How Much Are You Worth? - by Joel Hempel

Our financial adviser tells us in his monthly report that our financial worth is not what it once was. When I look in the mirror or attempt to lift the weight I once lifted with ease, I quickly conclude I’m not as strong, good-looking, or fit as I used to be. As I write these words, I am reminded that my brain does not work as quickly as it once did.

I know our country is founded on the principle that all people are created equal, with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But we are also surrounded by Hollywood’s influence, social media, advertisements, and marketing. Given what we see in the movies, on TV, and on the internet, I have two questions for you:

First, what would you say are the cultural values that surround us – and I daresay influence all of us? Here’s my list: Youthfulness, good looks, intelligence, cognition, financial security, the ability to connect with others, freedom, health, education, the importance of time, family, power and influence, success, hard work, self-determination, physical fitness, autonomy, individuality, accumulation of stuff, and other characteristics you could add (or subtract).

I’m not suggesting that such “valuables” are all bad. But here’s my second question: What are we tempted to think about ourselves as we begin losing, or may never have had, what is widely believed to constitute human worth?

It is no wonder that the “You Are Enough” yard signs took hold around the country. If people don’t have “enough” of society’s values in their lives, it is hard to feel and believe they are enough.

The message of Genesis 1:27 needs to reign supreme in our convictions: God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them (NRSV). God then breathed his breath into us (Genesis 2:7).

There is something of God in all human beings. I’m not smart enough to say what that is. But I do know this. It is the image of God within us that makes us valuable. Humans are, we are, YOU ARE God’s created child - and furthermore, we are redeemed by Jesus (John 3:16), which adds enormous, immeasurable value to our personhood.

When Marcia and I used to work at Laclede Groves Retirement Community, some of our time was spent in the nursing home. We soon learned it did not matter how wealthy you were when you entered the nursing home. If you lived long enough, you ended up with virtually none of what society says contributes to your worth. One by one, the cultural values I listed above are peeled away. But what is left is what was always there in its full, spiritual glory.

Neither our culture’s values nor your mirror can tell you what you are worth. For that assessment, look to God’s grace, his forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit who lives within you. Don’t believe me? Ask God: Psalm 92:12-14; Isaiah 49:15-16; Jeremiah 29:11; Matthew 10:29-31; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 6:19; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:4-10; 1 John 3:1-2.

Christmas - by Seth Carruthers

Christmastime is a great season to stop and explore all of the creativity around us, from beautiful light displays to classic movies. It is a great time for sure! The same is true within our rich history of carols and poetry. As we continue our journey through Advent, I invite you to take a moment to reflect on the words of William Cullen Bryant.

Christmas

As shadows cast by cloud and sun

   Flit o'er the summer grass,

So, in Thy sight, Almighty One,

   Earth's generations pass.

And as the years, an endless host,

Come swiftly pressing on,

The brightest names that earth can boast

   Just glisten and are gone.

Yet doth the star of Bethlehem shed

   A lustre pure and sweet:

And still it leads, as once it led,

   To the Messiah's feet.

O Father, may that holy star

   Grow ever year more bright,

And send its glorious beams afar

   To fill the world with light.

Trunk or Treat

Although our congregation’s Trunk or Treat event was several weeks ago, we nevertheless wanted to report to you on how successful it was. Through Ally Philpot’s and several congregation members’ hard work, 20 bags of candy were donated and we were able to have five tables handing out treats and three tables with games. We also had five standalone games including bowling, mystery cauldrons, a ring toss, a bean bag toss, and hit the Goliath. We were able to serve 15 kids and everyone had a blast! Thanks to Ally for spearheading this event and for all the volunteers who made it such a hit.

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit

C: Amen.

Opening SentencesPsalm 40:1-3

P: I waited patiently for the LORD;

C: He inclined to me and heard my cry.

P: He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog,

C: and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

P: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

C: Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

Confession and Absolution1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

P: That we may rejoice in the great things our forgiving God does for us, let us together confess our sins before Him.

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we do and by what we fail to do. Instead of looking to Jesus and following Him in faith, we have gone astray by disobeying Your Word. Instead of giving bold witness to You, we have kept silent and withheld Your grace from others. For the sake of our Savior and King, have mercy on us. Forgive us and restore us. Guide us and renew us. Help us to walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.” Our God hears our prayers and answers them, removing our sins and declaring us blameless in His sight through faith in Jesus Christ. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

+ Word +

Introit

P: Show us Your steadfast love, O LORD,

C: and grant us Your salvation.

P: Let me hear what God the LORD will speak,

C: for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly.

P: Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him,

C: that glory may dwell in our land.

P: Yes, the LORD will give what is good,

C: and our land will yield its increase.

P: Righteousness will go before Him

C: and make His footsteps a way.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Show us Your steadfast love, O LORD,

C: and grant us Your salvation.

Salutation

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

P: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, we implore You to hear our prayers.

C: Embolden our witness to the true light that overcomes our darkness;

P: for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingIsaiah 61:1–4, 8–11

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their offspring shall be known among the nations, and their descendants in the midst of the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them, that they are an offspring the LORD has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 12:1–10

I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel John 1:6–8, 19–28

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the first chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light….

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

OffertoryJoy Has Dawned

(lyrics provided for reflection)

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Joy has dawned upon the world, promised from creation;

God’s salvation now unfurled, hope for ev’ry nation.

Not with fanfare from above, not with scenes of glory,

But a humble gift of love: Jesus born of Mary.

Sounds of wonder fill the sky with the songs of angels

As the mighty Prince of Life shelters in a stable.

Hands that set each star in place, shaped the earth in darkness,

Cling now to a mother’s breast, vuln’rable and helpless.

Come to Bethlehem, and see Him whose birth the angels sing;

Come adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn king.

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds bow before the Lamb, gazing at the glory;

Gifts of men from distant lands prophesy the story.

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose way John the Baptist prepared, proclaiming Him the promised Messiah, the very Lamb of God who takes away our sin, giving witness to the light of the world, whose coming scatters the darkness of death. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and have given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

C: In Your boundless mercy You sent Your faithful witness, John the Baptist, to prepare the way for Jesus and His coming kingdom.

P: With thankful hearts we pray, “Come, Lord Jesus,” confident that in His body and blood, given us to eat and drink, we receive the forgiveness of sins and so proclaim His death until He comes again in glory. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”  In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution Hymn – Beautiful Savior (LSB 537)

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,

Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,

Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,

He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,

Bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer

Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, praise, adoration

Now and forevermore be Thine!

Closing Hymn – I Love to Tell the Story (AGPS 128)

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,

Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true;

It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do. Refrain

Refrain: I love to tell the story; ‘twill be my theme in glory

To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

I love to tell the story, ‘tis pleasant to repeat

What seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet.

I love to tell the story, for some have never heard

The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word. Refrain

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best

Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,

‘Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Opening Sentences

P: The Spirit and the Church cry out:

C: Come, Lord Jesus.

P: All those who await His appearance pray:

C: Come, Lord Jesus.

P: The whole creation pleads:

C: Come, Lord Jesus.

Opening Hymn – Comfort, Comfort Ye My People (LSB 347)

“Comfort, comfort ye My people,

Speak ye peace,” thus saith our God;

“Comfort those who sit in darkness,

Mourning ’neath their sorrows’ load.

Speak ye to Jerusalem

Of the peace that waits for them;

Tell her that her sins I cover

And her warfare now is over.”

Yea, her sins our God will pardon,

Blotting out each dark misdeed;

All that well deserved His anger

He no more will see or heed.

She hath suffered many_a day,

Now her griefs have passed away;

God will change her pining sadness

Into ever-springing gladness.

Hark, the herald’s voice is crying

In the desert far and near,

Calling sinners to repentance,

Since the Kingdom now is here.

O that warning cry obey!

Now prepare for God a way;

Let the valleys rise to meet Him

And the hills bow down to greet Him.

Make ye straight what long was crooked;

Make the rougher places plain.

Let your hearts be true and humble,

As befits His holy reign.

For the glory of the Lord

Now o’er earth is shed abroad,

And all flesh shall see the token

That His Word is never broken.

Thanksgiving for Light

P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of the universe, who led Your people Israel by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Enlighten our darkness by the light of Your Christ; may His Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for You are merciful, and You love Your whole creation and we, Your creatures, glorify You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Psalm

C: You once revived us, Lord our God, and we rejoiced in You. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, we pray; in Christ Your love we view.

P: LORD, You were favorable to Your land; You restored the fortunes of Jacob. You forgave the iniquity of Your people; You covered all their sin.

C: You once revived us, Lord our God, and we rejoiced in You. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, we pray; in Christ Your love we view.

P: You withdrew all Your wrath; You turned from Your hot anger. Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away Your indignation toward us!

Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations? Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?

C: You once revived us, Lord our God, and we rejoiced in You. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, we pray; in Christ Your love we view.

P: Show us Your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us Your salvation. Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land.

C: You once revived us, Lord our God, and we rejoiced in You. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, we pray; in Christ Your love we view.

P: Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before Him and make His footsteps a way.

C: You once revived us, Lord our God, and we rejoiced in You. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, we pray; in Christ Your love we view.

First Reading - Nehemiah 4:1–23

Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews. And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of Samaria, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?” Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Yes, what they are building—if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!” Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders. So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.

In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.” And our enemies said, “They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.” At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.” So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”

When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work. From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me. And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another. In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”

So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out. I also said to the people at that time, “Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day.” So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon at his right hand.

Second Reading - 2 Corinthians 10:1-18

I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!—I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

Look at what is before your eyes. If anyone is confident that he is Christ’s, let him remind himself that just as he is Christ’s, so also are we. For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.” Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

But we will not boast beyond limits, but will boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you. For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. We were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be greatly enlarged, so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another’s area of influence. “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

Hymn – Lord of All Hopefulness (LSB 738)

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:

Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,

Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:

Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,

Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace:

Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,

Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:

Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,

Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Sermon

Prayers

P: Let us pray. O Lord, who in the past revived Your people, showing them steadfast love, hear us as we pray for ourselves and all the Church: Strengthen our hope and increase faith and love among us and toward the world. Use us as fits Your gracious plans for them.

C: Hear our prayer, O Lord. Revive us again and stir up our hearts to serve You.

P: Show us Your steadfast love now, O Lord. Hear us as we pray for all who have been forgotten by the world’s commerce: Surround with faith-filled people all who are hungry and homeless, the many who are migrants and refugees, people dealing with sudden ills and long-term disabilities, and all who are in mourning. Use us as fits Your gracious plans for them.

C: Hear our prayer, O Lord. Revive us again and stir up our hearts to serve You.

P: Give us, O Lord, what we need as we struggle in this dark world: Renew in us true faith and peace, faithfulness in worship, a spiritual vitality, and a confidence in Your promise of eternal life. Grant that many join us in fruitful worship. Use us as fits Your gracious plans for them.

C: Hear our prayer, O Lord. Revive us again and stir up our hearts to serve You.

P: By the blessed coming of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who gave us His own righteousness, grant these our prayers, for we pray in His name.

C: Amen.

Collect for Today

P: Revive us again, Lord our God,

C: and give us Christ’s own righteousness so that we may serve You and love the people around us as living stones of Your temple;

P: through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Collect from Sunday

P: Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of Your only-begotten Son,

C: that by His coming we may be enabled to serve You with pure minds;

P: through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Luther’s Evening Prayer

I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let your holy angels be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Prepare the Royal Highway (LSB 343)

Prepare the royal highway;

The King of kings is near!

Let ev’ry hill and valley

A level road appear!

Then greet the King of Glory

Foretold in sacred story:  Refrain

Refrain: Hosanna to the Lord,

   For He fulfills God’s Word!

God’s people, see Him coming:

Your own eternal king!

Palm branches strew before Him!

Spread garments! Shout and sing!

God’s promise will not fail you!

No more shall doubt assail you!  Refrain

Then fling the gates wide open

To greet your promised king!

Your king, yet ev’ry nation

Its tribute too should bring.

All lands, bow down before Him!

All nations, now adore Him!  Refrain

His is no earthly kingdom;

It comes from heav’n above.

His rule is peace and freedom

And justice, truth, and love.

So let your praise be sounding

For kindness so abounding:  Refrain
