+It is truly good, right, and proper that we should give thanks to You, our gracious Heavenly Father, for in Your goodness You have given Your only-begotten Son for our salvation. By the guiding of Your Spirit direct our ways that we be filled with His presence. Kindle in us the fire of Your love and grant that we ever make the good confession of our faith. Grant that we receive the body and blood of our Lord as a guarantee of our salvation and as a foretaste of the feast to come in Your eternal kingdom. To You along, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise, together with the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C:+Amen.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
P:+With joyful praise, Lord God, we bless You this day for having sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to be a perfect sacrifice so that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name. Grant that our lives know the peace that surpasses all understanding. Invited by Your grace, grant that we come to Your Table with grateful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, that we live with confidence, securely awaiting the eternal feast with all the saints in glory.
C:+Amen.
The Words of Our Lord
P:+Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Proclamation of Christ
P:+As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C:+Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P:+O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
Lord’s Prayer
C:+Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pax Domini
P:+The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:+Amen.
Distribution
Blessing
Post-Communion Thanksgiving
P:+Let us pray. O Lord God, Heavenly Father, Ruler of all things, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come through this blessed Meal. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having now received this wondrous Sacrament, we die daily through Baptism and rise new and restored as we joyfully continue our earthly pilgrimage until that time when we are gathered into Your heavenly kingdom to share in Your glory for all eternity. This we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
C:+Amen.
Benediction
P:+The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C:+Amen.
Closing Hymn – Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven, LSB 477

Alleluia, alleluia!
Hearts to heav’n and voices raise:
Sing to God a hun of gladness,
Sing to God a hymn of praise.
He who on the cross a victim
For the world’s salvation bled—
Jesus Christ, the King of Glory,
Now is risen from the dead.

Alleluia, Christ is risen!
Death at last has met defeat:
See the ancient pow’rs of evil
In confusion and retreat;
Once He died, and once was buried:
Now He lives forevermore,
Jesus Christ, the world’s Redeemer,
Whom we worship and adore.

Alleluia, alleluia!
Glory be to God on high:
Alleluia to the Savior
Who has gained the victory;
Alleluia to the Spirit,
Fount of love and sanctity!
Alleluia, alleluia
To the triune Majesty!

Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
April 10, 2020
Things I focused last Sunday on lament. Jesus in Luke 19 laments the demise of Jerusalem, God’s city. Their sin is leading to his death and their destruction at the hands of the Romans. Jesus shows us how to give our sorrow and anger to god so that we can get through this season. This will be a very different Holy Week than we are used to so I thought I would create a list.

Things that will be different and may require lament…
  1. We will not be in the sanctuary together.
  2. Most will not receive the Lord’s Supper.
  3. We can’t celebrate Easter by going out to restaurant.
  4. Some families can’t be together.

Things that don’t change and may require thanksgiving...
  1. Jesus still died and rose from the dead.
  2. We are his church and the Gates of Hell shall not overcome it.
  3. The Holy Spirit still binds us through word and sacrament.
  4. Christ’s true body and blood is still strengthening and sustaining you.
  5. We are steadfast in Christ.

Throughout history there have been times of Diaspora, when God’s people are dispersed. This happens in Acts chapter 2 when thousands of believers went back to their country of origin.  Diaspora actually allows the Gospel to spread. God will use our separation to spread the Gospel in our homes. This will bring a boom to the church and it’s exactly what we need. Starting after Easter, we will go through the book of Acts, Luke’s sequel. Our emphasis will be Faith at home. I will preach and we will study how to share the good news with our household every day. It’s going to be great.
