Qualified Charitable Distributions from Your IRA

Many retirees notice that Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from IRAs have negative consequences that include:

  • pushing them into a higher tax bracket
  • increasing the amount of their Social Security benefits that are taxable and/or
  • causing them to have to pay increased Medicare premiums, known as Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAA).

If you are required to take an RMD from an IRA, did you know that you can eliminate or reduce these negative consequences by instructing your IRA custodian to transfer all or a portion of your RMD directly to a qualified charity, such as Glendale Lutheran Church? This is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution and it counts toward satisfying your RMD for the year, up to $100,000. More importantly, the amount of a QCD is excluded from your taxable income. That's worth repeating. The amount of a QCD is not counted in your taxable income for that year.

Important: This tax benefit is not available to you if you take possession of your RMD, even if you give the amount of your RMD to charity that same year. If you take possession of your RMD, it is considered a taxable event, even if you give it away. If you wish to take advantage of a QCD, please contact your IRA custodian.

Mortgage Update

We continue to publish our current mortgage activity on the kiosk but it is worth noting that in less than 5 years we have reduced our $900,000 indebtedness by $378,000 for a current balance of $521,602. This significant reduction in principal liability has been accomplished thanks to a steady stream of member specified gifts and most recently a $50,000 gift specified for principal reduction. These payments over and above our regular monthly principal and interest payment of $5,750 have saved us hundreds of thousands in interest expense and at the same time reduced the length of time of our mortgage obligation by many many months. We are currently still “enjoying” a mortgage interest of 4.75%. This means that almost 65% of our monthly payment goes directly to reduction of principal.

We acknowledge, with thankfulness, those who week by week keep chipping away to reduce this debt.

God With Us - article by Joel Hempel

Most people reading this article can tell you that Emmanuel means “God with us.” Although for some of us, it helps to have an annual reminder.

What is God saying to us by having the name Emmanuel identified with his Son, Jesus? There are at least three ways of answering that question.

God

First, it is mindboggling to reflect on the fact that God, the Creator of the universe, the one who fixed in place the galaxies and their hundreds stars, the God who set life in motion on earth and for centuries has had scientists scrambling trying to figure out how it all happened, that same One-True-God wants to be with us, wants to be with you – his prize creation.

Scholar and theologian Eugene Peterson authored an interpretation of the New Testament called The Message. He translated the familiar John 1:14 passage, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.” Our God is far beyond us and is as near as next door.

With

If I am with you, I am not against you; I’m for you. If I am with you, I am on your side. If I am with you, I am in your presence. I’m nearby and available. If I am with you, I have your back. If I am with you, I am someone you can trust. I’m your friend, your ally, your confidant. God in Christ is all of this and so much more. Scripture puts it this way: God, the Holy Spirit, is our Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Comforter, and Teacher.

You can’t think about this too much. What are you facing in your life? Look who is on your side: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. What do you need? Call on him by name. He is at your side.

Us

God could be anywhere God wants to be. He could be in the heavens and beyond the stars. He could be in the crises around us, in the storms that threaten with their loud, howling wind, and in the still, small whisper of a hummingbird. God could have been in the past while waiting for us in the future. God is where God chooses to be. One thing we know for sure: He has chosen to be with us! With you! Why? God only knows the whole reason. But this much we know:

God loves us. He can’t keep his eyes off of us. It’s not that God is a helicopter god constantly hovering over us like a bothersome drone. He is not. It’s just that God is our Father, and we are his children.

He wants to be with us.

Prelude

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of Invocation – Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates (LSB 341, verses 1-3)

Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates!

Behold, the King of glory waits.

The King of kings is drawing near;

The Savior of the world is here.

Life and salvation He doth bring;

Therefore rejoice and gladly sing.

To God the Father raise

Your joyful songs of praise.

A righteous Helper comes to thee;

His chariot is humility,

His kingly crown is holiness,

His scepter, pity in distress.

The end of all our woe He brings;

Therefore the earth is glad and sings.

To Christ the Savior raise

Your grateful hymns of praise.

How blest the land, the city blest,

Where Christ the ruler is confessed!

O peaceful hearts and happy homes

To whom this King in triumph comes!

The cloudless sun of joy is He

Who comes to set His people free.

To God the Spirit raise

Your happy shouts of praise.

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P:  O God, our Father, You have set forth the way of life for us in Your beloved Son. We confess with shame our slowness to learn of Him, our failure to follow Him, and our reluctance to bear the cross.

C:  Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your steadfast love. We acknowledge our sinful nature and confess our sinful thoughts, words, and deed. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us.

P:  Upon this your confession and by the command of our Lord, I, a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

P:  Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it. Go in + peace.

C:  Amen.

Hymn – Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates (LSB 341, verses 4-5)

Fling wide the portals of your heart;

Make it a temple set apart

From earthly use for heav’n’s employ,

Adorned with prayer and love and joy.

So shall your Sov’reign enter in

And new and nobler life begin.

To God alone be praise

For word and deed and grace!

Redeemer, come and open wide

My heart to Thee; here, Lord, abide!

O enter with Thy grace divine;

Thy face of mercy on me shine.

Thy Holy Spirit guide us on

Until our glorious goal is won.

Eternal praise and fame

We offer to Thy name.

+ Word +

Introit

P:  Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.

C:  I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more.

P:  My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge.

All:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Let us pray. Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of Your only-begotten Son, that by His coming we may be enabled to serve You with pure minds; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

First ReadingIsaiah 35:1–10

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Hymn - Comfort, Comfort Ye My People (LSB 347, verse 1)

 “Comfort, comfort ye My people,

Speak ye peace,” thus saith our God;

“Comfort those who sit in darkness,

Mourning ’neath their sorrows’ load.

Speak ye to Jerusalem

Of the peace that waits for them;

Tell her that her sins I cover

And her warfare now is over.”

Holy GospelMatthew 11:2-15

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eleventh chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn - Comfort, Comfort Ye My People (LSB 347, verse 3)

Hark, the herald’s voice is crying

In the desert far and near,

Calling sinners to repentance,

Since the Kingdom now is here.

O that warning cry obey!

Now prepare for God a way;

Let the valleys rise to meet Him

And the hills bow down to greet Him.

Apostles' Creed

C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – God Loves Me Dearly (AGPS 109)

God loves me dearly, grants me salvation

God loves me dearly, loves even me.  Refrain

Refrain:  Therefore I’ll say again, God loves me dearly,

              God loves me dearly, loves even me.

He sent forth Jesus, my dear Redeemer,

He sent forth Jesus and set me free. Refrain

Children’s Message – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – Comfort, Comfort Ye My People (LSB 347, verse 4)

Make ye straight what long was crooked;

Make the rougher places plain.

Let your hearts be true and humble,

As befits His holy reign.

For the glory of the Lord

Now o’er earth is shed abroad,

And all flesh shall see the token

That His Word is never broken.

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

Grant us peace.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns (LSB 348)

The King shall come when morning dawns

And light triumphant breaks,

When beauty gilds the eastern hills

And life to joy awakes.

Not as of old a little child,

To bear and fight and die,

But crowned with glory like the sun

That lights the morning sky.

Oh, brighter than the rising morn

When Christ, victorious, rose

And left the lonesome place of death

Despite the rage of foes.

Oh, brighter than that glorious morn

Shall dawn upon our race

The day when Christ in splendor comes

And we shall see His face.

The King shall come when morning dawns

And light and beauty brings.

Hail, Christ the Lord! Your people pray:

Come quickly, King of kings!

Blessing

Benediction

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – Jesus Came, the Heavens Adoring (LSB 353, verses 1, 3)

Jesus came, the heav’ns adoring,

Came with peace from realms on high;

Jesus came to win redemption,

Lowly came on earth to die;

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Came in deep humility.

Jesus comes to hearts rejoicing,

Bringing news of sins forgiv’n;

Jesus comes with words of gladness,

Leading souls redeemed to heav’n.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Hope to all the world is giv’n.
